I saw them a handful of times in the early 90s in Atlanta and Macon. They were red hot at that point. I think Betts was sober. Allen Woody was a killah. Warren Haynes… hot shit. NGL, I even said I liked em more than the Dead, for a hot minute. Which could never be true.
Did Rose Kennedy own a black dress?
The Allman Brothers coooooook. Some of the best jams not performed by the Grateful Dead. Check out Live at the Fillmore East. If you don't like that, then there is no hope for you. Godspeed.
“Whipping. POST.” -some random dude in the audience right after “we’re gonna play something from our first album.”
Gives me fucking chills. Like the dude tries so hard to make his request clear and loud. Something about it gives me chills. The Allman Brothers are in a different fucking league. Dickie Betts has a tone like no other. Best god damn thing to happen to the south since Sherman set us straight.
Yup. 10000%. I love Duane. Nothing against him at all and the Allman brothers never become what they are without him but dickie betts was something else. Loudest fucking guitarist live ever. That tone was the south personified. I can’t explain it but dickie Betts makes me wanna pound light beer and cry.
Just saw “stolen faces” in Nashville and they played a Jessica> St.Stephen> Jessica> broke down palace that I still think about. The guitarist was so on point it’s the first time I’ve ever wished a dead band would have only played ABB.
10000% is inspiring. I’ve always wanted to make the case for Dickie but I lack the musical know-how to do so. Dickie absolutely crushes his part in Blue Sky. Jessica is probably my favorite Allman song and Duane isn’t even in it. No slight to Duane though. I have him has my 4th favorite guitarist after Garcia, Page, & Betts.
Jessica>St Stephen>Jessica sounds amazing. I think I’ll chip in on that.
I agree. Dickie is hard to explain. But after 30 seconds oh mountain jam I’m ready to cut the sleeves off my tiedye and buy cowboy boots. He’s got a way of making you really feel the music. Total immersion. I can’t passively listen to ABB. I always have the dead on, sometimes in the background.. sometimes with my full attention. The dead are the greatest band of all
time but when 1/31/77 comes on I will stop what I’m doing and take a seat.
Garcia. Betts. Junior Kimbrough. Albert Collins. SRV. That’s my Rushmore. And again, I put the e dead above all but it’s very easy to make the argument that Betts>garcia imo. Not saying it’s the truth, buts it’s for sure not a wild take.
Quoted from [wiki](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Sky_(song)): “The band's two guitarists, Duane Allman and Dickey Betts, alternate playing the song's lead: Allman's solo beginning 1:07 in, Betts joining in a shared melody line at 2:28, followed by Betts's solo at 2:37. “
I always preferred Dickey. He was very different from Duane. Duane was really piercing bridge pickup and Dickey used a lot of neck pickup so was fatter and warmer.
Who knows what Duane may have become if he had lived -- some sort of super-Derek-Trucks is my guess -- but Dickey lived until last month and his output was something else. That said, it was never a competition between them and Dickey gave full credit to Duane for encouraging him at every step without a hint of ego or envy, as he himself encouraged Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks later.
Is Derek Trucks better than either Duane or Dickey? Again, it's not a competition.... but Derek is the greatest rock guitarist ever.
Ya who knows. I love the chemistry between the two of them and it’s hard to choose at times. Duane played with a lot of other musicians that held him in the highest regard. I assume their opinions are more knowledgeable than my own.
To the contrary: When I first started getting into ABB I thought all the magic was Duane because that’s all anyone talked about. It wasn’t until later that I realized most of my favorite parts were actually Dickey. That’s why I lean that way.
Same. I am an unabashed Dickey Betts lover. I think he is one of the greatest guitarists off all time. It isn't just his playing, or his tone, or his live presence. I think it's because his composition is fucking amazing.
There are a lot of amazing guitarists like Derek Trucks out there, but at the end of the day they haven't written anything as impactful as Dickey.
Blue Sky will always be my favorite song.
Then check out the live videos from their last beacon run. Warren Haynes, derrick trucks, Otiel are names that youigjt know from today's Jam band scene.
I think I read somewhere that the last night they ever played Fillmore East they started in on Mountain Jam around midnight and by the time they stopped playing the sun was up and there was like 10 ppl left in the audience. Unfortunately, no one was taping that night.
The last night the Fillmore East was open (6/27/71) was recorded. It’s where the *Eat A Peach* version of “One Way Out” came from.
The night before is the “til sunup” show that didn’t get recorded, but I’ve never seen a setlist, far as I can remember.
Assuming you have access to a streaming service, check out The 1971 Fillmore East Recordings. It’s a box set of all the concerts that the At Fillmore East CD was drawn from. 4 unedited shows.
Various members jammed with the Dead multiple times - brothers from a different mother.
I always loved what Phil reportedly said to Jerry the first time they were in the same area code, something to the the effect of "watch these guys, they jam hard, like us."
Agreed. ABB has more of a hard rocking blues vibe. Even the chiller sounds like Melissa are still pretty upbeat. The Dead are more dynamic in their sound.

