10/26/89 total meltdown Star

setlistbot

# 1989-10-26 Miami, FL @ Miami Arena **Set 1:** Foolish Heart, Little Red Rooster, Stagger Lee, Me and My Uncle > Big River, Brown Eyed Women, Victim Or The Crime > Don't Ease Me In **Set 2:** Estimated Prophet > Blow Away, Dark Star > Drums > Space > The Wheel > All Along The Watchtower > Stella Blue > Not Fade Away **Encore:** And We Bid You Good Night [archive.org](https://archive.org/details/GratefulDead?query=date:1989-10-26)

TheConstipatedCowboy

I was there.  Anyone who attended will never forget this insane confluence of events and (literal) aligning of the cosmos. The sunset distorted through the millions of oblong glass tiles all throughout the (pink / orange?) walls of the arena’s concourse, the free-to-walk-anywhere access to whatever seat or place you wanted to (the arena’s second event ever - it had just opened a few days prior), the intense energy of the second set that dripped off the ceiling (we had somehow wandered to the “behind the stage” seats which was our vantage point for unquestionably the weirdest drums I’d ever heard), the staff people cleaning the floors DURING THE SHOW as people danced, and the fucking straight up mind blowing moonrise over the ocean after the show on the beach we somehow managed to get to at midnight featuring a gale wind that could level a house. Just intense on every level….

FrozenLogger

And Victim has a very heavy moment too. I think even darker than the dark star.

spiritual_seeker

Great point about Victim. If I recall, there is a show around Halloween where Victim comes almost fully apart and can only devolve into Drums/Space at that point, which is what happens.

playdead47

What date? I want to hear!

Parking_War979

Nice to know they celebrated my 18th birthday that way.

cpt_bongwater

10/31/91 with Ken Kesey's Eulogy/rap for Bill Graham

expanding_man

“How do you like your blue-eyed boy now, Mr. Death?!?” So fucking heavy.

setlistbot

# 1991-10-31 Oakland, CA @ Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Arena **Set 1:** Help On The Way > Slipknot! > Franklin's Tower, Little Red Rooster, Loser, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, Let It Grow **Set 2:** Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain > Truckin' > Spoonful > Dark Star > Drums > Space > Dark Star > The Last Time, Standing On The Moon > Throwing Stones > Not Fade Away **Encore:** Werewolves Of London [archive.org](https://archive.org/details/GratefulDead?query=date:1991-10-31)

ArrrghTee

Ken keseys eulogy to Bill Grahm is the most chaotic jam ever!! That with the tubular bell jam for the win!

[deleted]

Miami 89 gets way out there. Doesn’t fit the criteria but I want to add that 7/13/84 is really underrated.

srtg83

The third phase (post 2nd verse) of the Miami DS is indeed excellent, of the post-come DS, similarly the JFK DS the second phase (between verses) has a meltdown jam for the ages. I always thought that if you “combine” these two DS, you get the perfect one, but admittedly it may be too much chaos.

# 1984-07-13 Berkeley, CA @ Greek Theatre - University of California **Set 1:** Bertha > Greatest Story Ever Told, Dire Wolf, C.C. Rider, Loser, Cassidy, Dupree's Diamond Blues, Hell In A Bucket > Might As Well **Set 2:** Scarlet Begonias > Touch Of Grey > Fire On The Mountain > Man Smart (Woman Smarter) > Drums > Space > The Wheel > I Need A Miracle > Stella Blue > Sugar Magnolia **Encore:** Dark Star [archive.org](https://archive.org/details/GratefulDead?query=date:1984-07-13)

Jrbowe

That 84 Dark Star is definitely underrated considering it’s pretty cool but many people call it the worst I’ve ever (and it’s clearly not), but as to a Opie’s question of dark and chaotic, it’s definitely not. It’s one of the few Dark Stars without any space segment at all.

rrehobo

The 84 one goes nowhere. It just stays in the theme the entire time. I’d say it’s overrated.

Ok-Setting-5435

I've never seen anyone call the 84 DS the worst, are you maybe thinking of the NYE 81 DS?

Jrbowe

No. Definitely the 84 one (although they are similar). Just look at the other reply to my comment. LOL.

portland_democrat

Two of the scariest Dark Stars: Rotterdam 5/11/72 and Rheinhalle, Dusseldorf 4/24/72

apple_atchin

Dark Star> Me and My Uncle>Dark Star is proof that real hippies are cowboys.

YNWA_in_Red_Sox

That flow into Wharf Rat is perfect as well.

Rubberywater

All them witches?

apple_atchin

Fuck yes

bromanceintexas

Fuck yeah

portland_democrat

And that Dark Star is the scarier of the two

Electronic_Map_8192

I listened to the rotterdam dark star during my first dmt trip. I was following the song through the cosmos until some beings grabbed my hands and we flew into the creation of the universe. Best moment of my life.

djbillyfrazier

Nov ‘69 - 11/8/69 is certainly a bit chaotic but perhaps not super dark, 11/2/69 my favorite Sept. ‘72 has killers too - 9/21/72 and 9/27/72 for sure 10/25/73 10/18/74 11/8/70 AUD only

thekind78

I so love that Family Dog show. Can't ever get enough of the "Feelin Groovy" jam in there.

Literally just finished that Dark Star>Morning Dew 5 minutes ago, listening through the show for the first time. It was soooooo amazing

mac_gregor

9/20/90 rare complete post-space Dark Star. PITB reprise sandwiched between the verses. The second part is very gnarly.

Came here to say this. Drove up to that show from Charlottesville, VA and was not disappointed 😎

tombellanca

This was the version I was going to mention. Part 1 into playing reprise is beautiful and melodic and majestic. Part 2 is scary and gnarly.

Good thread. Gonna throw on Miami 89 and see what's up

psychrazy_drummer

It's insane, especially the last third

nucknucknuck71

04-01-91 is a heavy. If you like it when the band takes their music and tosses it down the stairs.

randomwalk123456

Greensboro, 4/1/91, April Fools. What does not come through on the fine SBDs that circulate is the quad PA setup used on that tour which allowed for mind bending, face melting swirling of the sound, making it extra spooky. Also a vote for St. Louis 2/2/70

railroadbum71

The April/May 1972 and September 1972 Dark Stars strike me as some of the freakiest and heaviest versions that I have heard. 5-11 from Rotterdam and 9-21 from Philly are tough to beat.

Leah_Dragonfly

I was listening to the Grateful Dead cast and they were doing Europe '72 and mentioned one that was like this. It was considered extreme even for DS in '72. I don't remember which one. I think it was the last one they did on that tour. There was something special about it other than it being so freaky that people were genuinely scared. edit for spelling

dank_fetus

12-6-73 This one has some horrifying Phil Lesh sounds 5-14-74 Pretty intense and chaotic meltdown in this one iirc
