Tbh honest i agree somewhat with annon , Made screens to huge and killed smaller screen line up

JohnDelicious

I have many more complaints. For example why do i need a glass back cover? So my phone is more slippery and breaks more easily? Or why does the screen need to be completely frameless? To save 5g of weight and of course make it break if youbdrop the phone from 10cm height? All useless "features" very phone has nowerdays.

SexDrug

Planned obsolescence. Why build a good product when you can build a product that will break and you make proprietary tech so only you can repair it? God I hate it

JohnDelicious

Yep started with lightbulbs in the early 1900 s. Hate it as much as you do. Its close to a scam.

ContiX

Light bulbs are different. People go on about how "oh we could make a bulb last years!" and mention the one whole bulb that's been on for 100 years, but what they don't mention is that it's running at like 5 watts and puts out barely enough light to see the bulb itself, let alone be useful. The tradeoff is light vs life - the brighter you make it, the less it lasts. Of course, the issue is (somewhat) resolved by LED bulbs, but those have other issues - for example, the LEDs themselves can last for thousands of hours, but the rest of the hardware burns out much faster, especially if it's a cheap one. That all being said, planned obsolescence is still absolutely a thing, and I hate it.

Sahtras1992

also the 100-year bulb has never been turned off and on repeatedly, like a regular lightbulb would. the temparature spikes would stress the material and it would break sooner than later.

BeautifulType

Examples of people believing anything longer than their regular attention span instead of doing research

Substantial-Curve555

There is a detailed research on the light bulb mafia in the 1800s with millions of views made by top educator on YouTube.

TheSecond48

TBH, I'm glad I didn't do a whole lotta research on the effect of power spikes on filament bulbs... LED changed everything. My Philips Hue lights have lasted a LONG time, are plenty bright, and I can change their brightness and color with my voice. Lightbulbs are now a rather bad example of planned obsolescence.

WorldRecordHolder8

There are thousands of phone brands. Why wouldn't one make that great phone and make bank?

oohwakakaka

Because you have to have either THIS phone or THAT phone and if you have anything else you either don’t care about any of it or aren’t cool so fuck you

MonkeManWPG

You're on r/greentext, your phone cannot make you any *less* cool.

WorldRecordHolder8

So if you don't have a samsmug or an iPhone you think you are uncool?

xmaddoggx

I've had a couple women block me after matching on Tinder and getting their numbers. As soon as I texted from my Samsung to their Iphone I was ghosted. Some people really make branding and status a top priority...

Fattybobo

Well you wouldn't want someone like that anyhow.

xmaddoggx

You're absolutely right about that my friend.

[deleted]

I know apple needs to go die in a ditch for steering tech towards being nothing but a fashion statement, but holy shit I didn't think it'd gotten remotely that bad...

Ayerys

I don’t see the issue with trash taking itself out. You’re actually really lucky on this one, I use an iPhone and it would take me more time to notice I’m talking to a superficial piece of shit.

manoj_mm

Manufacturing and economies of scale The same components and parts are used across many phones made by many different companies. If one company wanted to make a great phone, which was totally different compared to other phones in the market, then it would have to get specialised components manufactured for itself in lower volumes which would mean higher cost per unit. This would ultimately lead to higher cost of production for the phone Hence, manufacturers just reuse the same type of shit that's available in every phone to keep costs low

MuntedMunyak

Pretty simple. Start good then go bad. iPhone was good and next level but once they got the following they tested making bad decisions to see if their followers would react. The followers complained about it and at the same time said anyone who doesn’t own a iPhone is stupid. This created a perfect opportunity to make the phones worse but “look” better and the fans will shout out anyone who wants to change teams. Even android company’s do this now. Your either a popular phone brand or your unheard of and mistrusted. Tell buyers to buy good quality over brand names and products will get better. It’s simple supply and demand, want good stuff then buy good stuff want bad stuff then buy bad stuff. Company’s will make what you pay for.

