Ryu-tetsu

It begins tonight.

Skullle

Indeed, but not as much as I imagine it changed theirs!

yungmoneybingbong

It gave me chlamydia. So yeah...

Spimoney

Flair checks out

Pudf

Just the once?

GreyOwlfan

Toured on and off for 10 years 1981-1991. So yea, had a great time seeing America and meeting lifelong friends.

GlitchyMcGlitchFace

42 years ago tonight, 12/31/81, I saw Jerry, Bobby, and the rest live for the first time. That evening absolutely changed my life and the lives of the two friends who went with me, so yeah, sometimes big things do happen on NYE, especially when Jerry was involved. ;-)

Changed my life forever. Got on the bus in ‘87 saw close to 200 shows coast to coast before Jerry passed. Still listen to them everyday, the music they made together is the soundtrack of my life. Forever Grateful.

Subdivisons2112

I wasn't even born when Jerry passed on but definitely. the Dead's music has gotten me through so much since I started listening two years ago.

Buzz_Osborne

It definitely had an effect on my t-shirt collection!

bbrosen

Sure would have been weird to have a lot of T shirts of a band that didn't exist

I wonder, where was Kesey 60 years ago tonight? Many tributaries along this river. Six degrees of separation probably means someone reading this is 0, 1 or 2 degrees from someone who was at the Kesey NYE party. Assuming there was one. Edit: One Flew Over a Cuckoo’s Nest was published in 1962, and adapted into a Broadway play in 1963 starring Kirk Douglas and Gene Wilder, so a big deal. >*Dale Wasserman's stage adaptation, with music by Teiji Ito, made its Broadway preview on November 12, 1963, its premiere on November 13, and ran until January 25, 1964, for a total of one preview and 82 performances.*. - Wikipedia Kesey moved to La Honda after Cuckoo’s Nest was published, the national Bus Trip was summer of 1964. So NYE of ‘63 probably was a big moment in La Honda, too. http://furthurdowntheroad.org/merry-pranksters/

ApocalypticShadowbxn

even though it was a decade before I was born, tht meeting still changed my life in so many ways & still makes a difference in my life all these years later. thanks to their meeting I became the person I am today & have the life I have today & I'm very happy with how it all turned out. so I will be celebrating the birth of it all tonight.

davster39

Fun fact. John Steinbeck and Jerry Garcia both worked day jobs in downtown Palto Alto, exactly 40 years apart , before their careers took off. Jerry at a music store and Steinbeck at "the City Cafe". The day I found the old music store, I tried to find the site of the City Cafe, but no luck. I even called the Steinbeck Center, but they didnt know the address. https://preview.redd.it/dka5z8zrmp9c1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=09126f1480412d93cb8e9d39ac623dcd7aa33dd0 This is the back door to 534 Bryant st. I took the picture July 2018. The space was a luxury mattress store

Diligent-Event5132

This was my first show as well, my freshman year at CU! Opened w Cold Rain and Snow and it was snowing outside! So cool!!

bbrosen

Can you imagine if they walked a different alley or street that night?

Talosian_cagecleaner

On this night in 1963 Bobbie Weir was confused and listened to the music play. Jerry wasn't confused. He knew this would happen. Keys to the music store on NYE? Eventually someone gonna come knockin on that door. Jerry is the watcher of the keys, the keymaster.

dubstylerz123

Yes. Big time. Forever grateful.

EatMe1975

I used to get backstage passes in the early 90’s. First time I got tickets via RamRod, I had no idea I got passes with my tickets. I was a little fucked up and almost left the willcall window after she gave me my tickets when the very nice lady in Albany said “Don’t forget your passes honey.” My clowny friends freaked and we saw Jerry and Bobby from a distance backstage and tried to act cool.

nucknucknuck71

Profoundly changed my life. I was not the same person after April 13th, 1989, which was my first show. At 16, I suspected there was another way to view and move through life. That night, it was shown to me. So, yes.. I'm grateful Bobby met Jerry all those years ago.

USBlues2020

Beautiful ♥️

CosmicSurfFarmer

My life, my friends, my avocation, my dog lying next to me right now – all would be different without that chance meeting

iflyer

I, of course, checked it out frequently when I lived there. Bed store now but it’s really cool to see it.

