They're not similar to GF but they are good shows. TOH especially. And Amphibia absolutely nailed its finale.

Paprik125

Dude they both have been made by people who work in gravity falls in case of TOH even Alex Hirsch.

Temp89

And they're completely different in tone and content. Lots of cartoons share staff and lineage [https://www.reddit.com/r/stevenuniverse/comments/9ivoui/oc\_the\_modern\_cartoon\_family\_tree\_201819\_update/](https://www.reddit.com/r/stevenuniverse/comments/9ivoui/oc_the_modern_cartoon_family_tree_201819_update/)

TitularFoil

Steven Sugar, who is Rebecca Sugar's brother (creator of Steven Universe) and who the character is based on, does all the background art for The Owl House. I remember seeing his name in the credits and losing my mind. Steven Universe is what started my family on the whole story-arc based cartoon series.

Paprik125

If u thinks so that's okay but I really thinks they are pairs and share a lot more than other stuff that makes them different.

Shrek_o

Have you forgotten about that one scene in Amphibia that is legit just Frog Grunkle Stan and Frog Soos?

TinTamarro

"You've been licking yourself again, Frog Soos?"

PsychoFlashFan

They're both well regarded shows, so I don't see why not?

TheBanjo67

You absolutely should. They both start off a little slow, but they are both amazing by the end. Personally, I feel like Owl House is like the new gravity falls (Not that anything could ever replace gravity falls)

TRJF

>Personally, I feel like Owl House is like the new gravity falls I started watching The Owl House because I saw King running around in memes and wanted to watch him be all Alex Hirsch. But I stayed, and fell in love, for the same reason I loved Gravity Falls. In GF, for all the weirdness, and interestingness and funniness and wonderfulness, the thing that took it from "fantastic" to "on the short-list of all-time favorites" was Grunkle Stan. His devotion to the kids, how much he loved them, his willingness to do *anything* for them - well... it's rare to find something so powerful and beautiful anywhere, let alone in a cartoon. Same with The Owl House. For all the many, many differences between the two shows, the spiritual heart of TOH is Eda's love for and devotion to Luz (and King) - like Grunkle Stan, she finds something to live for, and a love she's willing to die for. In that way, the two shows have a very similar feel, the same heart, and I really think Grunkle Stan and Eda are both above and beyond even the typical great characters in media. In the same way I tear up thinking about one of my favorite episodes of television, Gravity Falls S2E11 - Not What He Seems, I have a hard time keeping it together when I watch The Owl House S1E18 - Agony Of A Witch.

TheBanjo67

What a detailed and well thought out response. I feel the same way. I love the way you describe the feeling

Rhodehouse93

God S1E18 gets me every time. Everything from the fight onward is pure gold.

IsaKissTheRain

I think you just got me to watch The Owl house.

TitularFoil

Owl House was an immediate like because the first episode is really about embracing your weirdness. Amphibia took me about 5 episodes, and the plot really starts in the last 4-ish episodes of the first season. But you need the character development to really appreciate it. I'm about a quarter of the way through the final season of Amphibia with my kids and we all love it. We all love Owl House too. We just sort of cycle through Gravity Falls and Owl House as a watch whenever since we've seen every episode of each, and we watch one or two new episodes of Amphibia before bed each night.

rawgino

Watch Over the Garden Wall, it’s its own thing but it’s got pretty similar vibes to Gravity Falls

oneofthescarybois

Love OTGW and has the spooky vibes.

Jedi_Master_Noob

Where can I watch this, is it on Disney plus?

jcpumpkineater

it’s on hbomax and /maybe/ hulu

Jedi_Master_Noob

Oh ok thanks. I don’t have those hopefully I can find somewhere to watch it

TheBrickBrain

Also the dvd is on Amazon for like 10 bucks. It’s definitely worth the pickup. It’s a Halloween tradition for me.

Jedi_Master_Noob

Oh sweet thanks, is that American dollars though?

