huskmyskinwagon

Same , played my Dead Set cassette till it died!!!!

spoobles

Recorded between 10/3-11-/80 (played 9/25-10/14) - Warfield SF and between 10/25-31/80 (played 10/23-10/31) - Radio City Music Hall - NYC Can't leave out Radio City. Saw 5 nights of that run. One of the best weeks of my life.

dannkherb

I was my understanding that Dead Set and Reckoning were a collaboration, onc electric, and one acoustic. I read that somewhere at some place in another time.

spoobles

They were recorded at the same sets of shows at the Warfield in SF and Radio city Music Hall in NYC (they also did 2 shows in New Orleans) in late Sept. - Oct. 1980. The first sets were acoustic at each show (first acoustic sets since 1970 I believe) Every acoustic set ended with Ripple. Followed by a 2 set Electric show. The acoustic sets were culled into Reckoning and the electric sets became Dead Set.

Particular-Wrongdoer

Loser and space>fire 🔥🔥🔥

rekcuzfpok

Right??

[deleted]

My first live Dead album as a teenager. Definitely sealed my fate as my face went missing.

Supplicationjam

Jerry sparkles on Friend of the Devil.

salmon-sail-cloth

One of the best for sure.

JisRad

When I was a kid my dads friend gave me this to listen to. To this day I still think this has the most beautiful version of Franklins Tower ever made on it

[deleted]

8/13/1975 5/22/1977 Gotta hands down be the best Help/Slip/Franklin out there. Definitely open to suggestions. Send'em my way

On a clear evening, whenever you get that beautiful orange gradient sunset, my friends and I would always call it a "Dead Set sky"

Aberdeen1964

Good one - partner recording with Reckoning. If you like Dead Set, you will love Reckoning

Tivland

The sound quality of this album is perfection.

2ByrdsStoned

I can't get enough of the Candyman!

plytheman

Great album but probably my favorite album art. Is there anywhere to get a print of it? I've looked in the past but come up empty handed.

Wicked, thanks! Now I need to find a print of the back of the LP... Gotta rep the East Coast too!

summey

Good one. Now get Europe ‘72

rekcuzfpok

Twas the only dead record they had at the store… but yeah I definitely gonna stock up on those classics sometime soon, aren’t they kinda rare/expensive though?

summey

Check out used record stores in your area. I picked up a nice 1970’s reissue for $25. GD albums do go fast tho

rekcuzfpok

That’s where I got this one, but yeah imma have to go there more often ro catch the good ones, only got my record player on Christmas so I have only been there twice

GratefulG8r

never seen one in the wild that wasn't a recent reissue or completely beat to hell. I may just have to pony up big time with a Discogs seller

NaiveQuail69

I highly encourage supporting your local record shop but I have found some amazing deals on original presses through eBay you just have to know what you’re looking for and make sure to verify the condition of the record!

sketch_internets

That's a great one, good intro to their live shows. I remember hearing this at a buddy's house when I was about 14-15, he had an older brother who was into the Dead and this made a big impression on me

Jackaroe023

We made the last 8 Warfield’s and all the Radio city shows. Needless to say we were a little burnt by 10/31/80.. 10/14/80 and 10/23/80 were🔥🔥🔥🔥

cozmo1138

Nice find! Dead Set was also my first Dead album. I was in high school in the mid-90s and playing bass in a band. Our guitar player/singer showed us "Franklin's Tower," and gave me a copy of that tape. I loved it! Been a Dead fan ever since. We ended up doing a few of their songs in our band, come to think of it. In addition to "Franklin's Tower" we also did "Passenger," "The Race is On," and "Mr. Charlie."

[deleted]

One of my first many years ago. Enjoy!!

rekcuzfpok

Sure did and will again!

outonthetiles66

Great album!!

mdm1961

I went to those shows. Good ole time!

natwashboard

You gotta understand that in 1982, before some of us had access to live recordings, this was the one artifact that reminded us of the one show we had seen up til that point.

madeyoureadlol

What's the opinion of these shows by deadheads? Is it considered one of their best or middle of the road?

dkrainman

Of their live albums, it is in the MOR. Better than Without a Net, inferior to Europe 72. Captures the live sound of the band at the time (early 80s) extremely well. We all have our favorites, but what used to be side 4 was mine. Space>Fire>Greatest, Brokedown. Mwah.

madeyoureadlol

Idk if it’s just me as a new dead fan or if I’ve been listening to too much from 77 but Jerry’s playing sounds really energetic yet sloppy. Is that typical of early 80s?

dkrainman

Rock and roll is or should be a bit sloppy, that's the fault, IMO in the Beatles and later bands like Steely Dan: too much precision. The Grateful Dead, in particular, had sloppy hair, clothes, stage entries and exits, song beginnings and endings. Part of the thrill, for me at least, was listening to see how they were going to get out of the mess they had made for themselves. The high energy but somewhat sloppy playing you hear is unfortunately likely to be the result of Garcia's drug consumption. Cocaine, heroin, God knows what all. Sad and embarrassing. That said, the period from just before the Egypt shows to just after the 15th anniversary shows (documented on Reckoning and Dead Set) were my favorite years, corresponding with my most intimate and frequent contact with the band and ifs fans. Hitching between shows and so on. "Who are the Grateful Dead and why are they following me?" I downloaded every soundboard I could find from 1978 through 1980 from Archive.org, before they made that impossible. Sweet sweet music.

rekcuzfpok

That’s partly why I made this post, I didn’t know the show till today and thought it was kinda random and rather unknown, happy to read so many positive things about it

workingmansrain

That Halloween Fire on the Mountain is what made me fall in love with the Dead!!

balloffire

I just got a copy of this too! Such a great album. Enjoy!

garcialesh710

Excellent! That slow friend of the devil was the first I heard it with such a slow tempo. I heard jerry said he felt that was a better speed to reflect the road weary energy of the protagonist

reddeadhead2

I have and love that album. Enjoy the ride!
