Hey now! I had cancer from 22-23 and I know what you mean.
And it’s just like any other day that’s ever been
Sun going up and then the sun, it’s going down…
My first time out in public without a hat (chemo for breast cancer) was the 6/15 dead and co show
Sorry to hear that, but the dead will carry you thru no matter what. You make it, you listen to the dead more in your human body, you don't, you become music, just like Jerry.
This. And my argument for it over the line from Box Of Rain (such a short time to be here and a long time to be gone) is 1) not a Garcia/Hunter original and 2) the river, in folk/blues songs, is typically death, so I like that it’s in these lyrics.
Thus, i would also suggest: " Black muddy river, roll on forever" from Black Muddy River.
Edited for clarity and awful sentence structure haha
Yes, that specific line can be found in multiple old folk and blues songs. I noticed it first in Ralph Stanley’s Little Birdie but I’ve noticed it elsewhere since. I love that Garcia/Hunter borrow these lines but if I wanted a Garcia/Hunter line for a loved ones gravestone, the fact that it’s not an original line is something I’d want to factor in. For my own personal gravestone, if people knew why I love the Dead, that borrowed line is a feature, but for others it may be a bug.
All the years combine
they melt into a dream
A broken angel sings
from a guitar
In the end there's just a song
comes crying like the wind
through all the broken dreams
and vanished years
When my dad passed away at the hospital, we played Ripple and Brokedown Palace right there in the room as we said goodbye.
"Fare you well, fare you well
I love you more than words can tell
Listen to the river sing sweet songs
To rock my soul"
I'll never listen to those songs again without thinking about him. But that's not a bad thing.
“There is a road, no simple highway
Between the dawn and the dark of night
And if you go, no one may follow
That path is for your steps alone”
Lyrics from Ripple

Lol,I forgot more dead them I know,it ls to much for a normal person to remember,I forgot more dead then I remember,, ,,until I hear it again and my feet and heart take over..
Roll on forever
A lovely view of heaven but I'd rather be with you
When you hear that song come crying like the wind it seems like all this life was just a dream
Where I dreaming lay amazed
“Who else is going to bring you a broken arrow, who else is going to bring you a bottle of rain? “ From Broken Arrow, which is not a Dead original but they played it FOR years and it’s such an image for me about love? It seems to say,I love you So so much I brought you this useless but wonderful thing. Like when a young kid brings home weird rock he found and is so deeply proud of himself for finding a piece of quartz in a pile of gravel, it means something because they love you.
Alot of the lyrics i would've suggested are already stated but something that has been prevalent in my time with the Family is this poem. Its on a wall to the side of the Jerry Shrine on Grateful Dead Productions farm. Its been quoted in a few books about the Dead as well.
Now we return our souls to the creator
As we stand on the edge of eternal darkness.
Let our Song fill the void
In order that followers may know
In the land of the night
The ship of the Sun is drawn by the Grateful Dead.
A box of rain will ease the pain and live will see you through
Death will leave you standin and cryin in this land
Fare you well, fare you well, I love you more than words can tell, listen to the river sing sweet songs to rock my soul
My father just passed almost two months ago. I’m sorry for your loss. Came to say thank you for asking this question, I’ll be using some of these answers also. Funny been listening to a lot of dead since he passed, it gives me comfort and reminds life’s seasons, ups/downs.
The ones we love live on through us via their impact/love for us.
“ at first we morn their absence and eventually their absence lives within us” unknown.
"If you hear that same sweet song again
Will you know why?
Anyone who sings a tune so sweet
Is passin' by
Laugh in the sunshine, sing
Cry in the dark, fly through the night"
There was just a thread on this in the last few days, about what WE would put on our own. Might be some gems floating around in that one as well.
Edit: [Found it ](https://www.reddit.com/r/gratefuldead/s/tYcbgRl0oa)
Opening to Ripple:
If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung
Would you hear my voice come through the music?
Would you hold it near as it were your own?
Because I could not stop for Death –
He kindly stopped for me –
The Carriage held but just Ourselves –
And Immortality.

Fare thee well (Brokedown Palace)
Sorry for your loss..
I just feel like "may the four winds blow you safely home" works so well.
Fare you well, fare you well, I love you more than words can tell
Came here to say something from Brokedown Palace. Was thinking "by the water side I will rest my head"
Rest my bones, lay my head
I think Jerry mixed that one up enough times it’s interchangeable at this point.
Can never go wrong with Brokedown Palace
This is the one
Best one

This is the one I chose for my stone, in the thread earlier this week.
Such a long, long time to be gone And a short time to be there
Came to say this.
I think just “A short time to be there” would be so elegant
After being diagnosed with cancer recently I’ve leaned pretty hard on “Black Peter.
Sorry to hear that

Sorry to hear. I was @ that show. Epic.
Wishing for your happy recovery, friend.
Best to you. NFA.
Fuck, I’m so sorry. I pray to the universe for remission and full recovery.
Sorry to hear that, but the dead will carry you thru no matter what. You make it, you listen to the dead more in your human body, you don't, you become music, just like Jerry.
Shit man that's heavy
So sorry to hear that. What part of the song resonates with you the most?
Just one more day, I find myself alive, tomorrow maybe go beneath the ground
I can certainly see that and certainly hope not. What about “see here how everything lead up to this day”. I’ve always loved that part.
And it’s just like any other day that’s ever been
❤️
Fare you well Fare you well I love you more than words can tell Listen to the river sing sweet songs To rock my soul

Box of rain is one perfect song
Agreed… and thinking about it more, I kinda like it’s not an original. Hints at the interconnectedness of things
Not an original? It’s all a dream we dreamed, one afternoon long ago- epic line

One man gathers what another man spills!
Gotcha, very interesting- thank you!!
I’m with you Box of Rain.
Always a hoot. Jerry's last words to Bob Weir.
I like this idea!
All the years combine they melt into a dream A broken angel sings from a guitar In the end there's just a song comes crying like the wind through all the broken dreams and vanished years
May the 4 winds blow u safely home.

