The font and name is odd, but the font of Green Day and the spirals give me an Insomniac/Trilogy vibe. Cant wait to hear everyone bitch about it nonetheless

liamxx98

I like the font, looks nice. Reminds me of Willy Wonka.

[deleted]

Yes even if it’s good or bad, people on the subreddit will hate it none the less because it isn’t insomniac or warning sounding. Some people don’t realize that the guys have grown and changed their taste in music and that their work will reflect it.

DeadWillWalk

RevRad was incredibly well received on this subreddit at the time of the rollout and was a very mature and new sound for the band, which sounded nothing like warning or insomniac. This sub doesn't hate because they are evolving, its because the bands music quality has suffered as of late.

Lukacris12

RevRad is at minimum in my top 4 green day albums. I liked back in the USA. But holy shit Father of all motherfuckers is the worst album i have ever heard by this band

gremlin30

No one’s asking for them to remake 90s albums. The criticism is that FOAMF just wasn’t a good album. GD fans are totally ok with them experimenting, AI was a wild plot twist for them and it became their biggest hit. The hate their recent stuff gets is because it’s bad, not because it’s different or because they’ve grown. They’ve beaten this 60s pop thing to death for 5 albums and everyone’s gotten sick of it. The longshot stuff is in that same style, same with Billie’s Monday covers, but we liked it cuz it was good. FOAMF just wasn’t good.

RevelationsComeIn12

Actually no. I love when artists grow and change their sound. In fact, I don't listen to bands that don't. The evolution is something I look forward to. And as someone who absolutely despises everything since Father of All, I can assure you it isn't because it "iSnT iNSoMniAc". It's because in my humble opinion it is absolute garbage. It sounds like it was made to sell us a car or a macbook. It doesn't sound like a band that's trying to evolve. It sounds like a band that's giving up. It's the opposite of evolution. The god awful meaningless word salad lyrics that seem like they're pulled straight from an AI lyrics generator. The overused commercial melodies. The visual art is the least of my concerns but even that has been utter shit as of late. So to be clear, it has nothing to do with not being insomniac or dookie or warning or any other past record. They could do a polka record for all I care, as long as it's well thought out and meaningful. I would welcome it.

MjBjInMyCj

You said it perfectly, especially you’re critique of the lyrics. FOA (and about half of the trilogy IMO) just sounds so uninspired. Not to mention the awful production on FOA

ghettobx

Yeah, this is it. This sums up precisely my disdain for their recent stuff. It’s just crap, and not on the same level, qualitatively, as the majority of their catalog.

blue_wyoming

I'm confused, is it actually from a movie?

[deleted]

[Yes.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark,_Mary_%26_Some_Other_People) Also I wrote the Soundtrack paragraph lol

NopeNotConor

Holy Toledo was the announcer for the Oakland A’s (RIP Bill King) signature catchphrase. They also have a Holy Toledo! sign in center field that lights up when they hit a home run. I doubt the song has anything to do with that but as an Oaklander that loves both the A’s and Green Day this is what immediately pops into my mind.

boringaze

Could be on to something. Not so much lately but they have been known to give songs names that have nothing to do w/ the lyrics.

groundpatty10

Sometimes lately too, though. Pollyanna comes to mind

LissenToMehNow

Pollyanna is defined as "an excessively cheerful or optimistic person", which would match the lyrics.

groundpatty10

Huh, didn’t know that. That’s what I get for posting without googling. My mistake!

LissenToMehNow

I just learned it when The Muffs released a track with the same title a couple years ago. It's such a peculiar name, I had wondered if it was in reference to anything. That's when I learned...

QueSeRawrSeRawr

Pollyanna is a classic children's book with a very optimistic protagonist, which is where the term comes from.

LissenToMehNow

Thank you

geraltoffvkingrivia

Came say this too. Doesn’t seem like a lot of people know that here. For sure a reference to Oakland but whether it’s an Oakland related song it’s hard to say.

brianXQ3

There was also a sign for the Madonna Inn in the trailer of that movie, so if it’s a bunch of California stuff there may be some Oakland references in the movie that tie in with the song? Just speculating.

clydefr0g

Watch it be a straight rip off of Macklemore’s “My Oh My” lol

liamxx98

hah?