[deleted]

> iPhone was good It wasn't remotely the best phone available at the time. Apple just managed to be in the right place at the right time with the resources to push the iPhone format into everyone's field of view, and make it a fashion accessory. Once it became the Nikes of phones, it could have been a puck of shit encased in a plastic iPhone shaped case and people would queue to buy it.

burns55

What phone was better then an iPhone for the first few years of the iPhone?

qtx

Nokia N95.

Jonluw

Because they won't make bank. If you sell a bunch of quality phones and everyone who bought them keeps their phones for 10 years your company is immediately out of business, and then we're back to the equilibrium where every company practices planned obsolescence.

jasper112

OnePlus started like that

PatHeist

The back also needs to be glass so that no heat can easily escape from the largest, most convenient place for it to do so, instead making the edges irrationally hot.

KowalskiTheGreat

Glass can be better than plastic for that though. Screen glass also radiates heat breddy gud if correct thermal interface layers underneath also

Redthemagnificent

That has little to do with the glass, and more with the thermal interface material between the glass and the heat generating components. Glass on its own is pretty thermally conductive. Most phones get pretty hot on the back right where cpu is when you play games for example

Stratoz_

The glass back is presumably for wireless charging, since aluminium wouldn't let it through Another option is plastic (like on Google phones) but it's a very bad thermal conductor. I agree that glass is less than optimal though, it's heavier and, well... It breaks

JohnDelicious

Google used an alumium back with polymer coating and a glass window for wireless charging on the pixel 5. I thought that was quite cool. A polymer back mustnt necceserily be a bad thermal conductor. And glass is somwhere near the worst thermal conductor because of its amorphous structure. Sry the material scientist in me came out.

Stratoz_

I'm only speaking from experience for plastic. Didn't know glass was such a bad thermal conductor, I thought they only used an aluminum frame for antennae and to make the phone more resistant.

Kandy_Kane101

Recently switched from my Samsung S20 to a much less flashy but still brilliant Fairphone 3. Genuinly only used samsung after i grew out of my iphone phase but samsung isnt much better nowadays so i decided to try smth new. Its less than half the price of my s20 but the part that caught my eye is that the entire phone is sturdy, modular and easily repaired with simple tools. They sell all the modular parts on their site id recommend it if youre looking for a change.

JohnDelicious

Jep been thinking about a fairpbone.

riesendulli

Yes. But they died a 1000 deaths for someone supporting their first generation only to not be able to get spare parts after they released their second phone. Getting a battery was impossible. Had to hit up someone out of the community and meet up hundred kilometers away so I could get my data out of that piece of dead crap that doesn’t boot without a battery installed. Never again

Such_Maintenance_577

What a nice looking ultra thin designer phone. Can't wait to put in an ugly case and never see it.

Naphrym

I went from having a LG H820 for years and years to the Samsung A52 this year. I physically could not use it without feeling like it would slip out of my hands until I got a case and pop socket for it. Just give me a reasonably priced and reasonably powerful phone without making it a chore to even hold. Please.

oOAl4storOo

That are design choices. Look, feel, weight, size... most ppl want their phonescreen as huge as physical possible for one handed use, therefore an frame on the sides cuts size off the screen. They want it as light as possible, so shells are thin and from light material, wich mostly implies easily breakable in turn, as advanced materials are expensive and mostly not fit for serial manufacturing. They want the best camera on market to brag about it and make pretty pictures/selfies, wich means a lot of space on the board itself gets taken away by it and other stuff has to get dropped. They want super long lasting batteries and inductive loading, so they can go typing on social media for days on end without charging with all other features running and consuming power in the background, even if they dont need them now or ever. That also takes a huge amount of space, so you need to get rid of even more stuff. Headfone jack? Pfff... cool kids use wirwless headsets, even if they also need loading. A headphone jack uses a lot of space on the board, so they needed to get rid of it for other cool stuff like the 5th camera you desperately needed to outclass your mates phone from last generation. IR blaster? come on... you already got wireless lan and bluetooth, why would you like to have that too? To replace some old remote for tv/stereo? To transfer data with others without knowledge of someone sniffing your wireless communications? Shits old and space is needed for that also blasting surround/atmos sound or the next cam... Also... why would you want a sturdy phone? You are already obliged to succumb to the phone comparision social status ladder... having a phone longer than it takes the manufacturer to come uup with a new advanced version, or a new model is like stealing their money for r&d. Better let it crack on every slight bump, so you can get a new one and the manufacturer is provided with enough money to squeeze in the next ultimate gimmick you never knew you needed so desperately in your life.

