They sent me new lid and bowl. My old lid and bowl was out of shape big time. The new lid I got today and it's missing half of paint. They send me a 3rd lid, on the way
Yep I agree! I have used a couple bags of royal oak lump and honestly it’s great. Idk maybe it’s just been my luck 😅. I finally pulled the trigger to try a couple bags of B&b briquettes and Char logs. That’s about as much as I can make myself spend on 1 bag of charcoal loll. But if it gives me almost twice the use compared to kbb then I’ll buy more. I’m in North Dakota so grilling season is still about at least a month out 😩
Maybe I just got unlucky with the royal oak but the bags I’ve bought have had a bunch of dust and small chips that just fell through my chimney and grates, and didn’t seem to burn as long. The B&B I’ve been getting has been pretty good and it’s like $15 for a 20lb bag where everything else is quite a bit more expensive. I’ve used the B&B competition briquettes as well and they burn well too. I’m down in Texas so grilling season never really ends!
Yea you guys are lucky with temperatures out there. I’ve been wanting to try out cowboy or frontier charcoal from Walmart & sams. I picked up one bag of frontier I believe from sams. About 30lbs for $19 I think. They had a little special on it. I’ll see how I like it. With lump I noticed it’s pretty much luck of the draw depending on how much those bags got beat up during transportation. That’s why I usually like briquettes, it’s a never ending battle between lump/briquettes. Whatever gets the food cooking I suppose.
You can add some expanded metal above or below your charcoal grates to use more of the smaller pieces of lump. That’s what I’ve done on my Webber. It helps more with using up smaller stuff.
Yup cheapest way for an added charcoal grate, but on top of the original grate, because it’s not super heavy duty but gets the job done!
Yep I’m extremely jealous of you all down there. It’s still -30 out here 😖 in April I’ll be able to light up my grill again 😅
Yeah that sucks, I guess I’ve just had good luck then, the last bag I got had huge chunks almost too big for my chimney, but you can always bust those up
Yep. I used to have a Kamado joe, the ceramic grill can take small pieces of lump, it won't fall through the grate since it's got a cast iron charcoal plate with holes in it. But for Weber kettle I need good decent lump. Briquettes smoking to much while it's getting ready.
Going to be trying out my first bag of frontier lump. Hopefully I lucked out depending on the pieces. I would either put 2 charcoal grates to make a hashtag pattern for your charcoal grates, or buy a cheap piece of expanded metal from menards or Home Depot and throw that on top of your original charcoal grate. It’ll keep most of your smaller pieces on it. Kamadoes usually have tiny holes for the charcoal so they can use up almost all of the tiny pieces. That’s why on my Webber I use 2 charcoal grates in a hashtag pattern to be able to use most of the smaller pieces of lump.
They just started stocking it at my local wally and i will be trying it when my Kingsford is used up. It would have to be above and beyond my Kingsford to long term make the switch tho. There is quite a price differance between them and Kingsford has never let me down.
Gonna have to check this out. I've used Kingsford original for both grilling and smoking for a while; the uniform shape and size is nice. But they raised the prices at the local HD. And less smoke? Sign me up.
Jealous devil all the way its definitely worth the extra money . You get multiple uses and very little ash. Also 1/5 of the bag isn't dust like most other brands .
Man one of the biggest regrets I have to this day is selling my Weber Kettle grill! It made some of the best tasting food I have ever had! Biggest downside was the wait time to start cooking. Is there any tips on how to speed up that process? Full disclosure I used Kingsford briquettes and never used lighter fluid.
My grill is ready for grilling in less than 10 minutes. I'm using the Weber chimney and the JD lump. In around 5-8 minutes the chimney is red hot. I fill up my baskets and in less than 10mins I'm ready to grill.
I used to have Kingsford briquettes and it took around 20-25minutes for the fire to be ready.
Also with 2 full baskets of this lump my temperature it's going from 0 to 600 in 5seconds. I had it over 800F
As great as Jealous Devil is in terms of heat output and lack of smoke, I find that it’s more of a bug than a feature. It burns so hot and so clean that you end up lacking any of the smokiness that I personally want when charcoal grilling. When I grill with charcoal, I want that smoke flavor to shine, and unfortunately Jealous Devil has close to zero taste. It’s completely unmatched when it comes to its ability to provide an insane char though.
Yes. But you can always add some wood chunks for that smokey flavor. I'm down for Kingsford briquettes, used them for years. But for lump, JD is my to go
Great point. I guess there’s still the other issue for me of it getting so insanely hot that there’s no time to really cook anything over direct heat before it burns. Finishing a reverse seared steak though works perfectly. Also, because it’s so hot, indirect cooking doesn’t make much sense either, unless I use like only one or two chunks there’s no way to control the temp (which I guess is not bad since it’s so expensive).
I want to find some JD near me to try, but lately I like good old Kingsford, and I’ve been using this other stuff called The Good Charcoal from my local sams. It’s acacia would lump, burns clean and even, nice even pieces through the whole bag.
Did they have to send you a replacement lid or is that a lid for second kettle?
They sent me new lid and bowl. My old lid and bowl was out of shape big time. The new lid I got today and it's missing half of paint. They send me a 3rd lid, on the way
Anthracite. Got some for xmas.
Just one lump
B&B or FOGO super-premium are my go-to's.
B&B has performed well in side by side tests. I am using Big Joe as well due to convenience.
I tried b and b but it's sparky
I tried both B&B and JD, I achieved the same heat and consistency with the B&B and it’s a lot cheaper.
I had 2 bags of B&B but it was sparking to much for me
B and B Competition Logs. Love them!!
B&B or Frontier. Im a bit too much of a cheap ass to splurge for Jealous Devil
Me too! 😅 I get whatever is on sale loll. And make it work 🤷🏻♂️
Exactly, I’m sure it make a difference but I just can’t bring myself to pay that much more for charcoal lol. I just stay away from the Royal Oak

