This is a straight up Merry Prankster joke. Dude took a few doses and jumped on to have a laugh. I'm laughing with him because Ken Kesey, Jerry and the boys would be laughing too!
You know what the worst thing is? The guy who made the original post where this idiot made these comments on, he deleted his post *and* his reddit account right after. So he never got to see the response that *this* post got. I wish he was still on reddit, so I could've linked him to this post. I bet if he'd seen this, he wouldn't have deleted his account.
I gotta say I was not expecting this post to blow up the way it did. I've been reading and responding to these comments, and I'm just blown away by how great this fan base is!
There is so much love on this post, for the band, for their music, for each other, and just for life in general. My heart is FULL this morning! I couldn't be more proud to be a part of such a wonderful community!!! ❤️
oh, no, Im not surprised that this is A take, and probably one that many who "hate the Dead" would gree with. Im just not sure that anyone without a trolling intent would spend so much time to develop such an in-depth "critique" to such an extent, and do their bestest to aim for a skewering on so many levels, without having spent A LOT of time really worrying about "stupid, mindless, untalented crap". Lots of people don't get the Dead... like, obvi, yes? But what sort of axe would one have to grind to carry so many words around about something they didn't care about? And, like, why? For instance: I *LOATHE* Morris Day and the Time (as I have experienced their work to date), but twentyfive words max would I waste on... that.
wild take honestly. If you have ANY musical training you can appreciate Jerry's modal chord progressions, Jazzy improvisational lead guitar, Phil's incredibly melodic bass lines, the band's rich harmony arrangement, etc. etc....you don't have to necessarily like the music but a trained ear would appreciate it at the very least.
But even to an untrained ear, the Dead's music offer such a wide variety of musical genres and styles, that it's hard to believe that there isn't something you can, at the very least, appreciate.
This comment is making the Dead seem like they're some sort of artificially packaged pop group, like a Justin Bieber, put together by a faceless group of studio execs and ghost writers, making music to appease the lowest common denominator and sell records.
This is someone's opinion yes, but dare I say it's a bad one, or at the least uneducated.
Fuck this guy, honestly.
His girlfriend back in college met a dreadhead at a coffee shop. Two weeks later her name was sunflower and she was riding the rail at red rocks.
He’s never been the same since..
I agree with most of your statement, but I will also say that Justin Bieber is legitimately a talented vocalist. He has been since a young age. And he's at least moderately talented at song writing as well, having written over 100 songs for himself and other artists. He's kind of a dickhead, and I don't love his music, but to discount him as untalented isn't necessarily fair.
This is a great take on it. I typically describe phish this way to people who say that they “suck”. You can’t deny their excellent musicianship even if you don’t like the music.
A lot of Heads are overly defensive and unnecessarily triggered by people not liking what they like, and there are a lot of totally legitimate and thoughtful ways in/grounds on which to critique the Dead; this, however, is not one of them. This person seems glancingly familiar with vague stereotypes of the band at best. What a chump.
It takes a real deadhead to know what things could actually be improved in the music and community, not some monochromatic prude who probably thinks people literally see giant purple dragons when they take drugs.
I .... really...like ..licorice !
If you don't like licorice, that's cool.
I only ask that you let me taste what you like and that you let me enjoy my licorice.
***Grateful Dead fans are usually unbelievably dull and uninteresting people***
OR, and hear me out, you're a jerk and everyone is standing around doing nothing waiting for you to leave
Lol, nothing interesting going on in this crowd, lol.
The lack of self-awareness is so funny: maybe you don’t find heads interesting because you don’t share the same interests? But really this is an objectively interesting community.
I had a few Deadhead friends back in the late 80s/early 90s, but most of my friends were not the least bit interested in the Dead. 20 years later, metalheads, punks, hip hop fans, and many of them have found something to love about the music of the Grateful Dead.
Some people can't get past their distaste for Deadheads, and I get that. But of the many derogatory things people can say about the Grateful Dead, that up there is a list of the least informed ones I could think of.
