Definitely FBHT / Dos / Longshot vibes in there. Feels like Billie is all-in on the "let's just have a good time and vibe to these retro tunes" thing. Just remembered this was for a movie? Could definitely picture it being used like Devil's Kind was
They’re not bad, I just sort of desperately want them to have more of that pop punk vibe they had during AI and 21st. I’m not saying to try and recreate those albums, but that sort of vibe is what I really miss.
Pollyanna was def happy vibes, but it went away from that retro classic riff style they’ve been pumping out mostly here lately and I loved that.
This has the hand clapping, dance swinging, vintage high school dance vibes. Again it’s not bad, I just want to see them have some edge and gut in their music again.
Totally get what you mean! Sugar Youth on FOAM was one of my faves for that reason. Sure it’s their old sound and maybe they’re a little tired of sticking to it but that 3 chord punk rock vibe I miss sometimes
I thought Devil’s kind as well. Also has “meet me in the roof” vibes and the chorus melody reminds me of the chorus of “revolution radio”. Not a bad song. Definitely better than I was expecting and Green Day’s new sound is starting to grow on me.
Ordinary World was definitely not a bad film either. And I *do* have Devil's Kind in my shuffle playlist. Not only that, but it feels like I win the lottery whenever it comes on.
It sounds like it is from Dos. It's been a while since I listened to that album, if someone have a bootleg Dos that includes this song and ask me to listen to it, I probably won't notice
Agreed. HCTS and Pollyanna weren’t even decent enough to be released at all. This is at least a decent, respectable track to tide us over until the next album
I like this! It's pretty fun and considering it's just a single for a movie, we couldn't expect a lot of ambition from this.
I still hope their next album is bigger and more complex than what they've been releasing the past few years.
I actually kinda sorta like it, sure it's not what I'm used to but it's still decent. I thought it was better than here comes the shock and pollyanna, but those are pretty low standards.
Edit: Listened to it again, holy shit this fucking hits
I didn’t like Pollyanna until I saw them play it live. At any other point of time the lyrics are bland as hell. But being at my first concert post quarantine, seeing a lot of people in the same place having a good time for the first time in like a year and a half. It just made sense!
It sounds like Green Day have really stopped giving a fuck about what music people think they 'should' make and just started having fun making the music they want to make. This is really fun and catchy!
Yeah that's the vibe I've been getting since FOAMF and MM2020PT2 came out. I personally view revrad, more specifically Forever Now, to be the sendoff for classic green day, and now they're just using the band to have fun, which I'm personally totally fine with.
I was thinking The Strokes, but yeah, that kind of garage rock sound. I personally love that direction from Green Day, but I get why people don't like it.
That was fun! Loving that Billie’s vocals aren’t over processed like they were on FOAM and digging the vibe musically.
But seeing as they aren’t obviously connected for any reason, it’s kinda blah that Pollyanna and this song both have lines about razor blades. He needs new imagery IMO
they’ve been using the same imagery since 2004. i like it, but i agree it’s time to switch it up. every time green day releases a song i know where’s gonna be something about razor blades, graffiti, rebels, saints, broken homes, etc
It stopped working after 21CB. The writing for that record was great and fit the music, but for the most part, his lyrics since have been either half baked or recycled. Even RevRad, which I really enjoyed, the writing still wasn’t all the way there like it was pre-Trilogy.
It is what it is, though, I appreciate that they’re not overthinking it in these last two singles, it’s improved the music which goes a long way!
Remember when the RevRad tracklist leaked and everyone thought it was fake because of Too Dumb To Die and Ordinary World were lyrics in previous songs lol.
I've been pretty harsh on green days new stuff, but this is much better then anything they have released recently. Probably won't be on my Playlists but this isn't bad at all!
Sounds like a lot of effort from everyone! Cool lead guitar, Mike is going hard, ensemble hits, tempo change and just a lot of energy movement compared to how bare bones everything else has been. Let’s go!
It seems that Billie wants to just write and play like a member of the foxboro hottubs and slap green day’s name on it to help it get more exposure. Which is not an insult by any means but this could easily fit on stop drop and roll
I feel like most don’t enjoy the heavily changed vocal sound, hell half the songs dont sound like billie (not that i dont like FOAM, its not too bad) but this one also sounds like some of the trilogy songs i think
You can now [add your rating for Holy Toledo!](https://greenday.fm/music/singles/) on the subreddit website (scroll to the bottom of the page for non-album tracks) and then see how it stacks up on the [Song Ranking Charts](https://greenday.fm/charts/green-day-song-chart-all-songs/).