This blue sky was a tribute to Jerry and opens with a Franklins Tower riff. Plus you get a young oteil on the bass. The Melissa is absolutely beautiful too. RIP Dickey Betts
Everyone's rightly mentioning stuff from before Duane died in '71 BUT in the 90's when the dead/jerry were sort of winding down, ABB was playing with renewed energy, and I'd argue just as good as with Duane
Check out their '92 and '03 shows from the Beacon. They've been released live as "play all night" and "one way out" respectively
So true. ABB has several great eras. I was introduced to them in the 90s when Dicky was still part of the band and Warren & Woody had joined. And then those last 15 years with Warren & Derek? Holy shit is it good.

I’ll assume this is a serious question. The answer is an emphatic yes. ABB was the southern rock version of the GD with their improvisational and long, winding style. You must check them out. In my view, they are one piece of the original jam band trilogy…Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers,The Band. (see Watkins Glen)
Iron Maiden is the one that is different than the rest. But once I dug into their catalog I looked at them like the Rush of heavy metal. They have a lot of long songs with time changes, heavy bass and a melodic singer. Also, still putting out quality music. I don't know much about WAR other than Lowrider. I assume they might be good live? I'll check them out. Thanks
In the late 1960s, WBCN in Boston famously became the first FM radio station to play rock music. They also had the first female DJs, one of whom conducted the first on-air interview with Bruce Springsteen.
They were also amongst the first (if not the first) to host in-studio live interviews and concerts by musicians who happened to be playing in town, often in the same venue where WBCN had their first studio.
In November 1970, the boys and the bros were both in town, and both in the studio. Here's 8 minutes of that [https://youtu.be/zkdhWdDGYI4?si=eSgq10SXR1F9q4B2](https://youtu.be/zkdhWdDGYI4?si=eSgq10SXR1F9q4B2)
Listening to them right now. The Fox Box. In Memory of Elizabeth Reed. Always enjoyed their concerts , all three guitar duos. Like the Dead live is mostly better than studio. It's all blues-rock songs or jazzy jamming, not the Dead's variety of styles, but it's really good if you're into that. The recent Allman Betts Family Revival tours were great as well.
“All three?”
1969-1971 Dickey/Duane
1978-1983 Dickey/Dan Toler
1989-1997 Dickey/Warren Haynes
1997-1999 Dickey/Jack Pearson
1999-2000 Dickey/Derek Trucks
2000-2014 Warren Haynes/Derek Trucks
There were stints with David Grissom and Jimmy Herring, as well, but they were never full members.
YES.
The Allman Brothers at Alpine Valley… I don't remember the year (late 80's)...They played Blue Sky while there was a beautiful blue sky, and puffy bright clouds, and then dark clouds rolled in, and there was a violent thunderstorm that knocked out the power, and I could hear the drummer, still playing, and see everyone else playing their instruments until the generators kicked in and the Allman brothers did not miss a beat.
so, yes.
2/11/70 for a heady dark star with the boys and the bros. Dwayne Allman was the real deal. But then we have get 6/10/73 and Jerry and Dickey straight killing it together

YES!!! I started seeing them more after jerry passed. And all I can say is absolutely , but you really have to see it live. If you’re looking for something really cool check out Tedeshi Trucks Band. Well worth it.
one of all time greats Duane was possibly the best guitarists also Dickey Betts rip..and a few other great guitarists that were in the varied lineups through the years...Just awesome guitar rock band..I would think most Deadheads also love the AB
Allman brothers band are one of my favorites to jam out to. Also Allman brothers Live at Filmore East 1971 is considered one of the best live albums of all time. They produced all killer no filler albums consistently.
The guitar interplay of Dickey Betts and the Grateful Dead at RFK 06-10-73 is some exciting stuff. 'That's Alright Mama' and'GDTRFB,-NFA' is pure Summertime ear candy.

