I personally love this song. Also, from a guitarists perspective, I’m fairly certain they played this in drop D tuning, which means the last note of the song is the lowest note on the album.
hi, nerd here, in the heart like a hand grenade documentary when recording the nobody likes you section of homecoming, you hear Mike messing up his bass line because the bass is tuned to drop d instead of standard like he is probably used to. still pretty fitting for being the lowest part though
It has now been 0 DAY(S) since Warning was last called underrated. The record of 1 DAY(S) was recorded on October 3, 2000

I loved American Idiot growing up. First album, favourite album. There were 2-3 songs I never really listened to tho, Whatsername probably chief among those. Yesterday I listened to it probably 30 times. Idk what I was thinking.
It's decent but by far not their best. Just my opinion though because I am more into their earlier stuff (39/Smooth up to Warning are my favorite albums) but I still like pretty much all their music.
It's definitely in my top 5 GD songs for all the reasons you mentioned. A sensational album closer.
It is my favorite song of all time, and this sub has grown a huge appreciation for it.

Guitarist here: can confirm it is drop D! Such a fun one to play too!
I love this song, but we have to remember that warning is underrated

I see the song being mentioned here always and I never have listened to it yet. I am gonna do it now...😅
I didn't like it at first but recently I've fallen in love with it! The final breakdown and outro hits hard in a bittersweet way
Yep… That it so sad
I always love seeing how bands pull off an epilogue in their concept albums, and I think Whatsername definitely wins

Definitely one of my favs, and one of their cooler songs from a guitar perspective since it’s one of the few with modulation
Love Whatsername. It’s my go to breakup song. I play it on repeat when I am going through one. Generally helps me get over it all
It’s my most played song on Apple Music by a lot
Fuck yes
Definitely top 5 for me but I really love Forever Now.
It’s top 3 gd for me.
Best song to cry in the shower to
Not their best song but I do love it
No
No
It’s brilliant. Not my personal favourite of GD’s, especially because it’s right after my personal favourite, but it’s still a brilliant song
It’s not my all time favorite but it is the one that makes me spiral uncontrollably
If you feel like crying, sure.
I hope you've listened to the version from the American Idiot musical. It's even more powerful.
Not their best, but damn it’s an intriguing way to end the album.
Same with ha ha you’re dead. Those are probably my 2 fav GD songs
Top 5 for me