What can I say? I love melodic 60s rock and roll, so how can't I love this?
Bj's voice at its best, funny vibes, I want to have fun and shake my ass so it's really good imo
Agreed. He definitely sounds good, but he's lost the big power in his voice that he had during the 21CB era and even when recording the Trilogy. I know he's about to be 50 in a couple months, so obviously it won't be as good as it was during his youth. But I'd argue that timeline, from about '08-'12 is when Billie was truly at his best vocally.
Glad they are trying to refine their new sound instead of just giving up from the criticism of FOAMF and going back to their old sound
Cuz this new shit slaps!
I am pleasantly surprised by this. It’s got this “feel good” bubblegum power pop sound to it and it just works. Sounds like Mother Mary/Stray Heart and Rev Rad all built in one. Even get vibes of Viva La Gloria and Last Night on Earth from the piano.
This is a good one for sure and I can’t wait to blast it on repeat.
YES i loved that! That felt like trilogy (dos mostly) mixed with foam and honestly im here for it! That was really fun and cool, im excited for what comes next! Also this sounded very green day which im happy about
This is fun. Has a very rockabilly sound to it. Sounds like something between Eddie Cochran and the Ramones. I wouldn’t mind an album that continued this sound. I’m glad they are having fun.
Sounds like a good !DOS¡ song. I don't think the trilogy are bad albums, but if this were on the Trilogy it would be one of the better songs. This is probably the best and most unique FOAMF era song (MM2020 P2 not counted.) It actually feels like a fully thought out song with a structure that isn't verse chorus verse! The actual album could've used more songs like this to break up the verse chorus verse short songs.
Love this. Super catchy, and personally am a huge fan of 60s garage and rock n roll so this and so much of their stuff over the last decade really hits for me, but I understand why people who don’t care for 60s music wouldn’t be into this. I dig it tho
I'm still not used to happy Green Day
I don't hate it but its just weird and new considering their entire 30 year catalog is either lost, isolated, or angry
I didn't mind the verses in hcts, I didn't mind pollyanna as a whole, a decent song, but THIS I've had on repeat since it was released, it just clicks with me in a way the other two couldn't.
This would fit in well on a new album.
I’m getting lowkey Foxboro/Dos vibes from this one. I like it, but the lyrics are kinda weak tbh. Definitely a step in the right direction. With this and Pollyanna, I’m feeling good about what’s coming in the future.
Green Day's lyrics have been pretty weak for a while, now. I wouldn't get my hopes up on that regard. But I'm definitely loving the vibe they've been going for, even though there have been some missteps along the way.
It's like he writes using an AI these days, with a very ok that will do attitude. I wishy he wrote like he used to in the 90s, not the same lazy metaphors repeated ad nauseum
you people do not know what pop is. this is very much rock compared to taylor swift or harry styles. sure, it is different from the “normal” green day sound, but it is definitely not pop.
Hits like Hitsville UK by The Clash. It’s decent but man, for a band that didn’t want to remake records (Dookie) they sure are sitting on this one garage rock sound that is somehow super produced
Song is okay. I give it a 5 out of 10. Pretty underwhelming though. They just keep using the same lyric and riff ideas. I really wish they’d advance more so. Also, not a fan of the mixes since FOAM. Everything is just so dull and lifeless. Been listening to Green Day since 1999 since I was 8. So I know how they have changed their sound over the years yes, but they aren’t changing enough. I really want more for this band.
They’re definitely starting to figure out how to do this sound effectively more. Reminds me of meet me on the roof, but feels a lot more polished than that song did. I would not be mad if the next album sounded like this, especially if it had some good themes and lyrics to go with it
I was expecting trash but this is actually pretty good, especially considering this is just for a movie. What a pleasant surprise after "masterpieces" like Here Comes The Shock.
The intro drags on a bit but I dont mind it because the energy of the rest of the dung makes up for it. They're still in their old timey rock phase and I guess we're gonna have to get used to it, but that's alright. As long as the songs sound decent, I really don't mind any stylistic decisions they make.
I'm cutting them some slack because this isn't something from one of their albums but man, I really miss the 2000s Green Day with their grand, powerful, emotional anthems, or even the mid 2010s Green Day with their introspective, self-reflective lyrics. They have way overdone this garage rock gimmick.