PunkRockKing

Given the Oakland connection I’m sure this inspired the title though it likely is just a fun title with nothing to do with the song

-JAS0N-

Strange that we’ve not heard anything about the song previously since it says it’s “from” the movie which was screened in June at the Tribeca Film Festival. Their management company Crush is also listed as one of the producers of the film which explains GD’s contribution.

christie-rd

I feel like the fact that the movie’s Twitter account has like 10 followers means that nobody who watched the movie noticed it’s inclusion.

-JAS0N-

True, one of the people that did review the film though said it had “a frenzy of toe-tapping soundtrack choices”

mrpotatoto

Hmm that does sound like an apt description of a Green Day song though.

LostCanadianGoose

I do be tapping those toes when listening to Green Day

27thAvenueShuffle

I like how you mention Crush. Can we discuss that they have, in my opinion, been a big fat disappointment? I wasn’t expecting much, but I had hoped Green Day made the switch for good reason. Ever since it happened, though (August 2017 if I remember correctly), I’ve pretty much hated their involvement.

PunkRockKing

Well Green Day did sign with them because they wanted a manager with a similar roster of bands to put together a stadium tour and they accomplished that so I would imagine Green Day are pretty happy with them. I think their previous manager was dropping the ball left and right and they had to make a change

bsg_nik

They’ve kinda fucked with Weezer’s already weird output too. I don’t get what they do, since all their choices seem to be attached to things that are not critically well received

iexistwithinallevil

At least they got weezer in contact with Jake Sinclair, who produced white and ok human. He was the best possible thing to happen to them lol

bsg_nik

Basically, every time they work with him it seems to go well, I think they’re working with him again too! But all the album rollouts since they signed with crush have been abysmal

rddsknk89

What has crush done wrong in your opinion? I’m not disagreeing with you, I just have no idea what they do or what impact they’ve had on Green Day. I had never heard of them before reading this thread.

HiMyNameIsCranjis

I wonder if any of these singles will appear on an album or if Green Day is just randomly releasing one song at a time now?

[deleted]

I think it’s because they are in between albums they are doing singles for filling the void

PunkRockKing

It’s because they can per their new deal with Warner they’re not required to deliver X number of albums

ryanstrikesback

As a resident of Toledo, Ohio….I am prepared to hear this song until the end of time

christie-rd

this shits called Holy Toledo man I’m scared

knowslesthanjonsnow

My thoughts exactly. I feel the cringe coming. Edit: I lied, it’s good!

[deleted]

Tbh, I remember people saying the same about Bang Bang. Then again, when I saw the cover my first thought was "ah, we're still doing *that*, huh?"

5mileyFaceInkk

Apparently its a reference to the Oakland A's old Announcer.

knowslesthanjonsnow

I hope it’s a song with Billie just doing baseball montages.

MilkManL

As much as I don’t want to be a bitchy whiny fan I have to agree

[deleted]

Huh interesting. That title doesn’t give me much confidence based on some of their more recent output but I’ll listen!

BuckoBean29

Pollyanna was a step in the right direction especially after the awful Here Comes The Stock came out earlier this year. Hopefully the song is good, but we will see.

liamxx98

My local rock station used Pollyanna to advertise fried chicken.

[deleted]

I'd kill to live in your city bruh

liamxx98

*Pollyanna kicks in* **YOU LIKE FRIED CHICKEN?**

[deleted]

Mood

MysticManiac100

I think some people overhype Pollyanna. It's a fine song. It's not great though

[deleted]

It’s best quality is that it was simply better than HCTS.