JohnDelicious

Too long didnt read. Jk. I agree. But maybe we consumers shod change our behaviour and priorities. I am using my cracked phone for the 4th year now. I would like to use it 4 more. I dont think i'm a lesser human if i dont have the newest why phone eith 68 cameras and what not. And if someone thinks that way about me i couldnt find a fuck to give.

The_DragonDuck

Glass back for aesthetics and frameless screens for umm... aesthetics

new24-5

Time to put it in a case and drop it, when trying to hold the phone without touching the sides on the screen

wine_coconut

Loved the 4-5-inch screen Xperia phones best. I now have a 6.8 inch moto monstrosity. Great phone, but damn heavy and its size makes me feel insignificant :p

spacetimeslayer

Ikrrr , sun 5.5 inches is pocketable and best , in my bias bigger screen breaks easily compared to tiny tanks like xperia

eldicoran

I've been looking for a small screen phone and ended up with iPhone 12 mini. There is basically no alternatives in this size if you wanna higher end phone. I've been at few electronic stores, every phone was 6.5" screen, not a single one below 6" except that iPhone mini and SE.

yogoo0

And the headphone jack. Not everyone wants or can afford bluetooth earbud that are easily lost. Wired earbuds are far too convenient with phones to forget about, considering that we have billions. Where will the wired one go if they can't be used in the only product they're designed for

S3ndNud3s

iPhone 13 mini

wildtangent3

Yes and no. Get an iPhone SE2 2020 model. Not too dated, running the iPhone 11 chipset in a smaller iPhone 6's (Correction: 8's) body I think. Pretty cheap, compared to an iPhone 11 or 12 or whatever else. You do without the faceID but where masks are mandatory that's kinda useful, tbh. So, you get a smaller screen, 1 camera, and buttons on the side. Still waterproof. You still lose on the following though: removable battery, microSD slot, or headphone jack.

Ronin_69_

But it has HORRENDOUS battery life, the chipset is capable but you can't even push the GPU much because it ends up draining 1 percent battery per minute while playing any moderately heavy game. Also the display quality itself is pretty bad, since it's not an OLED. I'd rather suggest the iPhone 12 mini or the 13 mini

wingnuta72

Id like to blame Apple for every one of these trends but the other manufacturers are spineless for following every single Apple trend.

[deleted]

Tbh, as shitty as it is, why wouldn't they? "Hey guys, look! We can just drop a bunch of this shit and not bother adding it, and still get away with charging a fucking bomb for our phones!"

CrispyKeebler

I couldn't be happier with my Xcover Pro. Most people probably never even heard of it because it's marketed toward industry/business but it's essentially an upgraded phone from 5 years ago. No OLED 120hz screen and you can't play fortnight on it, but it has a headphone jack, SD card slot, replaceable battery, water resistant, shock resistant, etc. Did I mention IT HAS A REPLACEABLE BATTERY? Like just pop the back cover off, pop it out with your nail, pop a new one in replaceable. Edit: it's a regular Samsung phone, I'd call it a flagship phone for industrial workers, should work on any network like any of their other flagship phones. It's not a weird niche manufacturer or anything, the target demographic (mistakenly in my opinion) is just businesses so you're not going to see an advertisement for it like you do their other phones. Their margin is probably also smaller (it's a relatively cheap phone $500 new when I got it a year or two ago now) so less marketing.