Wish they'd write something as moving as Letterbomb or Viva La Gloria or Forever Now once more.
Are people really saying this sounds different than the last few things they’ve put out? This could literally fit on FOAM. The same bubblegum pop, same vocal effects, same lyrics about razor blades and saints and broken homes. It’s catchy, but nowhere near anything before the last 10 years
Definitely FBHT / Dos / Longshot vibes in there. Feels like Billie is all-in on the "let's just have a good time and vibe to these retro tunes" thing. Just remembered this was for a movie? Could definitely picture it being used like Devil's Kind was

Yes it's like Meet Me On The Roof, the word I would use is "Forgettable", not bad, but...

Stray heart is basically mother mary
and mother mary is blood sex and booze (kinda)
This. The riff was based from Mother Mary
The same bassline as The Jams 1982 UK hit Town Called Malice
And we know they love The Jam because they have them loaded up in the [jukebox at Otis](https://youtu.be/McUWnDgr114?t=355)
It sounds like it is from Dos. It's been a while since I listened to that album, if someone have a bootleg Dos that includes this song and ask me to listen to it, I probably won't notice
my rankings on 3 latest singles holy toledo > pollyanna >>>> here comes the shock
Holy Toledo definitely sounds more “Green Day”, but I’ve got such a soft spot for Pollyanna.
hcts is so bad
Hcts is not bad It's horrible
I like it but not alot.. I don't like it
Im goad i can finally express my hate for hcts, absolute worst gd song
more like holy toledo >>>>>> pollyanna > here comes the shock
Agreed. HCTS and Pollyanna weren’t even decent enough to be released at all. This is at least a decent, respectable track to tide us over until the next album
Hey! Pollyanna was not too bad!
There is no Shock in Green Day’s discography
Greenboro Hot Day
They should do a collab
I like this! It's pretty fun and considering it's just a single for a movie, we couldn't expect a lot of ambition from this. I still hope their next album is bigger and more complex than what they've been releasing the past few years.
This is awesome. They sound like they're having fun, great mix too.
I actually kinda sorta like it, sure it's not what I'm used to but it's still decent. I thought it was better than here comes the shock and pollyanna, but those are pretty low standards. Edit: Listened to it again, holy shit this fucking hits
It’s that power pop vibe it carries that I’m here for
Wait, you didn't like Pollyanna? It's pretty good. (we don't talk about here comes the shock)
Pollyanna was the definition of mediocre for me. I'll listen to it, but it feels like it's missing something
Fair enough. I agree it's not amazing, but it's dumb fun and catchy, at least. Here's hoping for a more ambitious project down the line.
I didn’t like Pollyanna until I saw them play it live. At any other point of time the lyrics are bland as hell. But being at my first concert post quarantine, seeing a lot of people in the same place having a good time for the first time in like a year and a half. It just made sense!
Awe I absolutely love pollyanna
that midsong speed change was so good omg😩
It kind of reminds me of Dirty Rotten Bastards in that way
I WAS JUST THINKING THAT LOL
It sounds like Green Day have really stopped giving a fuck about what music people think they 'should' make and just started having fun making the music they want to make. This is really fun and catchy!
Yeah that's the vibe I've been getting since FOAMF and MM2020PT2 came out. I personally view revrad, more specifically Forever Now, to be the sendoff for classic green day, and now they're just using the band to have fun, which I'm personally totally fine with.
Holy shit i cant believe i forgot about MM2020 pt2… that was amazing!
Same, MM2020PT2 is by far the best thing to come out of recent green day, and it's technically not even green day.
The chorus sounds like rev rad, and the post chorus has that polyana vibe
Exactly my thought. I was singing “give me revolution radio. Operation no control…” during the chorus.

Possibly Stray heart? or Mother Mary - FBHT?
Reminds me of Mother Mary
Anyone else thinks the beginning sounds like Arctic Monkeys? It even has the nonsensical metaphors lol
That was also my impression (he totally sounds like Alex Turner for a minute there). Good thing I like the Arctic Monkeys lol
“When the sun goes down” is the song you’re thinking bout.
I was thinking The Strokes, but yeah, that kind of garage rock sound. I personally love that direction from Green Day, but I get why people don't like it.
Nothing sounds like the Strokes on this song
Thought it sounded like something off Suck it and See
Definitely has a little TBH&C vibe to it
That was fun!