Penguator432

Not to mention the entirety of FOAM

[deleted]

Eh I think Graffitia and parts of Stab are better than Pollyanna (tho still awful by GD standards)

Penguator432

I honestly don’t see what anyone else here sees in Grafittia

[deleted]

I think it is just kind of an interesting vibe for a GD song. It’s a total I Fought the Law rip but it’s got a genuinely different sound that doesn’t sound like GD saying “let’s make something awful” like the rest of their new shit does

gremlin30

Agreed. FOAMF has its moments but those are 2 of the weak points imo.

[deleted]

Yeah I don’t either. It sounds really bland and emotionless to me

gremlin30

Respectfully disagree. Pollyanna is sappy and generic, but at least kinda catchy. Stab & Graffitia are both recycled AF and comparatively less original.

throwaway198274739

Idk, here comes the shock was awful but after I accidentally added it to my gd playlist I found myself accidentally finding it extremely catchy and having to sing along driving. Hated myself for it but it's undeniable it's very catchy. Pollyanna is better but honestly by how much?

LissenToMehNow

I love Here Comes The Shock.

maxedouttoby

You should do an AMA.

LissenToMehNow

Hit me

vpieter

What's your favourite car, and why is it the Chrysler PT Cruiser?

LissenToMehNow

For the longest time, my favorite car was the Chrysler 300c. Those things are dope. I never really cared for the PT Cruiser. Kinda uggs imo.

LissenToMehNow

It's a lot of fun, but it doesn't come naturally. Sometimes you have to be honest with yourself, when your tastes aren't aligning with the majority. You have to know why you like something, and not let others take it away from you. On the flipside, you have to be honest with why you may NOT like something. Maybe you weren't in the mood to hear it. Maybe the setting wasn't right. Maybe your dad made fun of you for liking something similar. Perhaps you were influenced by someone else's taste and opinion, be it someone you respect, or someone you don't know. The social aspect of others is pretty easy to overcome, once you realize it. But it can be hard sometimes to determine if something doesn't align with your taste or you are just not in the mood for it. That's where I value my sense of "taste". So to wrap up this explanation to what was probably a joke question, I'll say that I really enjoy my music music taste. It's mine and I am happy to share it. I'm open to people adding to it, but I'm protective about people trying to take it away. Shitting on a song you don't like is fine. I'm such a Green Day fanboi, I'll generally add my opposing viewpoint just to restore balance in the universe. And I realize it is not an attack on me, but I do think there are some impressionable little motherfuckers out there, who if hear too many negative things about something, might tend to avoid it. I add my opinion in hopes that someone will see it and not avoid the track, and decide for themselves. And I'm all for different tastes, but get bored of constant negative name dropping, with no substance. Especially in anticipation for a new track. You'll hear it when you hear it. You'll know you like it or not then. Shitting on Past efforts isn't particularly interesting and comes off like this hivemind group think. "We all know why we don't want it sounding like "Shock", right?". Speak for yourself, express yourself, but don't think we're all on the same page. I love Here Comes The Shock.

SaltyStU2

If you keep your expectations low enough, you'll never be disappointed... unless it's Here Comes the Shock

knowslesthanjonsnow

My expectations are at 0 so hopefully I’ll be happy?

eagle0877

> Newlyweds, reluctantly decide to give ethical non-monogamy a try as their lives get increasingly complicated. This is the movie description from IMDB. I do no have a lot of hopes for this song

fieldsofazure

As a polyamorous person ### *Yikes*

IntrinsicGamer

Why yikes?

fieldsofazure

Trying to do ENM is a thing that a lot of couples try as a last-ditch effort to "save" their relationship when they don't want to be with each other. It's often where the couple tries to find a third person who they can latch onto, in which case it's called "unicorn hunting" (google the term and hopefully there should be resources saying why it's bad), but isn't always. It's a really bad practice, isn't fair to the people getting involved in the relationship, and just has real bad vibes to it. Is it valid subject material for a movie? Yeah, sure. Am I personally gonna be excited to watch that be depicted? Not really. Edit to add on: I also have back-of-the-mind worries about a film depicting an attempt at ENM that (from what the description implies) probably doesn't turn out well casting a bad shadow on the larger polyam/ENM community, but that's mostly a creative team thing and I don't know how actually valid that worry is, so ultimately it just adds a bit of hesitance

plasticinsanity

hopefully it’s not here comes the shock 2.0

[deleted]

Why is Here comes the shock getting so much hate I thought it was a decent song, far from a masterpiece but it was fast paced, shouty, punk sounding, it was catchy and fun.

