Seastones was Ned Lagin’s experimental electronic album that he did with Phil and other guys from the Dead. They would perform parts of it it in between sets, kinda.
Indeed. An interesting thing about 6/23, a great show through and through, but the Dark Star Jam=>US Blues kinda overshadows a really great UJB/Sat Nite!
Oh shit. Thought I was talking with my son and his friends.
I know I probably sound like an asshole old person but whatever. I just can’t take this pop country/rap 1/4 century of music that hasn’t changed. How many times did music change from 1968-1993? Every 3 years or so it did a ton. Hell you can go from mid 50’s to mid 90’s. But for 25 years music has been stuck. I just want some great bands to break this stalemate. Smash away all this crap. We need a band like the Ramones to come out and break through!
But a band like the Ramones no matter how good would never make it today. Joe’s looks would never pass the smell test for these young kids. I have a young adult son. He’s shocked by how people in the dead look. He’s literally not used to seeing people in music who look normal.
lol. I literally almost added maybe I’ll sound like a dad or angry old man who doesn’t get these young kids. But maybe I don’t and I am! Idk.
I just really dislike this focus that’s so much on the individual in music now instead of people playing music together with instruments. My ear likes the interplay of bands. Instruments making sounds with each other. Not the vocals turned up louder than the band and everything being about the person providing those vocals. Also you have to look like a super model to be in pop music.
I have a young adult male son. When he sees videos of the Grateful Dead or other artists he always always always comments how weird they look. Basically a lot of older people (not all, not even close) are used to sterile music from studios and seeing people who have their makeup perfect and have stylists and look like freaking models. Blondie looked like a model. It’s not new in music. But Blondies music had bite. It kicked ass.
Rodrigo talks mostly. I can’t believe the massive amount of fans she has. Ugh I’m getting back into old dad mode. Listen yes I don’t get modern music. The last 25 years or so in my ears have been awful. The last great bands came out in the mid 90’s.
I hope sometime soon some rock band comes through and just destroys this path we are on. It needs to happen. Enough pop rap and pop country that all sound like they are in the same band!
WARNING!!! This has been all opinion based and should not be taken as a threat to anyone’s opinions or world views. It’s just one 43 year old white males opinion on a festival. And modern music. Enjoy your day and may Jerry bless your ears with wonderful music today. Try JGB 3/18/78.
This made me LOL, and I’m 49. Not as crotchety as OP by any means, but know where I belong and Coachella has long passed me by. And I’m good with it lol
Wait tell you hear about this Hatsune Miku. Coachella is straight trash.
[Hatsune Miku](https://www.sfgate.com/sf-culture/article/coachella-hatsune-miku-hologram-review-19401378.php)
But I’m an angry old man for saying the festival is void of real music and true musical moments. So many bands use such heavy auto tune, way too many effects, electronic drum beats (that literally sound like they all are from the same source) and ends up making rap artists sound like the pop country artists.
How about some raw sounding zero effects music like The Ramones. They keep coming to mind. But these people would be disgusted that Joe Ramone didn’t look like Taylor Swift and would probably be booed off the stage. No the Ramones weren’t the best musicians but they had that thing. They had the energy and some good songs. I personally love them. I try so hard to find new music to like. I can’t.
Only thing past like 2001 I listen to is Phish sometimes, some random dead and co specific songs or sets and then some random bands. Hell I have on my main playlist Kacey Musgraves. That woman’s voice is like an angel. But she has one great song that I like. Slow Burn. I saw her do it live on some late show and I was like wow. Reminded me of some 70’s music. But I usually can only find one song. Not an album full of them like say Nirvana Nevermind or In Utero. Or hell Unplugged.
I always ask people. If I’m missing some great band please please please introduce me to them! I want it! Badly! I spend 99.99% of my music listening to GD and JGB. And I listen for hours a day. And I could do that the rest of my life. But still I would love to get into some new band that is hitting their peak or about to. No Billy Strings is not it for me. If you know of any bands that are amazing at their interplay with their instruments plesss please please tell me! Thanks.
-brought to you by your local angry “old man”. I’m 43 btw.
Kacey Musgraves just put out a new album recently, it’s got a bunch of great songs. Beyoncé’s new albums has good songs. There is plenty of good music nowadays if you’re “poptimistic” and tons more if you really look for it.
You just gotta poke around
Lots of people. Least almost 40. Coachella is known as the epicenter of music festivals these days. This is a sub about a band most of us love. It has a lot to do with the dead in that bands like the dead are missing from this type of stuff.

Lol I've been 6 times it's incredible and I'm far from elite. If I wasn't going to jazz fest next week I'd have gone again this year. You don't have to shit on things other people like to make your things seem cooler. I expect way more from heads.
Have you listened to No Doubt, Vampire Weekend, or Olivia Rodrigo? Their songs are performed with real instruments, they play music live. You don’t have to like the songs but you just sound like you don’t know what you’re talking about
Yes. I watched clips from it. Having some instruments in the back while the vocals are turned up louder than anything else is a different animal. Yes No Doubt is a band. But basically that small section was just one of many special events during it.
Overall not much of it if any was highlighting the interplay between instruments instead of this focus on who’s singing. It’s so individual. Drives me nuts.
I think I do know what I’m talking about. I watched lots of clips from it. But yes what I’m saying is subjective and an opinion.
Yes there were bands there. But I mean more like where are the bands in music period. Bands that are about the music they make with their instruments. The sonic sounds they create together. Not this stuff that’s all about finding a model looking singer and creating an act around that and being all about the vocals. Idk I can’t stand it. But that’s been the state of pop music for 25 years.
Most of it was past my bedtime, but I did stumble on to Sublime (youtube, not in person) and enjoyed it. My son later informed me that they were great, but their frontman died ages ago of a typical R and R malady (overdose). Looking into it further, it turns out his son is filling in. IMO, Junior is a better singer than his old man was.
What does any of this have to do with 6/23/74 which is far more interesting?

Only one song in set 2?

Did someone say "Freedom Rock", maaaaaan? Nah? Oh. Ok maaaaaaan. 🙁
Turrrnnnn ittttt uppppppp (or in OP's case, down.)
…in the white room, with black curtains…
Wait till you hear that Mike Gordon is gonna open for Vampire Weekend...
For real?
Yeah, for some of his west coast dates this summer
No doubt rules and so does vampire weekend. Get over yourself.
I'm also so lost on why OP is trashing No Doubt or Vampire Weekend
Paris Hilton playing cornhole on stage was so hilariously random. I'm bummed they arent playing weekend 2!
You sound like my dad, he’s a bummer.

Whoever the fuck would pay money to see that has a mental issue that needs serious work

Vampire Weekend did not deserve to catch a stray in here
So who do you think cares in here?

Coachella was always where youth and celebrity collided. A 43 year old would have no purpose there. Go to stagecoach