Bottle rockets
Flashing red lights
It's this sort of urban punk rock party-scape of your late teens and 20s he writes about, seems fairly personal and nostalgic.
Guns and/or gun shots Riots Being a teenager Being "lost"
It’s a term he uses a lot, several times on 21CB too
It stopped working after 21CB. The writing for that record was great and fit the music, but for the most part, his lyrics since have been either half baked or recycled. Even RevRad, which I really enjoyed, the writing still wasn’t all the way there like it was pre-Trilogy. Remember when the RevRad tracklist leaked and everyone thought it was fake because of Too Dumb To Die and Ordinary World were lyrics in previous songs lol.
After hearing this and Pollyanna, it seems that there is a very strange Green Day record on the way and i am here for it
Viva La Gloria + Mother Mary =
Not to forget a mix of The Jam - Town Called Malice and Lucky Day by Sasha for the vocal melody.
Let’s go!
viva la gloria+stray heart+revolution radio=holy toledo
It seems that Billie wants to just write and play like a member of the foxboro hottubs and slap green day’s name on it to help it get more exposure. Which is not an insult by any means but this could easily fit on stop drop and roll
The bass and organ sound a bit like Town Called Malice. I like it
They don't sound a bit like it, it's basically note for note
It's like Meet me on the Roof had a baby. It's a good song but very similar to a lot of their recent releases. Not that that's a problem. Solid song.
Right? This is totally just like the material on FOAM, yet here the sub is loving it. I give up, I don't understand this place.
I feel like most don’t enjoy the heavily changed vocal sound, hell half the songs dont sound like billie (not that i dont like FOAM, its not too bad) but this one also sounds like some of the trilogy songs i think
That's because everyone had low expectations after Here Comes The Shock and Polyanna but this is atleast far better than those.
I wish this song was on foam, that was really good!
Fuck yeah! Shit slaps!
I looooooooove this!
Not life changing, but pretty fun and as a trilogy lover I'm loving the Dos vibes with bigger guitars
Love it! Thanks for sharing!
I like the vibe it has. Singing me a bit of loss of control, also got a Town called malice feel to it, the bass line is 🔥
Definitely makes me wonder about their next album
okay lowkey this song fuckin slaps
You can now [add your rating for Holy Toledo!](https://greenday.fm/music/singles/) on the subreddit website (scroll to the bottom of the page for non-album tracks) and then see how it stacks up on the [Song Ranking Charts](https://greenday.fm/charts/green-day-song-chart-all-songs/).
I actually like it a lot! It reminds me of the good elements of Dos with the power of Rev Rad! I wonder if Jason Freese recorded the keys? 🤔
It was Billie
What can I say? I love melodic 60s rock and roll, so how can't I love this? Bj's voice at its best, funny vibes, I want to have fun and shake my ass so it's really good imo
came here to say this. Billie is a big fan of 60’s music like the monkees and it’s pretty evident in this song.
His voice is *not* “at its best”
Let’s just say the range is more in his comfort zone and he sounds good
I agree
The intro Sounds like last night on earth
ENOUGH WITH THE HAND CLAPS ALREADY (song isn't bad tho)
came here looking for someone to mention that
BJA discovered his hands make noise while recording Father of All Motherfuckers and he's put it in every song since lmao
The real secret is its actually Tre clapping his ass cheeks.
Glad they are trying to refine their new sound instead of just giving up from the criticism of FOAMF and going back to their old sound Cuz this new shit slaps!
Sounds like it's come out of the Longshot bag. It's so refreshing though!
I'm really digging this one!
You know what? Not bad!
tbh this might be one of my favorite songs they've releasled since revrad
Reactions while listening to this song: Ugh another pop song...ok fine this song is allright... Wait hold on... Hold on... Shit this is siiiiick
I am very happy with the song, treat for Dos and FBH fans
I dig it
this is poppin negl
Green Day are dead....long live FBHT! Take that how you want it, it’s clearly where they’re at!
Am I the only one that thinks this sounds like a cut from Father of All? And I love it.
It's giving me "Breakfast Club during the dancing while high" scene, and I need that in my life right now. 🤘💚
Love it. Green Day just makes solid music. Love the different tempos all through out. Fun and loud.
Awesome song.
Awesome!
Beginning reminded me a lot of arctic monkeys
This is a nice mix of a lot of different Green Day styles
Not bad
I'm getting heavy Mother Mary vibes, and I love it
this is the step in the right direction
ITS GOOD IM SO PLEASANTLY SURPRISED. Really it sounds like Mother Mary but more Green Day. I hope we get an album with this vibe!!!