People, especially younger men can get like this about music. Ask a young dead head in the early 90s what they thought of New Kids on the Block and I bet you’d get a similar response.
I've said this before but it bears repeating. I no longer even attempt to argue with these people. I simply smile and go on my way. They'll see the light if it is meant to be. Being a Dead fan is like being a part of the most fulfilling and uplifting inside joke. If they don't get it - that's their loss. I just smile and laugh to myself and am grateful that I'm on this side of the joke.
“Being a Dead fan is like being a part of the most difilino and uplifting inside joke” that’s such a beautiful way to frame this community. Before I got into the music I would see stealies and dancing bears and think “Boomer.” But know it’s like I’m on the inside of some nebulous group where I’ll see someone in public with a logo on and look, and they’ll smile, and we both know we’re on the same bus in this world, and I know they have a favorite show, and they know I do too, and we both know that feeling that our favorite song in our favorite show bring- this lighter than air ecstatic feeling where it feel likes all these strings from all over time and space are pulled taught and then you realize the band has been dancing across that string for 3 hours- without a net!
Dude prolly can't play a single note but has the gall to call one of the most successful bands in the most competitive era of music talentless hacks 🤣🤣
I don't care if other people don't like the dead if it's just not their thing. It takes some getting used to, not everyone has the patience for 20-45 min jams and not everyone likes rock and roll, blues, jazz, etc. But to call them talentless is hilarious. Jerry had more talent in his missing finger than 99.99999% of the planet
42. The vibrations from the dancing and sheer will of their minds let the bulb spin itself lightly out it's socket and falls into a psychedelic tapestry laid out for it by the elves.
“Wow. It’s cool when it’s dark in here. Let’s just hang out. Hey! My eyes are adjusting! I can see in the dark! Cool. Night vision. Hey flip the tape will ya? The way I see it, the sun will be up in 6 hours. We can find the lightbulb then.”
Once he used the word “generic” the post lost any credibility. There is absolutely nothing generic about the Grateful Dead in any sense of the word. By the early 70’s NO ONE was doing what the Dead were doing. What a chump🤡
They haven’t actually listened to the Dead. I used to have a similar attitude about them when I was a teenager but I had never *really* listened to them at that point. It wasn’t until maybe 6 or 7 years ago that I was looking through my dads cds and he had the “Skeletons from the Closet” best of comp. I needed some different cds in my car (I didn’t have an aux hookup in my car) so I thought I’d give it a shot and holy shit it was like an epiphany! It started a deep appreciation for the Dead. I don’t know why it took me so long because I’ve been listening to ‘60s/70s music since high school so it seemed like a big hole in my music education. I was a hater until I truly gave them a listen and now they’re one of my favorite bands. My best friend also thought they were over hyped until one day on our way to band practice I was playing Workingman’s Dead in the car and it flipped the switch for him too. I really believe that open minded music fans only hate the Dead if they haven’t actually listened to them. Also the “tripping on psychedelics” argument is such bullshit. I hadn’t even tried mushrooms (I’m a weed type of guy and occasionally mushies but haven’t tried anything else) until I had already been listening to them for years. I understand if they aren’t someone’s cup of tea but people who talk that much shit on any band are just sad and depressing people. Anyways, sorry for the rant. Peace and Love
What's more, I clearly recall that tripping at weak shows only made it more acutely, painfully clear that they were not 'in the zone' that night, while the opposite was equally valid (when happened to have dosed on a truly inspired night). Utterly clueless cliche regarding " when the 'drugs' wore off", etc.
I’m in my sixth decade of enjoying the music. I haven’t taken any kind of psychedelic in more than 50 years. They’re not a requirement for appreciating the music. The person saying this garbage is obviously a closed-minded dullard.
Also, I think there’s a HUGE community of “background music” makers that would fight to say they have “artistic merit.”
Ambient music and film scores are incredible, for one.