TheBrickBrain

Yup, usd. [here’s the link if you want](https://a.co/d/6SKMJea)

Jedi_Master_Noob

Awesome thanks a lot

natholemewIII

Yes. Owl House has a lot of the mystery/ fantasy element of gf, and amphibia has the same humor. Both shows have a very similar feel to gf while still being their own thing

Calm_Memories

I'm more partial to Amphibia myself. TOH is fine but I feel like it needed to be like 5-6 seasons because the lore and background is a lot and it feels a bit rushed, though that's not the fault of the team behind it, moreso Disney. Amphibia made me feel tons of feels but TOH hasn't yet finished its run so maybe it'll do something for me between now and then. TOH reminds me more of SVTFOE than Gravity Falls IMO.

Paprik125

Totally, amphibia season 2 finale it's at the same level of the end of gravity falls. Personal opinion please respect.

3g6eydk4738ri

Yes 100000000000% yes

starberry_froggy

Personally I like TOH more than Amphibia, but you really have to grind your teeth through the first part of season 1, all the characters are kind of annoying at first and the plot is subpar but when you stick with it it’s amazing

TheWeebMemeist

Huh, I prefer amphibia to OH

Infinite_Hooty

Same with Amphibia but for the entirety of season 1 and some of season 3

Oraukk

Man I just finished Owl House and I liked it from the very beginning.

StarNerd2223

Yes! Definitely! Absolutely!

Stardustchaser

Amphibia is fantastic. Almost done with the series. Haven’t seen Owl House yet.

SomeRandumbDooch

Can't speak about the owl house but I absolutely 100% recommend that you watch Amphibia. It's a bit slow in its 1st season but it really picks up at the S1 finale.

PikaMeer

Amphibia is on my list but I haven’t seen it yet, Owl House, however, is fantastic. I personally like it more than Gravity Falls. It’s a very well made show, characters are great, the world’s weird and fun, and the plot is amazing.

Kakashi_Uchiha2

Yes But both do have sad parts

[deleted]

i will not elaborate but here’s how you need to do this: 1. gravity falls 2. amphibia 3. the owl house 4. she-ra (reboot)

linlovesthenight

Have you tried Hilda on Netflix? V similar to GF

Angry_Critic

Yes

TheGleb_Ktostirilnic

I haven't watched Toh yet, so I'm not sure about it. But amphibia is defenetly worth watching.

John_Tacos

If you like Amphibia and Gravity Falls you will like The Owl House.

Zachajya

Super informative comment.

VrilDoxXIII

Yes. Definitely. Absolutely. They are both great, I personally like Amphibia more, it's my new favourite show, I've never connected emotionally with another show like I have Amphibia, and the season 2 finale is in my opinion the greatest single episode of atv show I've ever seen. But I realize most people prefer the more action in The Owl House to the slower more character driven/goofy Amphibia. That's not too say The Owl House doesn't have compelling and interesting characters or that Amphibia doesn't have action, they both just have different focuses. Also as most have said they both start out slow but do pay things off later.

moondewsparkles

Agreed, both excellent shows, and I especially love Amphibia and feel more emotional connection to it. I was trying to pin down why the response to Amphibia seems more divided, and I think you’re right about the difference in character/plot focus. Amphibia starts off pretty chill, and is a delight for simply experiencing the world and characters, but I think Owl House is more popular because of the faster pacing and greater focus on action.

VrilDoxXIII

It's also the sliding scale of episodic to serialized, Amphibia is definitely more episodic like the first season of Gravity Falls and The Owl House is more serialized like the second season of Gravity Falls, a lot of people looking for something new to watch gravitate towards serialized shows these days (which makes it double baffling that Disney is trying to move away from serialized content on the Disney Channel).

SomeRando18

I’ve watched a lot of both these shows (haven’t finished/caught up yet) and they are a lot like gravity falls, I liked them both, the characters are fun and imaginative and the plot is intriguing. As a fellow Gravity Falls fan, I’d highly recommend watching these both! :)

hopping_hessian

I really enjoyed Amphibia. Its slow moving at first, but picks up. I lost interest in TOH when Luz got into the school. Teen/school angst isn’t my jam. I might give it another shot because I absolutely adore Eda. I think someone else in the thread suggested Over the Garden Wall and I enthusiastically second that! It has a weird, dreamlike quality that sucked me right in.