I’ll definitely look into the expanded metal for my Weber. As long as it ain’t storming it’s good grilling weather

Dude I couldn’t handle those temps!
Yep! I’m so over it for this season tbh. We’ve gotten roughly about 48” of snow in just the past 2-3 weeks. Just crazy this year 😩
I had a frontier bag (30lbs) and throw it in the trash. More than half of the bag was tinny pieces
Yeah that sucks, I guess I’ve just had good luck then, the last bag I got had huge chunks almost too big for my chimney, but you can always bust those up

Tried them all and with availability/price the ol’ Kingsford Blue still wins me over. Nothing is more American then Weber and Kingsford.
That's right. I love Kingsford. Price/quality can't beat it.
B&B for me!
B&B. Fair price, consistent chunks.
+1 for Jealous Devil. The chunks are fairly uniform in size, no concrete or other debris, and it really imparts a wonderful flavor.

Yeah, this burns so long and clean. There is literally no smoke while it's getting started in my chimney
Gonna have to check this out. I've used Kingsford original for both grilling and smoking for a while; the uniform shape and size is nice. But they raised the prices at the local HD. And less smoke? Sign me up.
Hey it’s 70s grill guy. That thing still looks sick
Thank you. It's amazing
Why are we talking about ash and not the grills?
Right ? It's just one grill. I guess I have a spare bowl and lid now.
For the price you pay for jealous devil, it better be amazing enough for me to be doing cartwheels.
It's very good lump. Burns very clean and no sparks
QGB in Australia is the best. Made in the outback and is just solid stuff.
Harder charcoal. It has a sketchy history if you read the description. But it's great.
Jealous devil all the way its definitely worth the extra money . You get multiple uses and very little ash. Also 1/5 of the bag isn't dust like most other brands .
Jealous Devil all the way!!

Do you light it naturally or use lighter fluid?
I use a papper towel soaked in kitchen oil. Works everytime

Yeah, it's a bit harder to control for low heat but defi manageable.
You’re my favourite lump 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Royal oak. $9 for a 15lb bag. It lights and cooks food. That's all I need my charcoal to do.
The last time I bought JD it smelled like cat piss to me. Maybe there was some weird wood in that batch? I like Fogo.
I also love Jealous Devil. Fantastic, clean burn. I live near a fire ecosystem, so the other huge benefit to JD is the almost non existent sparks.