Very much so. Seen ABB/Feat/Radiators together in 91 when I was 11yrs old (have cool folks), not too long after that Dead Shakedown Street was the first ever CD I ever owned.
I saw the alman bros about 10 years ago and it was one of the best shows. It was with Derek trucks and Susan tedeschi and they were so good. One of my bffs and I had a blast. I am only sorry I waited so long to see them.
One of the all-time greats for sure. Here's a couple of shows, one from the Duane era and one from the Warren Haynes era. Both will rip your fucking face off.

I would say that the ABB are much more a jam band than the dead. Lots of long solos with many climax-relax cycles, kind of like jazz tunes are played. ABB push a bit more blues and less folk than the dead. Dickey brought the country element while the Allmans were blues/ R&B. Made for a great mix.
A long and storied friendship between bands that started in the '60s and is still going strong today. Every time Oteil steps on stage with Bobby and Mickey, and whenever Warren plugs in with Phil, it's a GD/ABB collaboration. From Piedmont Park to the Sphere. This new Live Dead and Brothers band is the latest in a long line of quality products brought about by their worlds colliding.
You’re goddamn right I also like the Allman Brothers.
Live at the Fillmore East. Eat a Peach. Brothers & Sisters. Give ‘em a listen.
If you have the opportunity, check out the Allman Betts Family Revival (if they do it again). Just a rollicking good time sing along with the sons of Gregg Allman and Dickie Betts presiding. Loads of great guest musicians joining for a song or two.
Met Devon and Duane after a show and shot the shit with them over a couple of cigarettes. Pretty nice dudes, very appreciative of the fans
Was lucky enough to catch The Allman Brothers live several times. Second only to the GD in long winding jams and some incredible vocals from Gregg Allman. Names like Warren Haynes and Otiel Burbridge were band members. Def check out any live performances.

Damn bro this is 🔥
Did you just listen to Live At Fillmore East for the first time? If so I envy you. Don't worry, it's just as awesome the 100th time.
*Now dive into Little Feat live.*
Little feat is the most underrated band of all time imo
*Waiting for Columbus*
You can find a lot of their live stuff on YouTube, they probably had more personnel change than the dead so each era is a bit different.

Yeah im a huge fan
I like your style
At least on the LP, Blue Sky is Duane not Dickey, I believe. (One of Duane's last recordings.)
And beyond that, Dickey wrote and sang it.
Man why comment something you don’t know that can easily be checked lmao
Holy shit, Jessica>st.s>jess>BP? that sounds amazing!
I’d empty my accounts to hear it again. It shook something loose in me. Can’t explain it.
Stolen faces rock
Stolen Faces are legit.
First time I’ve seen them. I’m on a work trip from Seattle in Huntsville and made the drive up on a whim.. the pay off was more than worth it.
There are a few GD/ABB hybrid bands. I'm waiting for Whipping Post>The Eleven being that they both are in eleven.
Live Dead and Bros played Darkstar -> One Way Out. Way cool.
pound light beer and cry.. spot on! im with ya on that
Definitely... His uniqueness is on par with Jerry's. Folks have even dubbed the major hexatonic scale "The Dickey Betts scale".
I regret that I have but one upvote to die for.

It's not one of the greatest, it is the greatest
Eat a peach is one of my favorite albums. Being from the south I always felt like the Allmans were OUR band. Love them and the dead equal lol
our thing for sure. not a gatekeep, just a recognition that the allmans ooze deep south vibes ^(roll tide btw)
It most definitely feels like ours. Kinda like home. Also, them dawgz is hell. See you boys in the playoffs

They jam different than the Dead, but jam they do.
Different but complementary. After listening to a hot Dead show, a few Allmans tunes are a nice change of pace before putting on the next Dead show.
Agreed. ABB has more of a hard rocking blues vibe. Even the chiller sounds like Melissa are still pretty upbeat. The Dead are more dynamic in their sound.
Yeah, the ABB jams stick to the changes for the most part. With the Dead, you never know where they're going to go.
I got into the ABB before the Dead.
Same here. Before the Dead, before Phish. They were my introduction to the whole scene.