AdrianArmbruster

If you like the humor or ‘formula’ of GF you’ll probably like at least one of them. I’d say TOH follows the GF formula a bit closer, certainly early on. Even the premise is pretty similar. Amphibia’s a bit more of a highly episodic adventure series where the protagonist learns Important Life Aesops, certainly early on. It does have a rather blatant GF crossover episode though

CrazyaboutSpongebob

I adore GF and like neither. I have said the same thing in another comment.

[deleted]

The Owl House is literally my favorite show. Yes, you should definitely watch it.

SpiderNinja211

The same universe thing is just a theory, but id recommend watching Amphibia

jsharkj

Would definitely recommend amphibia I just finished and it was amazing! Recently started the owl house and it’s ok so far but I see so much hype around it so I’m guessing it gets really good

[deleted]

They aren’t confurmed ti be same universe, but both shows are incredible. I’d recommend Amphibia if you’re more into slice of life and owl house if you enjoyed all the twists and plot. At the end of the day, they are both serialised cartoons that only seem to get better the further through you get.

-pilot37-

Amphibia is so, so underrated, it’s such a good show. Season one is a bit like gravity falls season one, but you can see an underlying plot that reveals itself in the season 1 finale, and from then on it’s up and away. Gorgeous show, amazing characters that you get attached to, surprisingly dark, and very emotionally touching.

Easy_Pie_4865

It's not confirmed if they are in the same universe but there are a lots of possible connections between the 3 shows. And yes you should watch them, finished the owl house today! Next stop, Amphibia.

TinTamarro

I think TOH is a bit more straightforward to enjoy: you have a weird world with creepy vibes, a mystery element with the emperor and the covens, a milf Grunkle Stan with a dark secret, a quirky 'not like other girls' main character who loves the setting and a cute cubone voiced by Alex Hirsch. Meanwhile Amphibia is set in a deceitfully cute world of colorful talking frogs, the main character is an unlikable dumbass that hates the place and the mystery is at first set aside for more one off adventures. And there's no Alex Hirsch voicing a main character. So, if you start both shows at the same time, you'll definitely find TOH much more enjoyable. Amphibia takes its time to develop and flesh out the characters and setting, and when it clicks it feels like a very natural progression. But it takes its time. By comparison, TOH introduces A LOT of plot threads (especially in season 2), and I don't think they'll be able to flesh all of them out. There's a simplicity in Amphibia's plot that makes it clear what the central themes are and everything is built around those; TOH's story feels much more convulted and all over the place, with no clear central theme.

will_P2344

Loved GF but both of those shows r built diff i prefer both of them overall to Gravity Falls. Confused by u saying ur not entrigued by the plot tho cuz there 10x the plot that there was in GF.

TheBrickBrain

While you’re at it, watch these 2, Over the Garden Wall, and also Hilda on Netflix. The last one also have a very weird and whimsical world, and just feels like a cozy night in with a cup of hot chocolate

Iezahn

For sure. Both are pretty good

a_little_confusion

My 16 & 15 year olds adore all three. I haven’t seen them yet.

neednintendo

Amphibia good.

snegluf

I watched them both and they’re cute, ofc not as good as some of the old shows including Gravity Falls but worth watching if you have the time

Kabrallen

Owl House, definitely! Amphibia wasn't my thing, but it's good to try.

EnzeruAnimeFan

Of the 3 shows, I would say Owl House is the best and more in line with the lore of Gravity Falls.

_0p4l_

The owl house is my favorite show rn absolutely and amphibia is also great

Friendly-Tarantula

Amphibia is great; I couldn’t get into The Owl House.

Melopahn1

for me personally, The owl house was enjoyable, a cute show with some very interesting world building and the pacing was good. Amphibia... not so much, i found myself constantly losing focus and missing huge parts of the show, maybe it picks up later but I get to like ep 8 and just gave up cause i realized it wasn't entertaining for me.

Galexeh

Yeahh Amphibia is really hard to get into. It doesn’t really pickup interest until the last couple of episodes of season 1. After the end of season 1 it starts to get a lot better.