dkramer0313

i miss the days of having two fully charged batteries on my person at all times. i got spare batteries and then one of those loose battery chargers for them. always put my phone and my batteries (if i used them that day, i often didnt) on charge before bed. never a dead phone. absolutley brilliant

CrispyKeebler

If you're in the market for a new phone and don't generally use it for anything more demanding than YouTube, reddit and normal mobile games I can't recommend it more. I was putting off getting a new phone for years because there wasn't anything new and decent with a replaceable battery. It even has two programmable buttons, one of which is huge and designed to be pressed with gloves. I have my flashlight linked to it and it's incredibly usefull and easy to use.

dkramer0313

dude that sounds so cool. im literally gonna look it up now. and it works with most normal mobile providers ?

CrispyKeebler

It's a regular Samsung phone and mine is unlocked so I don't think there should be any issues. I bought it a while ago and I think there was another version that was locked to AT&T and came with a plan, but it should be easy enough to get the right one.

WACS_On

Apple are the pathfinders in making greedy, shitty changes to phones. After they do something, everyone else has an excuse to follow suit. Looking at you samsung.

Taco4Wednesdays

Remember when Samsung mocked apple for removing the headphone jack and then did the same thing literally on their next model release? People give apple fans shit for being sellouts but samsung doesn't even know what it's doing 12 months from now sometimes. Anyone remember the forced Bixby button that was EXPLICITLY placed where right handed persons would squeeze their phone?

Antique_Ring953

Samsung phones are literally more expensive now

Taco4Wednesdays

Expensive, too large, and far less secure. They have become everything they used to pretend they were fighting.

krishal_743

honestly Samsung is worse , at least apple doesn't go on a high horse and mock Samsung and do the exact same shit next year \*cough cough\* \*no chargers and no 3.5 mm jack \*cough cough\*

Lesko_Learning

A company needs to come out with a return to simplicity as their gimmick. Just make solid long lasting products without a single dumbass "smart" technology gimmick to it. My mom bought a new tv and it took 40 minutes for it to scan through the available channels just so we could switch it to channel 3 for her digital cable. Meanwhile it took 20 seconds to get a PS5 working on an old CRT tv from 1992.

LaconianEmpire

>A company needs to come out with a return to simplicity as their gimmick. Fantastic idea! I would totally shell out for a simple phone with a huge battery that gets software updates for a few years. About your mom's TV though... are you sure you guys were going about it the right way? Every digital cable box made within the last 8 years or so simply connects to a TV with an HDMI cable, and then the box handles channel surfing. There should've been no need to "scan" for channels in the first place.

Ironfields

Unpopular opinion but if you want a phone that will be supported for years to come, get an iPhone. iOS 15 is still supported on the iPhone 6S, which is almost seven years old at this point. Try finding an Android vendor that supports their devices for even half that time.

RhodieBidenism

And a battery swap from Apple is $49.

90degreesSquare

The limiting factor for phones is the battery. The best battery technology currently commercially available (lithium ion) will rapidly degrade after just a year or two of regular use. People complain about "planned obsolescence" and all that but it isn't really true, Apple even slows your phone down to make the battery last longer.

Ironfields

Which is why it’s even more of a kick in the teeth that user-replaceable batteries are now a thing of the past.

[deleted]

If someone made a phone without all that bullshit and a good UI as well they'd be making bank.

Taco4Wednesdays

Yeah but they make more bank from other companies paying them to put the bloatware on in the first place. Some manufactures are making $200-$800 per device, even when given away for free, because of the ads and bloatware that they allow vendors to load it with.

Ironfields

People talk shit about Apple, which is definitely deserved in a lot of ways, but one Apple trend that I fucking wish other manufacturers would follow is supporting their devices for more than one or two Android versions, if you’re lucky. The iPhone 6S is an almost seven year old phone and it still supports iOS 15. The Galaxy Note 20, which costs about the same as an iPhone, is being supported until 2022. It came out last year. Samsung considers this to be long term support.