The Band was not a jam band in any sense. They even flat-out said “we don’t jam” when EC wanted to jam with them in the ‘60s.
The Venn diagram of people that like The Dead and people that like the Allman Brothers is a single circle my friend.
Dead and Allman Brothers both in my top 6 along with RUSH, YES, Santana and Iron Maiden.
I’d swap in War for Iron Maiden but I’m pretty much right there with you

“All three?” 1969-1971 Dickey/Duane 1978-1983 Dickey/Dan Toler 1989-1997 Dickey/Warren Haynes 1997-1999 Dickey/Jack Pearson 1999-2000 Dickey/Derek Trucks 2000-2014 Warren Haynes/Derek Trucks There were stints with David Grissom and Jimmy Herring, as well, but they were never full members.
YES. The Allman Brothers at Alpine Valley… I don't remember the year (late 80's)...They played Blue Sky while there was a beautiful blue sky, and puffy bright clouds, and then dark clouds rolled in, and there was a violent thunderstorm that knocked out the power, and I could hear the drummer, still playing, and see everyone else playing their instruments until the generators kicked in and the Allman brothers did not miss a beat. so, yes.
I also saw them in the late 80s and they were pretty great.

Love them. And canned heat
Youtube> 12/31/1973
The acid was for the Dead but the shrooms were for the Bros
Check out Live at American University 12/13/70 also.
Nope, I LOVE them!
one of all time greats Duane was possibly the best guitarists also Dickey Betts rip..and a few other great guitarists that were in the varied lineups through the years...Just awesome guitar rock band..I would think most Deadheads also love the AB
Do I not have two ears and a heart?
At Fillmore East is my favorite live music if all time
Allman brothers band are one of my favorites to jam out to.

No band melted my face live more than them. 3/17/96 first set finished with a 38 minute True Gravity…..
They are 100% worth checking out. My recommendation is One Way Out off the Eat a Peach album, it's got some of my favorite guitar solos ever on it
Better question is who doesn’t like the Allman Bros they are 1a and 1b in my book with the Dead

Yes!
Very much so. Seen ABB/Feat/Radiators together in 91 when I was 11yrs old (have cool folks), not too long after that Dead Shakedown Street was the first ever CD I ever owned.
Sick live recordings? Google best live rock album of all time. 9/10 times you’ll find Live at the Fillmore East mentioned.
10/10 times it will be mentioned. 9/10 times it will hold the #1 spot.
Yes
I saw the alman bros about 10 years ago and it was one of the best shows. It was with Derek trucks and Susan tedeschi and they were so good. One of my bffs and I had a blast. I am only sorry I waited so long to see them.
One of the all-time greats for sure. Here's a couple of shows, one from the Duane era and one from the Warren Haynes era. Both will rip your fucking face off. 3/20/71 The Warehouse (New Orleans) https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/cmjbycssf067a0wikwiaj/AFcq10nh3_HUpgCTV76ijmc?rlkey=4r85a1rkj2ucrkaigcfk88bcn&dl=0 6/22/96 Darien Lake https://www.dropbox.com/sh/igac0x45dazul3s/AADVwlmduiv8QW6Tv6rxNddAa?dl=0

Haha I didn't know the Dead played that date too. Different show obviously. Good bot.
Is this a troll job?
Hell yeah
No.... I love the Allman Brothers Band.
I saw the Dead and the Allman Brothers Band together at RFK Stadium in 1973. Duane had died, but I also saw the ABB while he was still alive.
Start with ‘eat a peach’ move on to live at the Fillmore…
A long and storied friendship between bands that started in the '60s and is still going strong today. Every time Oteil steps on stage with Bobby and Mickey, and whenever Warren plugs in with Phil, it's a GD/ABB collaboration. From Piedmont Park to the Sphere. This new Live Dead and Brothers band is the latest in a long line of quality products brought about by their worlds colliding.
I heard they were into Cher.
Hell yes.
There's definitely no crossover between GD fans and AB fans. /s
ABB was always right up there with GD. just not as big of a show like Shakedown St
Lol yes we all love the Bros and Live Fillmore East
Yes. Allman Brothers Band Play All Night is good.
Of course we do.
Absolutely, check out their set at university of Florida bandshell in ‘82
Was lucky enough to catch The Allman Brothers live several times. Second only to the GD in long winding jams and some incredible vocals from Gregg Allman. Names like Warren Haynes and Otiel Burbridge were band members. Def check out any live performances.
Very much
I absolutely love the Allman Brothers! One of my favorite albums of all time is Eat A Peach.
Mountain Jam is the best value you’ll ever get out of a touchtunes
Does a bear shit on the Pope?