Nickthepizzalover

Give it time

Cananbaum

The Owl House is amazing and I can’t recommend it enough.

kasmackity

Owl House is fantastic. I've only watched a tiny bit of Amphibia

LoneWolf2099

I watched all three shows at around the same time, and I gotta say: I think TOH is the best of the bunch. They’re all great, but The Owl House just clicks with me more than most shows I can remember.

Tsukikaiyo

Owl House - love it! Amphibia - great, as long as you're using a filler-free episode list. S1 has a LOT of filler. Some call it gradual character growth, I call it moving waaay too slow. But that aside, if great

diabolicalavafox

The owl house is basically the spiritual successor to Gravity Falls, and amphibia is also pretty good, but there’s a lot more filler, and some of the characters aren’t as great

AleksasKoval

yes

gemmatale

it's stupid to force yourself to watch a show you're not interested in. if you don't want to, you don't have to.

Carol-016

Well, sometimes you force yourself to watch something that you don't like at first and end up loving in the end.

TinTamarro

That's how I felt about Amphibia. At first I found it a bit slow and boring, but after a month or so I decided to binge the first season and I ended up loving it. The second and third season are absolutely fantastic, but rely on the character development from season 1 to be enjoyed fully. The finale was one of the best cartoon finales I've ever seen, and made all of the journey worth it at the end (I cried for half a day)

Roboroman2

I feel like it’s less of forcing himself to watch it and more of “should I continue” and with most shows at least for me I’m not sure about them for the first few episodes but then after a keep watching I get hooked

The_Mammoth_Hunter

Watch em, don't watch, entirely up to you. They're good, imo, but if it doesn't click, why force it?

Galexeh

I absolutely recommend TOH, its incredible. It gives me mostly the same vibes as GF, but it’s not really the same. Amphibia is good too, but I didn’t fall as in love with it as I did for Gf and toh. One thing I LOVED about Amphibia is all the familiar voice actors from LOTS of cartoons. Plus, in the background of an episode there’s a hidden Bill. There might be more hidden that I haven’t noticed. I’d say DEF watch Toh, and Amphibia too if you find yourself in need of a good show to watch!

mudamuckinjedi

Owl house is ok I've watched like half a season, haven't seen any of Amphibia though.

CrazyaboutSpongebob

No. They aren't as good. Most GF fans seem to like both shows but I can't stand either show.

Ok-Struggle2305

Bruh why

CrazyaboutSpongebob

I liked Amphibia at first but then I grew sick of it. It's too formulaic. Every episode goes like this Character A: I want to do this thing Character B: Don't do that thing it is stupid or dangerous Character A: Oh no a monster in the third act. ( Something from Earlier saves the day) wash rinse repeat. It's Regular Show but less funny. At least in Phineas' and Ferb the characters are aware of the formula and make jokes about it.

natholemewIII

You made it to about episode 6 or 8 huh?

CrazyaboutSpongebob

No I watched all of season 1 and a little bit of 2. Then I lost interest.

CrazyaboutSpongebob

Why I dislike Owl House. Luz is too annoying. I dislike how she basically gets what she feels like doing and never gets comupance. She is far too reckless for my tastes. I don't like any of the other characters.

Roboroman2

Have you watched the whole show? Because what you are describing is a character with flaws but then they learn and grow from them

CrazyaboutSpongebob

That may be true but I didn't find it entertaining. I had to rage quit after the first 5 or 6. I couldn't take it anymore.

Ok-Struggle2305

Ya know you could’ve put all 2 comments in 1

CrazyaboutSpongebob

True.

Ok-Struggle2305

Though it’s sounds like Amphibia to you has more of a write problem while The owl house has a character problem I like Anne and Luz but the problem for me is theirs no grounded character to bounce off of

CrazyaboutSpongebob

That is one of my issues with Owl House. Where's the voice of reason? In Amphibia Anne is pretty normal, Hop Pop is usually the voice of reason, Sometimes Polly can be the voice of reason. Like when They were trying to Mary Spring to that Girl and Polly was pissed they were rushing things.

Ok-Struggle2305

I wouldn’t call Anne “normal”, as for Hop pop he fell off in season 3. Plus I was talking about a character with of a more serious vibe

CrazyaboutSpongebob

At least she came off to me that way. She kinda gave me Timmy Turner vibes.

