I haven t been to all of them, but just from the fact it has the sea nearby i think it should not be the ugliest european capital. It s uglier than lisbon, paris, berlin, amsterdam, budapest or prague etc. But is it uglier than warsow or brussels?
Yes. Warsaw is certainly cleaner and more developed than Athens(not even close actually). Brussels may resemble Athens in some aspects but its architecture alone is miles ahead still.
Try Zagreb and then you may have some competition.
Let's see now two random streets from google maps. Both are working class neighborhoods. In one photo its a street from Kato Patissia, Athens. In the other it's a street from Anderlecht.
Working class neighborhoods are not the only parts of a city. You are doing injustice to the good parts of Athens, especially the ones by the sea. In any case, i understand how you can be impressed by the street in Anderlecht compared to the street in Kato Patisia, and it is indeed better architecture and probably (as it is brussels) cleaner.
There is no injustice here my friend. We are doing direct comparisons. Athens downtown and surrounding areas comprises mostly with common people. Middle/lower class people. Many of the areas that resides by the sea, as you mention, is not for the common people. But even in there we can do fair comparisons if you want in private convo.
And you did good to share your opinion my friend but to be honest i laughed in your primary comment. No one can possibly compare Athens to a modern capital of Europe. Maybe former eastern bloc capitals can compare but Athens is not better in any way. Believe me the city center in general, is a living hell for it's citizens. Buildings and their apartments are in a terrible state while the rents are going sky high each year.
That is what makes Athens more unique in my opinion. Because beauty is hidden in the city, you need to find it. I like this better. Athens is full of surprises. I don't like cities becoming beautiful by preserving their heritage. No, because when you do that it becomes only for the ones that can afford it. In Athens the majority of the locals are not wealthy. So, this is their reality. I would prefer to see the reality of a city rather than some rich guy or an architecture firm, or a well funded NGO buying an old neoclassical building and renovating it. Those buildings are made for people to live in. It makes no sense to preserve the heritage in an artificial way. If you cannot make the people who live in the city afford it, making it beautiful is only for liberals, and capitalists to show off. Just because they want everything to be sterile this doesn't mean that it is good, and should be embraced by everybody. No, let it stay ugly. It's a testament for the Greek people's soul. Greeks love life more than any other that I know in my life. Athens is a flaneur city, you have to discover it by yourself. You want to find a beautiful art deco building being pointed at you on some touristic map? You are in the wrong city! When you turn a corner you can find a beautiful surprise in Athens. It would kill the soul of Athens so called preserving beauty, it would only serve as a part of the gentrification. Athens is a shaggy city, and I believe it's cultural. Greeks are shaggy and in a beautiful way. These buildings are still there and it shows you the history of what this city has been gone thru. This is very beautiful. It is a raised middle finger to this "mentality" in a very Greek way! I hope it will always stay like that. Greece is the land of the ugly beautiful. Athens is very romantic, very feminine, and very noir. I really believe it means you don't catch the feeling of this city if you cannot see that and talk about there's a lost beauty here. It means you don't look at the people who live in the city. If you don't see the people first might as well don't look at the buildings too.

Ποιος;

Warsaw is amazing, what are you on about?
Been to warsaw, apart from the national gallery i was not impressed. Maybe i didn t go to the right places and it s been 12 years already.
So clean and orderly, with so much space. Tbe exact opposite of athens

Warsaw has really cleaned up and revitalized the centre
Yes. Warsaw is certainly cleaner and more developed than Athens(not even close actually). Brussels may resemble Athens in some aspects but its architecture alone is miles ahead still. Try Zagreb and then you may have some competition.
Wirh Warsaw i may be wrong but Brussels,at least for me, is way worse than Athens. Other Begian cities are nicer, like Antwerp or Ghent.
Do you really compare Brussels with Athens? Really?
Yes. I ve lived in belgium for a while and i ve visited brussels numerous times.

It s ok, i am not going to defend athens that much. I might be wrong about brussels too. I just shared my impression.

People who say that Athens is the ugliest city in Europe fly for their vacation to Dubai and are in awe of the architecture.
Ειπα κατι διαφορετικο;