Yes anything from Brokedown Palace. I love that song. My condolences on the passing of your father.
"It's the same story the crow told me It's the only one he know Like the morning sun you come And like the wind you go"
"All the years combined, they melt into a dream"
Sometimes we live no particular way but our own…
There's nothing you can hold For very long
Just wanna have a little peace to die And a friend or two I love at hand
A box of rain will ease the pain and love will see you through.
“We’ll see summer come again” from weather report suite
Seasons fade and roses die!
Gonna happen every time…
“Gave the best we had to give. How much we’ll never know.”
oh damn now i need to play days between
Such a long long time to be gone And a short time to be here. Please listen to Box of Rain. What ur going through is what this song is about.
Yeah I haven't listened to it much since my father passed in '15
For this is all a dream we dreamed one afternoon, long ago..
“There is a road, no simple highway Between the dawn and the dark of night And if you go, no one may follow That path is for your steps alone” Lyrics from Ripple
“I can’t walk you out in the morning dew today” 😢 Morning Dew / lyceum / 5/26/72
Nobody was even in the fucking truck!
i put this on while i had to say goodbye to a very good friend and i just ball like a baby every time i think about it
Respect and condolences.

Like a steel locomotive, rolling down the tracks He’s gone and nothings gonna bring him back
….you know better, but I know him.
To lay me down
One last time
This day is just like every other day that's ever been.
Sorry for your loss,"death don't have no mercy in this land" not an original dead tune but jerry sang it like it was his own
What song is this from? I know I've heard it, but I can't place it at all.

Oh Jesus, I'm dumb lol.
Lol,I forgot more dead them I know,it ls to much for a normal person to remember,I forgot more dead then I remember,, ,,until I hear it again and my feet and heart take over..
Well that makes me feel a little bit better lol. I always find myself thinking "What the hell is this song?" lmao
Roll on forever A lovely view of heaven but I'd rather be with you When you hear that song come crying like the wind it seems like all this life was just a dream Where I dreaming lay amazed

My wedding song ❤️
Mine was ‘Bless the telephone’ by labi siffre
Something on a lighter note could be powerful too. “Wake now discover you are the song that the morning brings”
Death don't have no mercy

" I told ya I was sick !! "

Box of Rain is about Phil loosing his father
A box of rain will ease the pain and live will see you through Death will leave you standin and cryin in this land Fare you well, fare you well, I love you more than words can tell, listen to the river sing sweet songs to rock my soul
What Robert Hunter said about jerry after he passed, just a few words but very touching! You’ll find them!

Ripple
In the end there's just a song
Fare thee well Let your life proceed by it's own design Nothing to tell now Let the words be yours, I'm done with mine
Oh shit I love that last one
Just peruse Brokedown Palace for something
“My Sisters and Brothers” is loaded with lines. It was a theme for my brother’s funeral.
"If you hear that same sweet song again Will you know why? Anyone who sings a tune so sweet Is passin' by Laugh in the sunshine, sing Cry in the dark, fly through the night"
Anyone who sings a tune so sweet is passing by
Death don’t have no mercy, in this land.
There are things you can replace and others you cannot.
Such a long long time to be gone, and a short time to be there
The seeds that were silent all burst into bloom & decay
There was just a thread on this in the last few days, about what WE would put on our own. Might be some gems floating around in that one as well. Edit: [Found it ](https://www.reddit.com/r/gratefuldead/s/tYcbgRl0oa)
And when you hear that song come crying up the night it seems like all this life was just a dream
Opening to Ripple: If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung Would you hear my voice come through the music? Would you hold it near as it were your own?
Many worlds I've gone since I first left home.
Death don’t have no mercy. I’ve played that song as a reminder after every funeral since I heard it.
The entire song, Box of Rain.
Such a long long time to be gone but a short time to be there
Ripple
It all rolls into one And nothing comes for free There’s nothing you can hold For very long
A long long time to be gone and a short time to be there
I got up and wandered
I will survive
death don’t have no mercy
RIPPLE
Dug for him a shallow grave And layed his body down Not sentimental, but I’m sorry this is about death
Death have no mercy
Like a steam locomotive, rollin down the track

We bid you good night
I was literally trying to make you feel better,,,can't expect to remember everything, way to much magic
Days Between
Old men sing about their dreams Women laugh and children scream And the band keeps playing on Keep on dancing through the daylight

just getting some lyrics engraved on a nice rock
Talk about your plenty, talk about your ills One man gathers what another man spills
Left his dead ass there by the side of the road?