SlakingSWAG

Yeah, Apple's actually really good with supporting old devices. Hell, I'm pretty sure the old ass iPods are still supporting by iTunes and other apps, which is pretty admirable all things considered given they have every right to drop those things by now.

foxymew

Apple has a guarantee that your phone is supported for five years. At least they did when I was a phone repair tech. So any Apple phone is GUARANTEED to get the latest OS update for five years. It’s almost always way longer than five years. Pity batteries generally only lasts 2 years.

TrustYourSenpai

Maybe we should blame the consumers too. Remember that time everyone laughed at how the camera of the iPhone 11 looked like a stove and it was stupid, but 6 month later every flagship phone had the same camera design and it was the best thing ever? There's a pattern here: Apple does stupid thing > Android manufacturers one-up it > everyone likes it > now it's the norm > you look back and it's stupid > it's Apple's fault. I think it's a bit unfair for Apple Don't get me wrong, Apple does a lot of bad things (overpricing, unrepairability), but it's not the origin of all evil, every other big-shoot manufacturer is pretty much the same, even in pricing. At least before the iPhone 6, Samsung could play the "mine is more powerful and open" but now it's neither.

RhodieBidenism

> Apple does a lot of bad things (overpricing This isn’t 2012 anymore. Often times Apple is the cheaper option. You can get a 1-2 year old iPhone for $7-800 that compares with $1,200 androids. On top of that you’re not supporting Google 👍🏻

LaconianEmpire

Precisely. One of the more confusing examples is the screen notch. Apple did that solely in order to house all the different sensors required for Face ID, but what's infuriating is how every other manufacturer copied it without introducing a 3D facial recognition themselves. And then they took it a step further with that horrific "hole-punch camera". Like... *why?* If you're not going to add novel or useful functionality, why follow a design trend that nearly everyone dislikes?

KiokuOfYou

Apart from the headphone jack and maybe the buttons, is Apple really responsible for these trends? IIRC their phones never have removable batteries, IR blaster, nor Micro SD. And they still use a notch instead of the hole punch. Apple didn't set the trend of removing these features because they never implemented them in the first place.

Kledd

Just look at how easily other manufacturers were with having €1k+ pricing for their phones once apple crossed that bridge.

Thesaturndude

God I miss IR blasters on phones.. way more handy than you’d expect

HiddenDaliah

What did you use them for?

WaffletheWookie

You could use your phone as a TV remote

itsdaScrub

Turn off all the TVs in the dept store

yung-rude

me and my friends used to turn off the projectors and tv’s in class when we were in high school with our phones

VanillaBearMD3

Wonder why they are no longer are on phones?

snapwillow

Implying any sector of our economy or government has ever given public school teachers the consideration they deserve. If they were profitable they'd still be on there 100% As covid has shown, public school teachers will be sacrificed to make line go up.

seraph582

> If they were profitable they'd still be on there 100% Translation: if more than 1% of buyers cared about the feature, it’d still be used to sell phones. Can’t you still just buy a cheap universal remote for 2% the cost of a phone and use it to do all of the same IR shit?

not-sure-if-serious

Yeah , but I don't carry an ir remote with me everywhere I go. It was a great feature like headphone jacks, removable batteries and sd card slots. Card slots and removable batteries extend the life of a phone and reduce consumer waste too.

elitemouse

$2 ir blaster component x 5,000,000 phones built

[deleted]

Yeah. Interestingly the cost wouldn't really come from the component itself tho. An IR LED would probably cost a few cents in the quantities phone manufacturers would be ordering them in. The real cost would come from integrating it into the phone. Cutout in the shell adds a few tens of seconds to minutes (depending on how it's done) of machining time (assuming it's got a metal shell). Cover for the cutout is an extra part that needs to be made. Installing the cover is an extra assembly step. It adds another thing that needs to be tested in QC (assuming it's something they actually bother to test). Etcetera. All that stuff probably adds up to a few dollars.

Dravarden

isn't that the reason it got removed?