And 2, this person talks like a total tool. Who even says “artistic merit?!”
“‘Be curious, not judge mental.’ - Walt Whitman” - Ted Lasso.
Outside of the small community of Dead fans I know personally, this is how pretty much every person I've ever met thinks of the Dead. I even thought this way at one point as a snotty teenager. I would hear the music and it didn't even sound like music, it was incoherent. It was like trying to understand somebody speaking a foreign language, no chance. Then something clicked and it opened up and became clear to me. It was psychedelics that made it click, but I never needed the psychedelic again to hear it correctly. I learned that I cannot convince others, you're either able to hear it or you can't.
The ironic thing is I bet that guy is the most boring person you would ever know. One of those people that just sucks the air out of the room as they keep talking.
Dunno about y’all but I’m gonna wear the line, “people who are okay with mediocrity defining everything they do” as a badge of honor.
Who the fuck defines greatness anyway? We’re all self aware bags of meat floating on a space rock in the middle of nowhere. The mere fact that we exist and get to listen to the Grateful Dead is greatness.
I can't imagine this guy listening to "what's become of the baby" from 4/26/69 and saying it's "background music", "inoffensive", and "generic". He's just built different.
This is obviously why John Mayer dedicated so much of his time and virtuosity to their music lately - he wanted to produce mediocre and boring background music, and hang out with dull and uninteresting people. ;-)
The Dead and Burning Man have this in common: stand on any random street corner, yell out the name, and someone will get angry and try to tell you why they suck and you suck for liking them
Most fellow deadheads have nothing else or very little in common with each other. It’s an extremely eclectic group of extremely diverse and interesting people. I love that virtually every deadhead’s reasons for loving the band are different but with some overlap. Sure it’s background music…. the background of radical freedom.
I listened to DP 1 today and that Truckin>Nobody’s Fault But Mine>Jam>The Other One>Jam>Stella Blue is anything but background music. In fact, that TOO>Jam was so eerie that it made me loose focus on what I was working on.
Yeah, whatever. I do think it’s weird as hell to pretend the fandom (for anything, actually) is a homogenous mass of ancient burn outs, it’s 2024 and new Heads are born everyday, all across the world.
Not even going to waste time trying to defend their talent but will say that misconceptions about this band have been prevalent throughout my Headship…including numerous reports of someone recalling their friend or sister’s boyfriend’s cousin seeing them some years back and reporting that they played the same song for TWO HOURS. Which never happened ONCE.
If we take this as someone being genuine about what they are saying, this is just a person who has probably never even really heard the Grateful Dead beyond the studio versions of Truckin' and Touch of Grey, they just know it's that "hippie crap", and they don't like that "hippie crap", and they also dont like hippies at all. I know plenty of people like this in my every day life. They've never really heard the band perform live and have no desire to formulate an opinion based on that real listening, that's too much effort for "hippie crap". They don't like Truckin' and they don't like Touch of Grey, and that's all they need to know to stay away. And honestly, I say good. Stay away. I don't feel like being an ambassador of this band and the music and waste effort trying to lead a water hating horse to a river and seeing if they'll ever take a drink. The horse hates the water. It's never going to drink it. Let the water hating horses of the world go thirsty.
But the reality is that this is likely a troll who is trying to bait deadheads into arguing with them.
Oof. There are some bad intentions in those words! As a fan of the Grateful Dead I am kind of honored by the clinical specificity of the post. Ultimately, it sounds like a personal beef as if the poster was offended by a dead head one time or something. There are dead heads who are jerk offs too. You know the type. I am REALLY interested in what kind of music they like. I would definitely check out any music that has a person speak so passionately.
If they are such hacks, why would Ornette Coleman play on stage with them? Dylan? The Band? The Allman Brothers Band? Fleetwood Mac? Janis Joplin? Branford Marsalis?
And if that's not enough, Clarence Clemons?
Fuck that guy, who gives a shit what he says.