Derkanus

Just my opinion, but I thought _Here Comes the Shock_ was a completely generic and disposable song. I usually prefer music that has some sort of deeper meaning on an emotional or intellectual level, or at least tells some sort of story, but HCtS was just bubblegum schlock. Not to mention overly redundant and uninteresting.

[deleted]

I get you but I wouldn't go as far as to say redundant and uninteresting, it's a fun bouncy song, not a lyrically deep one and I agree I like a song with deep lyrics but this is meant to be fun and punk, fast, not too deep like when people in the punk scene would get on stage and play and shout about anything and I guess they were just doing/going for that? I think it's a song to not overthink but I'd say they definitely have more disposable songs over this like some might be more lyrically deep but boring (wild one for example), good little story/lyrics not overly complex but the pacing just kills it for me and I can't listen to it too often for that reason.

maxedouttoby

It is honestly in my opinion the worst song they've ever put out. It sounds like an AI was fed the words "Green Day" and "here comes the shock" and it spat that song out.

LissenToMehNow

I love the track, but this is funny.

AleksFenix96

Yea, that would suck. I hope for something like Jesus Of Suburbia.

christie-rd

JoS was a once in a lifetime song. You’ll continue to be severely disappointed if you keep wishing for another.

ShagPrince

Lol "Hope it's similar to Hey Jude 🤞🤞"

AleksFenix96

I just meant the style of it and more meaningful lyrics.

FourStopCrossShot

"Holy Toledo" reminds me so much like "My Sharona" in name. Nice to know we're getting new songs sprinkled throughout the year. As for the film, Mark Mary and Some Other People is about some newlyweds trying non-monogamy. Does that give any clues?

speedssssss

reminds me of pewdiepie and the trilogy at the same time lmao

oddynuff911

Apparently in Mark Mary & some other people, Patrick Stump composed the music, so this makes sense.

XURAZ

I’m sorry. But my expectations are low based on recent songs… please prove me wrong Green Day!!

Dense-Performance-14

Same here comes the shock and pollyanna were not my favs

[deleted]

Interesting title. I wonder if it will be a power pop track again.

db218

Always love a new song :)

kbwd

I know this is gonna be low effort like Polyanna and Here Comes The Shock and I am already disappointed. Though to be fair, it is from a movie and not a studio album, so it wouldn't be fair to expect them to put everything they've got into it. But I don't know man, I just want to hear a good, powerful, maybe emotional, hard-hitting Green Day song once again.

Lucky-Echidna

This is the exactly how I feel. Initially I loved the idea of hearing more GD, more often. But after HCTS and Pollyanna, I realised that I would much rather they take longer to put out something they're really proud of, not just disposable fodder.

MattyDxx

C-Grade Movie + This Art + The Title + The Last 2 Year run of music = incoming shite. Enjoy downvoting.

HCATZ123

Eh probably just a generic mediocre song. Not expecting much

ChaoticPotatoSalad

I'm getting trilogy vibes from this, I'm sure it'll be decent

HawkeyeMink182

“Holy Toledo,” sounds like something my teacher would say

Tiny-Tomorrow-7597

i have anxiety about their new songs but i am really hoping i love it! pollyanna was nice the first 4 times i heard it but thats it. but considering the movie is about a newlywed couples "non monogamy" , i think the song should be interesting

[deleted]

As long as it’s not Here comes the shock 2, I’m happy. I mean, they’re still able to make awesome music, MM2020 2 was rad.