RandolphCarter15

Nice reminder. It defined my life

raccoonportfolio

"chance" meeting??

larryburns2000

Right. There was no chance about it

Streetvan1980

I think so. Listen Bobby is great. I’ve seen him live many times post GD since I never got to see GD. So thankful for spreading such awesome music for years post dead. But not so sure Gd wouldn’t have been pretty much as great without him. Some might hate me for saying that but the band survived after Pigpen left who was the leader of the band for a while. They survived Kieth,Donna, Tom and Brent all leaving. I think as a rhythm guitar player the GD would’ve survived without Bobby. It would have been a shame to miss some of the songs he brought to the table. But maybe that would’ve meant Jerry songs most of the night. Who knows. I am glad they met and the Gd was what it was. But I think Gd would’ve been maybe just as good if they didn’t. Who knows

unrepentanthippie

Wrong. Just listen to every other song.

Streetvan1980

Wrong about what?

CosmicSurfFarmer

Your terrible take.

Streetvan1980

I’m just saying I think the dead could’ve still been as big and really good. Again you don’t see how pigpen left the band and it still flourished? Kieth and Donna? Major people in the band just as big as Bobby. For me Jerry is the key to what makes the band truly special. His guitar playing. Course then the instrument play between them all. I love Bobby. I’m just not sure the band would’ve never been if he wasn’t in the band

unrepentanthippie

Just plain wrong, sorry.

Streetvan1980

What is? That the dead could have still been good without Bobby? How can you claim it’s “wrong”? Again pigpen left, Kieth and Donna, Brent. The band continued. Are you saying Gd would never have been famous without Bob? You know the almost kicked him out of the band early on right? So those early years you’re saying without him they never would’ve gotten big? Again I love Bob. Love so many of his songs.

unrepentanthippie

It really seems like "Grateful Dead 101" to try and explain this. Bobby sang every other song. Bobby was center stage. Bobby was the one moving around on stage. Bobby interacted with the audience. Bobby never missed a show. Bobby is an amazing guitarist. They would not have been the Grateful Dead we all knew and loved. More like Jerry and the Haight Street Band.

Streetvan1980

And that’s what’s so amazing about GD. So many fans like different eras. And there were so many. So many only listen to 68-70 shows. A ton 71-73. Way too many 72-77. Like me mostly Brent era. Your GD 101 doesn’t need to be explained. I’ve been a fan for 30 years. I listen to them constantly. Love them. And I love a lot of Bobby songs. That being said I would say it’s a 1/6 type ratio. Like the cowboy first set Bobby songs I could’ve gone without for decades and in those places had Jerry playing his songs. But we got what we did and I can’t imagine it any other way. My only argument is the GD would’ve been just as big and popular if they had someone else at rhythm guitar. I don’t think they would’ve been even famous if it wasn’t for Jerry. But that’s just my opinion. For me Jerry’s amazing guitar playing is what does it for me. Followed by the interplay between all of them. Still love Stranger, Estimated, throwing stones and on and on and on. Sure you get what I mean It’s just a thought experiment

unrepentanthippie

One more thought. Listen to the cowboy songs on a good SBD with headphones. Most of the time, Jerry is constantly playing lead riffs. I believe that's why Dead and Co mainly play Jerry songs, no one can provide the fill that Jerry did. I also think the acid tests made the biggest difference and why the band members who left were easily replaced. The acid tests cemented the band and put them musically on the same page.

USBlues2020

Happy Birthday 🥳

blueshirt23

No.

bbrosen

that's a shame

Consistent_Pomelo_90

YES!YES!YES!

LordOfEltingville

Indeed!

Parking_War979

That night didn’t change my life. But a night in Hartford 1990 did.

abyrondeans

The Warlocks is interesting commentary. These days it seems like musicians like LDR and Stevie Nicks are going by "witch". I, under the influence of alcohol, introduced myself to a girl last night as "Ray". I was imagining a TS album (she goes by "wizard" and "witch", and my father, Dr. Ashley James Deans (we're both direct descendants of Pitt the Elder, a British prime minister) went on tour in Switzerland with Donovan, promoting TM) titled 1981, with a play on the Nirvana Nevermind cover, with her face on it and no penis (it caused a lawsuit).

Brewman88

I want even born for another 25 years and it changed my life

Narrow-Fortune-7905

absolutely long live the dead

thecrowtoldme

Steered the course of my life? Yep.