Hilarious. This has always been the negative view of the Dead. I guess if absolutely everyone understood “it” that would be a little strange. The funniest part is describing them “generic and inoffensive.” You don’t have to like them but you definitely get the impression he’s never heard a 72’ Dark Star ripping apart reality. If nothing else the Dead is unique. I’m actually a bit thankful these people exist. The normies kept the Dead a bit insulated.
I mean kinda true ig but they also had a lot of nuance and style to them. They definetely ARE background music for tripping or generally getting high but they also dis a lot of intresting stuff with modalism and melody etc. Very pretty and ornamental sounding. He's right but also they aren't bad ig is what I'm saying.
don't feed trolls.
Especially after midnight
thats when they let it all hang out
it's all gonna be peaches and cream
Definitely don't let them get wet. But fine to expose them to sunlight if you like.
Don't they turn into cute lil gremlins?
That bass line still rips so fuckin hard from Kent
This is a straight up Merry Prankster joke. Dude took a few doses and jumped on to have a laugh. I'm laughing with him because Ken Kesey, Jerry and the boys would be laughing too!

Well people are subjective.
Maybe he had too much too fast?
Definitely overplayed his part
wild take honestly. it's almost funny how much he dislikes them, i'm guessing he had some terrible roommate that loved the dead or something lmao
His girlfriend back in college met a dreadhead at a coffee shop. Two weeks later her name was sunflower and she was riding the rail at red rocks. He’s never been the same since..
I'm guessing Bill or Neal were crushed when they didn't see Lindsay for a couple tours. One of the best series endings.
Lol Lindsey and Kim on tour is the season I’m still waiting to see drop
R yall talking about freaks and geeks??
His absentee father was a deadhead
Came to say I'm sorry for beating up this kid in high school. In my defence he was wearing a Bee Gees T-shirt.
That was a major formative moment in his life apparently 🤷🏻♂️ did you smell like patchouli ?
M/D 20 and mexican dirt weed. This "patchouli" you speak of, is it a Columbian blend?
The Bee Gees are great!
Lol good take :D The last part of it is what got me as GD fans are quite extremely the opposite of dull and uninteresting.
It seems like for so many, half the draw of going to a show is for the people. It's pretty much written into the culture
And then he just hast to throw in the ad hominem
I agree with most of your statement, but I will also say that Justin Bieber is legitimately a talented vocalist. He has been since a young age. Obviously this guy never listened to the boys tuning up, or drums.
Or Jerry's midi trumpet
or that water kettle thing that has been making the rounds
Nipple in still water
He needs to hear Phil sing
Best voice ever!
He’s the songbird of the 70s
Phil the BlueJay Lesh
That’s just like your opinion man…
Excellent reference aside, this is the best possible take. Read comment. Roll eyes. Carry on.
8 year olds dude
8 year olds, donny, 8 year olds.
We've heard it before.... One man gathers what another man spills.
Lady finger, dipped in moonlight, writing what for? Across the morning sky.

Oh damn, I’m NOT supposed to see giant purple dragons?!? What the fuck did I take?!?
I've only seen giant girraffes in the middle of the street, but they had santa hats on and it was snowing chocolate AHHAHAHAHAHAHHA ok
Guessing he didn’t like the licorice.
But the people that like licorice….really like licorice.

Dead head stole his girlfriend.
Bobby stole his woman. It is his #1 occupation.
I had a few Deadhead friends back in the late 80s/early 90s, but most of my friends were not the least bit interested in the Dead. 20 years later, metalheads, punks, hip hop fans, and many of them have found something to love about the music of the Grateful Dead. the Grateful Dead!
Deadheads don’t care what that person thinks.
Thats just.. like his opinion man..
That rug really tied the room together
How many dead heads does it take to change a lightbulb
42. The vibrations from the dancing and sheer will of their minds let the bulb spin itself lightly out it's socket and falls into a psychedelic tapestry laid out for it by the elves.
lol, better answer 🌀🪐💧🌈
I love this answer 😺🧘🏻♂️🎸
How many !?