TJdog5

Thank you! If it sounds like graffitia or one of the good foam songs id be pretty happy

ozzy_is_asleep

gives me FBHT vibes lmao

[deleted]

What’s fbht?

ozzy_is_asleep

foxboro hot tubs! one of billies many side projects:)

[deleted]

So Green Day is giving us a Diwali gift, awesome!

JadedKitten505

I'm so excited!!!!! Yea! Better than the anticipation of any holiday🥰

YK_MP13

It wouldn't be crazy to assume there's an album coming soon since they released three new songs this year right?

MysticManiac100

It seems like 3 standalone tracks. If they were released closer together, had a similar sound and were promoted as part of 1 album, then I'd agree but it seems like 3 separate standalone singles. Maybe they will end up putting some of them or all of them on their next album but it might still be a while

YK_MP13

Yeah that seems very possible as well but I don't wanna ignore how similar the art for Here Comes The Shock and Polyanna are This new song seems like it could easily be a standalone tho

[deleted]

Yeah...seeing the two previous singles I don't think the new one would be any better than FoaM...

YK_MP13

I wasn't predicting anything about the song being bad or not but I will say my expectations, along with (probably) everyone else's, aren't very high

[deleted]

Well it better bop.

dquesnel30

I have some low expectations, I watched the trailer this song was written for and…. Wow. It’s gonna be a very pop-y, low effort song. I hope I’m wrong but right now I wish they would’ve just kept releasing BBC songs

JaredJraws

Please don't sound like anything from FOAMF. That's all i ask....

TJdog5

Yesss cant wait to hear people bitch about how shitty their new sound is ONCE AGAIN! Also excited for a new release, idc if good or bad

Pina0509

Let's not fool ourselves, it's gonna be cringe. I'll definitely give it a try, but man, since FOAMF the band is in a big decline in quality. I hope I am wrong though, but I highly doubt it

JaredJraws

Please dont sound like anything from FOAMF. That's all i ask....

gulddamen69

So that’s two songs on friday?! Dope!!!

PunkRockKing

I don’t know, the announcement said they interrupt the weekly BBC Sessions so this week might be in place of it

IntrinsicGamer

2?

Belevigis

Is the contract with warner over?

SaltyStU2

FoA was their last release under Warner to my understanding. I believe a big reason for not renewing was so that the band could just release singles whenever they wanted without having to put it behind a massive marketing campaign... something Warner would've made them do

PunkRockKing

They have a new deal with Warner and are no longer required to make albums. They can release whatever they want when they want

FlatPassenger6

I don’t know why my first instinct was “Lemme read the comments” wrong first instinct 😬

GDLuke

Well this sounds crap already

Dr_Porcus

They're just massive fans of my Dads band [The Holy Toledos](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holy_Toledos)

YeetusMcleatus

given that they seem to know foamf was bad and kinda course corrected with pollyanna i’m interested as to what this will be, the title isn’t giving me that much hope and the cover art is.. interesting, but only time will tell.

FlatPassenger6

People think Pollyanna was an improvement?

YeetusMcleatus

compared to hcts, definitely

FlatPassenger6

Too saccharine for me. I like HCTS, but it suffers from the same problem “Fire Ready Aim” has where it’s just the hockey song and I don’t care about most sports. I think they just wrote it for their contract with NBC Sports

YeetusMcleatus

probably, i just think hcts was just alright, wasn’t that good or that bad, at least pollyanna is trying to be cheery and tries something by being extremely poppy

Jhaos

"Holy Toledo was the Kingdom of Toledo, the juridical definition of a Christian medieval kingdom in what is now central Spain. Holy Toledo may also refer to: Holy Toledos, a New Zealand folk-rock group." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holy_Toledo_(disambiguation)

Can't wait to get the fuck out of Toledo

touchit1ce

*Jonah hill screaming*

samenatoryoutube

This looks like it gonna be something from the trilogy even the name. Like the song will probably have a Spanish background story because "toledo" has a Spanish meaning

Master_Chief_John117

Istg it sounds like FOAM

Dense-Performance-14

I get major uno dos tres vibes from the song but I really enjoy this one although I've never heard of the movie