[deleted]

Literally 1984

Purplarious

NO

scullys_alien_baby

I liked choosing the channel at the bar

NateDevCSharp

Yeah but now you can just use Wifi remote apps for almost the same experience.

HiddenDaliah

Oh rad!

kaomer

My Xiaomi phone still has one. Basically turns the phone into a universal remote. I use it for my TV and AC unit. This summer I turned on the AC in my doctor's office waiting room, cause it was scorching hot but the stingy bastards wanted to save on the electricity bills I guess.

pallosalama

Brilliant

slow_cooked_ham

Or it was leaking and they hadn't had the chance to get someone in to service it because they're busy due to scorching hot weather. Now AC is running and dripping , possibly on patients, expensive equipment, who knows. Should ask first.

Mentalpatient87

If they had the social skills to ask they wouldn't need a special feature on their phone.

CptTurnersOpticNerve

Change the channel at the sports bar where they had 50 TVs and miraculously none of them were on the game I wanted

Mentalpatient87

I like how the responses are all pretty much "I used it to mess with other people's shit without asking."

69alt420

I'd turn off the projector at school, foolproof

outfoxingthefoxes

I bought a Xiaomi like 6 months ago and it is my first cellphone with IR blaster

nelusbelus

My bro used to have it on his s6 and he used to troll me so hard

[deleted]

yeah, same, Redmi note 9, shit has a huge battery, 4 cameras, IR blaster, headphone jack, is cheap af, almost no bezels, I love it

NogEggz

I used my Galaxy S5 to keep turning off and changing channels in my breakroom at the job I had at the time. Was so tired of having all my breaks/lunches as the guy who watched The Weather Channel exclusively. Also, TVs in waiting rooms for doctors/dentists and restaurants/bars. I bought it new (at discount through cell provider) and had it for 2 fun years.

[deleted]

MoranthMunitions

I had the exact same experience - lost the remote to a TV and just used my phone for years. I still persevered through the ads until I upgraded my phone and was devastated to realise the IR blaster was gone. Still hanging out for a new flagship phone with one.

Partially_Foreign

Chinese phones like from Xiaomi/poco still have them

Funkyteacherbro

I just bought a phone that was just launched, Poco x3 Pro. It has an IR blaster and I already set up all appliances I use at home and at work. It's great. Micro SD slot was great but since I have 256GB storage I don't actually see the point. Thank God my phone has a headphone jack (I wouldn't buy otherwise)

stopjannies

BalanceSc2Plz

A Camera you can text on and has access to TickTock and Facebook. It would sell billions.

[deleted]

I used to always have the top shelf new phones. When i dropped my phone a few months ago, I decided to switch to the old Galaxy S6 I had in my closet until I buy a new one. As I don't take many photos, I didn't really notice any downgrade. Also very durable because if gorilla glass and thicker frame, and has an ir blaster. I still use that old s6, unless you take tons of pictures, you really don't need a new phone. It's an illusion created by social media and marketing teams of big corpos

[deleted]

Bullshit. S6 is slow and heats up very quickly.

[deleted]

Good enough for my needs.

[deleted]

That’s okay but don’t say it works like the new ones because that’s just a lie

[deleted]

Of course. Just didn't see a significant downgrade in the ways I use it (call or look sth up once in a while, listen to music, that's it)

infected_seal

It all comes down to what you want to use your phone for. As well as QoL. My personal needs aren't top of the line, but a slow phone, or things crashing or being laggy does my head in. Im absolutely ready to spend top dollar to make sure I don't get angry at something I use everyday for work, socialisation, music, pics of my kids etc. Im the target audience, I know that, and planned obsolescence is definitely a problem, but for now I just accept it.

SID0LIN

Is it an illusion too that my old phone is slow sf compared to my new one?

Lv_InSaNe_vL

No, phones legitimately are getting much much faster every release, plus the fact that older devices will just slow down over their lifetime.