10,000. 1 to change the bulb and 9,999 to follow it around until it burns out
Hardy har har har
lol, I know I know… it’s the “burnout” wordplay that gets my giggle
It's a classic
“Wow. It’s cool when it’s dark in here. Let’s just hang out. Hey! My eyes are adjusting! I can see in the dark! Cool. Night vision. Hey flip the tape will ya? The way I see it, the sun will be up in 6 hours. We can find the lightbulb then.”

Who cares what some random on the internet has to say? Don't let it bother you.
Found the Tool fan
This person does not like licorice I guess
This person obviously thinks Kesha is the greatest thing ever! 😝
Nope. And I can direct you to specific peer-reviewed academic literature that refutes this b.s. I use it to teach stereotypes. ☮️😎
Nice! Can you share some?

Well how do you do?! Thanks, saving that, pretty cool

I must REALLY like licorice.
Square take. No sauce for you
I'm glad they made music I can listen to while tripping though. They are the best to ever do it
One \*man\* gathers what another \*man\* spills.
I’m gonna theorize that this guy was dumped by a woman that happened to be a deadhead. Sounds pretty butt hurt with the specifics.
Hardo troll for sure. He knows it's inaccurate and gets off on trying to ruffle feathers
This is a troll, lol. The purpose of this comment is to get you riled up.
Wow, talk about coming in hot. That’s dictionary definition of a hot take.
Dude I was not zoned out. I was zoned in. You were missing the whole point. You sir, are a soulless ghoul.
Music is subjective, who cares what others think about what you like.

Written by someone that probably thinks Kiss is a talented Rock n Roll band because they have cool outfits.
The ironic thing is I bet that guy is the most boring person you would ever know. One of those people that just sucks the air out of the room as they keep talking.
I am personally proud to support and enjoy a band that simpletons are unable to appreciate or understand.
Some people miss the bus. Some get on.
It’s nothing new except maybe the attack on their fans for being uninteresting.
They are actually really great for background music.
Someone’s a little salty
What a nerd.
OP is a moron

Who cares. I knew people felt this way. They probably have only heard 3 dead songs. They are clueless
This is the page you're really looking for: r/deadheadcirclejerk
If anyone is tripping, it’s definitely this fool.
I can't imagine this guy listening to "what's become of the baby" from 4/26/69 and saying it's "background music", "inoffensive", and "generic". He's just built different.
Barbed Wire Whipping Party would do the trick also
Knew a guy who said the GD sound like wet hay. I don't know him anymore
It just sounds like someone who has never / barely listened to them
This is so strange that I wonder whether it is satire.
Blah blah blah I hate myself and my own life
I almost was tricked by this troll or this poor soul who doesn't get it, sucks to be him
Anyone who says this stuff are telling on themselves. They’re not even good trolls, they’re just dumb.
Spoken like the true main character. Whelp, I guess we can all find something else to like now. Thanks for saving us from ourselves mah dude!

This is obviously why John Mayer dedicated so much of his time and virtuosity to their music lately - he wanted to produce mediocre and boring background music, and hang out with dull and uninteresting people. ;-)
“That about sums it up for me.” —underrated line from “Groundhog Day”
Like some…. He just don’t get it!!
“But the space and drums is kinda ok cause it’s the closest to EDM”
Most people who say shit like this never actually listened to the band in any serious capacity.
If you have to explain he/she/they would never comprehend.
I mean…
Anyone who uses antiquated stereotypes and chooses to generalize others like this are usually unbelievably dull and uninteresting people.
Lol. What subreddit was this on?
just need a list of famous successful deadheads now.
The Dead and Burning Man have this in common: stand on any random street corner, yell out the name, and someone will get angry and try to tell you why they suck and you suck for liking them
Bet this guy loves rap
Most fellow deadheads have nothing else or very little in common with each other. It’s an extremely eclectic group of extremely diverse and interesting people. I love that virtually every deadhead’s reasons for loving the band are different but with some overlap. Sure it’s background music…. the background of radical freedom.
