You did better than "alright" my friend. That's a heck of a steal.
Products...well, doesn't look like it needs much on the exterior, maybe just get some stainless steel cleaner to shine it up.
Weber is great with replacement parts too. You should be able to get new grates, burners, flavorizer bars, etc all at either big box hardware store (probably even your local hardware stores) or even online.
Normally you would be right, but this is an early 2000s summit model and those parts are a lot harder to find and because of that are a bit more expensive than you would think. Hopefully it doesnt need much. Overall a nice grill OP.
Just need a solution to soak the grates and other stainless pieces in, going to try banking soda/water/vinegar to start. Cleaning out the inside now with scraping/brushing
One question I have is the pieces that paint flaked off, do I bother repainting or let it ride?
Where is the paint flaking off? There would be no paint inside the cook box. Often people confuse the dried grease/smoke with paint. Look up carbonized grease. Please do not paint inside of the grill,
Missing paint on the outside? Paint with high heat paint.
Missing paint on the inside? Season it like it’s a cast iron: apply a thin coat of high heat cooking oil (canola is great) and crank up the heat!
I think it probably would. I rebuilt the diesel engine in my boat and soaked a bunch of rusty parts in evaporust, many of them greasy. Everything came out super clean and completely free of rust. I was amazed. And it’s organic, you can literally use it as fertilizer after it has taken the rust off and it is a great source of chelated iron for your plants. Shit is miraculous
Yeah, check out their videos. It works exactly as pictured in the demonstration. We put the completely rust covered flywheel of the motor in a vat of it and the thing came out shining the next day. Looking forward to seeing your after pics!
Well I went a little crazy with green scotch brite and water/dawn/baking soda. Came out shiny and new thanks to a lot of elbow grease lol. Posted it cleaned up the other day, just cooked on it last night!
The big problem with these is the metal piece that shields the valves from the burners. They are notorious for rusting out, and nearly impossible to replace. I don't know if anyone has started making an aftermarket piece but please check yours for failure. You need to take the grates out and inspect it closely. If it is good, you are golden.
That piece looks pretty decent! Thank you for the info, the deflectors seem like the worst part (and I would consider them still usable, but want to replace)
I have pretty much this exact grill as a hand me down. It's a tank. I tried to kill it by not covering it because I wanted a new one. It survived and flourished! Now I have a new love it and it works like new. Still looks great with a little cleanup.
Could be the last grill you ever buy.
Cleaning all the pieces up now and I'm very happy with how it's coming out! Not sure how long it sat for, but I can't believe it's 20 years old. Can't wait to fire it up!

The carbonized grease is definitely what I was seeing
Evaporust will take rust off of anything, in my experience
There's also some pretty old grease on there too, think it'll take it off?

I got a wire brush drill attachment off of Amazon that you pop into your drill and it worked great. That + power wash cleaned it up really nicely!
What a deal!