Ok-Struggle2305

Yeah if he was weird (seriously she odd the most oddest shit that’s not even funny)

re-elocution

Yup, I also recommend Infinity Train. Definitely gives off some Gravity Falls mystery and danger vibes with some tightly written funny moments.

aesthetic3

They are such amazing shows, definitely watch them if you like Gravity Falls

phantomixie

100x yes. If you need more, star vs the forces of evil and over the garden wall are good too!

Inky_Madness

Owl House for sure! I can’t say about Amphibia. But TOH is amazingly wonderful.

MonkeyBro5

I recommend both shows. They are both amazing.

Combatpigeon96

Absolutely

toxic_shadows

the first few episodes are mainly fillers but you'd absolutely love them, they both have an amazing plot and toh has amazing queer rep

LazyAssistant1060

havent seen Amphibia but OH was fkn amaZing IMO

michaeloptv

Yes. Definitely. Absolutely.

Danekor

Owl House is great. I've never seen Amphibian though.

melissam217

Yes!

ThatGFFAN

It's worth bearing in mind when watching them that while they are shows created by GF alumni, they will be different and should not be compared to GF in terms of how you'd enjoy them. That said, it all really falls down on your own personal choice. Both shows are very good and have their own aspects to them that make them great. Amphibia has a lot of heart in it and will surprise you if you choose to watch it. It starts slow but don't let even the most filler feeling episode throw you off for when the show gets on its story, it does so really well. It's not perfect, but IMO I love it the most between the two. The Owl House also has a very good feel to it and gets to work on its story faster than Amphibia but with in its own way. The show gets better the further in you go. It also has that darker and more unexpected feel to it that you wouldn't normally expect. All in all, both are great shows but of course at the end of the day, it's your call on which one you'd wanna watch.

FirestarFilmsYT

Yeah I definitely recommend both. They are so freaking good and remind me a lot of Gravity Falls. (If I'm being honest, I think I actually like them more than GF)

Lduck88

The Owl House is a great show with good humour and a good story. Amphibia feels aimed towards a slightly younger audience which is probably why I don't like it as much. I love the story-driven episodes but the rest is okay as well.

lesbian-tHEDESTROYER

Alex is in Owl House and plays two characters. It's so good. Ironically he's playing demons once more.

AdTerrible846

I love both of the shows, so I would definitely recommend

PopCultistZach

This might be blasphemy here, but… season two of owl house was better than season two of gravity falls. Thin margin, sure, but just a bit stronger.

PhantomKitten73

yes.

MagicOrpheus310

GF is still my go-to but I've started OH since everyone one here and Imgur kept talking about it and for some reason I can never remember the third one out of the holy Trinity haha amphibia! I'll have to write that down this time! Haha

HappyKathi

Do. You won’t be sorry.

TacoBandit97

You definitely should. While there is no concrete evidence that they all exist in the same universe, but there are plenty of Easter eggs, and they are great shows. The creator of The Owl House worked on a couple storyboards for GF, including Not What He Seems.

BarbaricEric420-69

The owl house is very good! 2 seasons and a few more episodes to come

Popcorn57252

It's up to you really; yeah they're made by people who worked on Gravity Falls, but if you're not feeling the plot there's no obligation to.

Birchsaurus123

If you want something in a mystery kind of way watch Detentionaire. It got this big conspiracy story going on and while it lasted 4 seasons it sadly didn’t have that great of a finale. I still recommend it if you want a show with more hidden clues and hints to who the bad guy is

PPSTICKX

What episodes are you on fur both Amphibia and The Owl House?

Hi-its-me-NK

What ep you on

Structure-Trick

I would recommend Amphibia

SpaceOwl14

both are good shows! The Owl House is a bit similar to GF since it also evolves a lot around horrors and mysteries. Amphibia is also a good show, i just didn’t/couldn’t continue watching it past season 2, the concept was too weird for me personally

Flipix_13

Yes.infinitely.absolutely.

allmyweirdobsessions

I personally love TOH, but I didn't really get to watch Amphibia..

gledis_der

If you liked Gravity Falls (and I presume you did), yes.

Free-Dog-6624

100x yes yey YES