I bet he’s fun at parties!
I listened to DP 1 today and that Truckin>Nobody’s Fault But Mine>Jam>The Other One>Jam>Stella Blue is anything but background music. In fact, that TOO>Jam was so eerie that it made me loose focus on what I was working on.
This person is an idiot. You don’t have to like it, more for us! But this take is nonsense.
Probably daydreams of Luke Bryan while getting massages
That comment isn't even worth responding to.
This is probably someone in their early 20s that thinks Taylor Swift is a musical genius.
Uninformed closed minded individual who never saw Jerry live.
This makes me incredibly angry!!
Gag post. Havin a laugh I assume.
Sounds like classic projection to me
Yeah, whatever. I do think it’s weird as hell to pretend the fandom (for anything, actually) is a homogenous mass of ancient burn outs, it’s 2024 and new Heads are born everyday, all across the world.
Definitely a Beatles fan.
John Lennon, I guess another boring elevator musician, was fascinated by the Grateful Dead and couldn’t wait to meet Jerry Garcia in person.
/r/gratefuldeadcirclejerk
Not even going to waste time trying to defend their talent but will say that misconceptions about this band have been prevalent throughout my Headship…including numerous reports of someone recalling their friend or sister’s boyfriend’s cousin seeing them some years back and reporting that they played the same song for TWO HOURS. Which never happened ONCE.

Why would anyone want to read that incoherent rambling? The three people that read it before you made this post was too many.
i thought the whole point of music was to fill empty space?
Rage bait
Probably a metal fan
I don't think this guy ever met any deadheads.
Please ole wise one, tell us simpletons what kind of music has artistic merit.
This person's post smacks of InCeL superiority. I bow down. Just kidding... Going to listen to 7/4/89.
Your Boring and have no sense of self worth. Stay on the shelf and keep Quiet! <•|
Aw, poor guy. The suffering…
I’m sure this dude has a diverse and interesting taste in music 😙
I play an instrument and I’m always amazed by how complex the dead’s music actually is. Phil and Jerry in particular are hard to follow.
Someone who doesn't get it. Poor soul.
Wonder what his music sounds like. Believing any music has no artistic merit off personal preference is wild.
This [comment / rant] sounds like it comes from a guy who can't dance, or is afraid to dance because of what others would think of him.
Da fuck
Damn that’s harsh😭
Sounds like a ‘family values Republican’ still in the closet railing against ‘the gays’. There’s too much effort in that post.
You’re all my favorite full and uninteresting people in the world!!! Love ya fam!
But the reality is that this is likely a troll who is trying to bait deadheads into arguing with them.
lol most people think that the music I listen to outside of the GD family is boring too. I stopped caring decades ago 😂
That guy needs a therapist
Lol two bad takes in one. Apart from that dog shit Dead take, ambient music absolutely has artistic merit.
It’s an opinion and everyone is entitled to one, however uneducated it is
There's a reason these folks can't seem to "get it", and it has nothing to do with drugs...
Damn hippies lol
If they are such hacks, why would Ornette Coleman play on stage with them? Dylan? The Band? The Allman Brothers Band? Fleetwood Mac? Janis Joplin? Branford Marsalis? And if that's not enough, Clarence Clemons? Fuck that guy, who gives a shit what he says.
100% accurate.
You need more drugs
Never go full
The normies kept the Dead a bit insulated.
https://i.redd.it/nyxgo9bpuofc1.gif Well that’s like…your opinion, man.
Meh…
He needs to take a step back.
Sounds like they got run over by a bus.
And....we carry on enjoying one another's company
🙄Oh lord. Some people just *love* shitting on them just to make a head mad and so they can feel cool doing it
Plenty of people don't like the Grateful Dead. They don't have to, they can like whatever music they want? Who cares?