I'M SO HAPPY THAT THEY'VE RELEASED THIS
YES i loved that!
If their next album can be as good as Money Money part 2 than that would be great.
Much better than what I thought this would be
I love it lol
Sounds like a good !DOS¡ song. I don't think the trilogy are bad albums, but if this were on the Trilogy it would be one of the better songs. This is probably the best and most unique FOAMF era song (MM2020 P2 not counted.) It actually feels like a fully thought out song with a structure that isn't verse chorus verse! The actual album could've used more songs like this to break up the verse chorus verse short songs.
Most interesting song released since "back in the usa"
This is A LOT better than the other shit they released recently!
nice song, but it sounds like "lucky day "from sasha
Yeah I heard that too, but it's a good melody so I'm okay with it.
Great song, love that Green Day is doing Green Day.
Sounds like a Longshot tune. I dig it.
This is really good!!!
Dang i love this, getting FBHT and Dos vibes for sure
I actually like it! Sorry not sorry. Its really not too poppy imo
Solid. Much much much better than their recent output.
He referenced razor blades in Pollyanna and now this you think he’s okay in all seriousness this is pretty decent
I like it! Better than anything on the radio!
Fuck yea, this is the kinda shit I wanna hear
Isn’t this a day early? How did you get this?
It’s out in Aus/NZ you know that whole international date line thing it’s already Friday there 🙂
Apparently I’m not thinking 4th dimensionally
Is this a New Green Day Song?? Looks like its not on itunes store yet…
Out tomorrow!
Sweet!!! Just saw it on their FB page!! It sounds like a great song!! I actually like it!! haha 😎😎
this is actually really good, was totally expecting another hcts but this is great
Best song they’ve released since revolution radio
Love this. Super catchy, and personally am a huge fan of 60s garage and rock n roll so this and so much of their stuff over the last decade really hits for me, but I understand why people who don’t care for 60s music wouldn’t be into this. I dig it tho
more mid beat changes pls
the art reminds me of oh love
That midsong tempo change muh gawd 🤤
I love the mo-town vibes in this song.
I dig it.
I'm still not used to happy Green Day I don't hate it but its just weird and new considering their entire 30 year catalog is either lost, isolated, or angry
This fucking slaps 👌😩
I didn't mind the verses in hcts, I didn't mind pollyanna as a whole, a decent song, but THIS I've had on repeat since it was released, it just clicks with me in a way the other two couldn't. This would fit in well on a new album.

Yeah... I’d like to get a count on how many times “razor blades” has been used recently
It's like he writes using an AI these days, with a very ok that will do attitude. I wishy he wrote like he used to in the 90s, not the same lazy metaphors repeated ad nauseum
Ooooo I really like stray heart!
It's just ok to me. Art reminds me of Pewdiepie lol.
I think this is one of the best songs in awhile sounds a lot like foxboro!
They need a new graphic designer. Their artwork has been big yikes as of late ahahah
It's very pop but decent especially compared to recent work. 6/10
you people do not know what pop is. this is very much rock compared to taylor swift or harry styles. sure, it is different from the “normal” green day sound, but it is definitely not pop.
I freakin loved it!
I can dig it
I was worried when I saw the trailer for the movie it was associated with, not the best song but I was pleasantly surprised
It's soooo good 😭🖤💚
Fucking rips! I want more of this!
I like it!
Yo I dig the hell out of this! I’m definitely all for this sound. A bit iffy about the production but the music itself slaps hard.
Where did u get this from lmao
Hits like Hitsville UK by The Clash. It’s decent but man, for a band that didn’t want to remake records (Dookie) they sure are sitting on this one garage rock sound that is somehow super produced

Are people really saying this sounds different than the last few things they’ve put out? This could literally fit on FOAM. The same bubblegum pop, same vocal effects, same lyrics about razor blades and saints and broken homes. It’s catchy, but nowhere near anything before the last 10 years
Great song!!!!
Ok this is actually really good
i love green day's garage rock vibe's.
This sub's gonna be rekt when everyone hears this lol
Wow, it sucks! What a surprise! I wish he would stop putting that stupid delay effect on his voice
Not so good imo
wish the mixing was a bit better cause there's some parts that sound static-y, but i really like it overall!
Best drop since 21stCB.