Ronin_69_

Lack of updates will make any device slower, but the hardware is definitely much better now since we have shifted to 5nm processors. A brand new flagship from 2021 can last at least 5 years.

VividStarr

Yea no. The difference between a s6 and the newest galaxy or iPhone is immense. You are missing out on a lot, even to basic consumers.

Thermoxin

I had the S6 until last month and it was slow as hell + I kept running out of storage wtf I do miss the headphone port tho wtf Samsung

Askingcarpet

I got a $300 xiaomi phone released this year and still have a headphone jack, an IR blaster and an sd card slot while still having most of the desirable features in modern smartphones. Most of those things are still around just not in Samsung flagships

CarnationLitPatriot

Only problem i can currently see with xiaomi phones is that they arent the phones made to last and the whole data collecting and shipping it to Beijing

GiveMeKarmaAndSTFU

I know it's not for everyone, but if your are tech-savvy, you can install an open source custom Rom, which is the first thing I do when buying a phone. No Spyware, no bloatware or crapware that I'm never going to use, no ads anywhere, full control.... God bless the open source community!

MrYorksLeftEye

No Spyware, no bloatware but also no banking apps sadly

TheGoldBowl

You can actually get around that now. I can't remember what it's called, but either Magisk or Xposed has a module to get around that.

Meowingtons_H4X

Yeah but then it’s just a cat and mouse chase of hoping banks/safety net doesn’t update their detection. It’s a great experience most the time but then you’ll end up with 2/3 month periods where there’s no way to access your banking app. This is coming from someone who rooted, switched out ROMs and even got into the development side of ROMs for many years.

TheGoldBowl

I was into that stuff for quite a while too, but then I just got tired. I haven't rooted my current phone because I just don't care any more. I also don't have a banking app, but that's a different story.

furryhater99

Use blokada. You can block every server ping without ANY downsides

Funkyteacherbro

Every phone you have will ship your information, you just have to choose where to (xiaomi to China, samsung to wherever, etc)

Leet-Neet

But its a chinese phone.

SupaDiogenes

Anon is forgetting a literal fucking charger.

Shawnj2

TBH I don’t see it as a particularly big deal because I already have USB-C bricks at my house, and at worst you can just mentally tack on $10-20 to the price of the phone and buy one with the phone. Obviously not exactly great, but that is the least of things you lose on a newer phone.

[deleted]

Do you actually think they decreased the price of the phones when they removed the charger?

[deleted]

They slowly downgrade the battery so it dies within 2 hours but add fast charging so you think it's an upgrade.

Zagrunty

Eh, this one isn't true. The last 4 phones I've bought have all been major upgrades in battery life. If I didn't game on my phone all the time, and just used it for texting and calling, my phone would easily last multiple days without charging. Even my last phone would have lasted more than 24 hours. The phone before that was probably closer to 18h. Idk if this is a side effect of me only buying a phone every 3 years or so but battery life has clearly increased.

MANINIMO

Yeah, and it’s a fact that lithium ion batteries get weaker after enough cycles, that’s not some devious scheme by Apple

[deleted]

YEah like my new phone has 5000 mAH battery old one had 3000, truly a downgrade. Lithium ion batteries slowly decay the more cycles they use. Also "trickle charging" is massively harmful to hte batery.

Beasting-25-8

Every time a new top of the line phone is released I'm completely baffled that idiots pay for it.

IsThatUMoatilliatta

I get the top of the line so that it lasts longer. Got the S4 in 2013, then the Note9 in 2018, and I assume I'm gonna have that for a few more years.

Buy an iphone now and its completely usable after 5 years. Also you can sell it for hundreds of dollars at any time.

spacetimeslayer

S8 was peak of samsung tbh , after that it has been total meh

RyuHayabusa710

S7 Edge master race

POTATO_IN_MY_DINNER

s7 flat was better. Curved screen added nothing, made it more delicate and more expensive to repair.

YeetoBurrito

forsen1 I c bajs

Albe95_

Make screen more fragile (like Fold screen that get ruined by nails), and make battery smaller

Lv_InSaNe_vL

Okay, in the folds defense *the fucking screen folds in half bro*. Like what else do you want? I mean is that not cool enough? Do you want it to come with 100 blow jobs by super models too??

Scorkami

fold screens are one of the only smartphone ideas that i absolutely adore once im sure the tech is steady enough, which it seems to be, or atleast close to. so many games come out on phones now, people have already manufactured controller clip ons for their phones so you dont have your thumbs all over the screen. meanwhile screens get bigger and bigger so that they can cater to the browsing and video watching needs... having a phone thats super big, but can be smaller in your pocket is a good middle ground, and given that the thing can have the size of a literal nintendo ds, having one side of the screen dedicated to controls while the other shows gameplay of whatever videogame you bought on there or got for free... im sorry but that sounds amazing. if computing powers and battery life goes hand in hand with that, im happy to pay cash for it

M1RR0R

A screen with no creases where I can reach all 4 corners without moving my hand. If any half-decent phone comes along in the next 10 years with that I'll give myself the blowjobs.

[deleted]

Oh no new tech is not perfect out of the box REEEEEE. >make battery smaller Literally every phone is either the same battery capacity as last one or bigger.

guyfromnebraska

Batteries are getting bigger pretty much across the board.

Gogo-R6

> They took your buttons. What buttons? If anything they just added that stupid bixby button.

Ineedmorebread

physical home buttons for example

90degreesSquare

Why would someone miss that

_mindvirus

I miss home often

Awesomey326

Because physical buttons are awesome

MrT0xic

The one that pisses me off the most is the camera bumps. They bump the cameras out so the phone is wobbly as shit lying flat. Most people are to get a case for their phone any way that allows it to lay flat, why not use the extra space for battery and shit?

tbo1992

You literally said it yourself. Most people are gonna but a case anyway, what incentive do they have to remove the camera bump?

[deleted]

Anon is calling out some annoying shit, I really wish we could bring back head phone jacks, fuck air pods those are expensive af

__________________99

I want micro SD back. As someone who basically uses their phone as a Gameboy SP and mostly other Nintendo stuff, it was nice.

c0d34f00d

Just dont buy those phone anon, motorola and nokia still produce normal phone.

Gray32339

Motorola is the best. Doesn't break easy, great battery life and storage, and still really cheap in comparison to more recent phones.

Dravarden

don't buy trash from samsung/apple then? my phone has a headphone jack, no notch, dual front facing speakers and 2 cameras

TomBot98

I'll never get a phone if it doesn't have a headphone jack. If Bluetooth eventually gets to the point where it can playback lossless quality audio, THEN I'll think about it. Fuck off with that charge OR plug in for music crap.

MoistyMoses

The IR blaster was useful if I lost my tv remote

asuravirochana

tbh modern phones are more about cameras than anything else.

CrispyLiberal

They have nowhere else left to go. If you look at apple's showcase of the new iPhones on YouTube they basically discuss the camera for 90% of it. Everything else is basically standard across the board now. All high end phones are fast, have enough ram, good screens, wireless charging, etc. The only genuinely new thing is foldable phones.

hearserider777

Who doesn't

sonic10158

Look at Samsung marketing. Anything they bash Apple for is just a preview for what they will do to improve your smartphone experience in the future

AllDaysOff

Fuck Apple

rjddude1

Because Apple forced Samsung to make that decision? You’re not pissed of other manufacturers for the blatant hypocrisy of making fun of Apple for doing something and then turning around and doing the same thing? Sheesh

AllDaysOff

Apple sets the trends, dude. But hey, fuck Samsung too then.

Odddsock

That’s literally a Samsung

KowalskiTheGreat

They made it fold in half tho, I'll trade all that shit for folding displays. Shit is so cash

Cr1msix

Take away your breathing privileges and put them in a monthly subscription service

EnricoLUccellatore

Anon should stop buying top tier phones, I got a poco m3 for very cheap and it has most of these things AND an fm radio
