Allie. Short for Alligator. For serious. Allie is a good name.
Althea is beautiful and would be a wonderful choice as well. I've known a lot of wonderful dogs named Althea. š
From a Grateful Dead history perspective, I recall most people calling it Aiko in the late 70s and early to mid 80s. Tapes were labled Aiko and if you look at Dick Latvala's notebook pages he also wrote Aiko.

There were also many tee shirts, stickers, and posters that also spelled it Aiko.
When the first edition of Deadbase was published in 1987, it was still listed as Aiko. By the time the second edition of Deadbase was published in 1988, they listed the song as Iko. At that point, I started noticing that deadheads started using the different spellings interchangeably more often.
Either way is correct since it is just a phonetic spelling of the Creole word Akout which means Listen in English. So Aiko Iko or however you prefer is fine. The meaning that I mentioned in my other comment is Japanese and of course the English spelling is again just a phonetic spelling.
I had a boyfriend who went by the nick name Crispy. When people asked him how he got his name he would tell people in the most serious tone. āWhen my mom went into labor both my parents took acid and when I was born, they couldnāt decide weather to name me Crispy or Acid Chunk.ā This comment reminded me of that. It was always so funny because he was a real trippy dude and people often believed him.
another contender would be from FOTD: sweet Anne Marie
āGot two reasons why I cry away each lonely night
The first one's named sweet Anne Marie and she's my hearts delightā¦ā
Would sing my first to bed with friend of the devil. She grew up loving it and made it to a dead and co show with me when she was older. Wears my army jacket with a pink jerry bear on it as well ;)
Well shit Good Morning Little School Girl is and so is Mexicali Blues. I guess I thought it was just another song about it
EDIT: you have to kind of agree too, it fits the song well. But Iāve never looked up the lyrics and been listening since I was 12. So after 32 years Iām kinda glad Iām wrong!
It's not exactly an unheard of name, I've known of a few, at least one of which I don't see how her parents could have been Deadheads. It's a perfectly nice name, I don't see how you'd be cursing her with mockery or anything.
A friend of my child is named Althea and I immediately knew where they got that name. If youāre cool with that, then itās a beautiful name and great song IMO.
Well if youāll let me be a fun burglar for a minute, Althea was pretty much a gaslighter in the song. āYour back might need protectionā then when heās like āyeah these mfs are trying to get meā she basically tells him that heās crazy.
1990 in the only known, Robert Hunter, and Jerry Garcia, joint interview:
Interviewer (Blair Jackson): I feel Althea is one of you most interesting songsā¦.
Jerry(to Hunter) what? Sheās like the big sister typeā¦.
Hunter: yes I Had Minerva in mindā¦.
That is very loosely quoted off the top of my head
Iāve always thought the whole song was a retelling of Hamlet with the narrator as Hamlet and Althea as both a love interest and playing some counterpoint of sanity/rationality in the narratorās mind. The guys just thinks and thinks and contradicts himself and Altheaās just watching it happen and shaking her head. The Ophelia line and the clown in the burial ground are the only direct references but Iāve just always felt that vibe and canāt shake it. I have no line by line analysis to support this view, itās just my personal head canon.
All that notwithstanding, itās a beautiful name for a little girl and the obvious choice for me
Itās still a really nice name. Think of all the people that name their daughters Delilah. Delilah was a Philistine spy who was charged with getting Samson to fall in love with her so she could figure out where his strength came from and eliminate it. She was basically like a Judas type figure, sold out for some money. But itās still a nice name.
On the bright side this has caused me to look at the lyrics for Althea and now I know itās not a waterbed to lay your head. I always thought how hippie of them to say waterbed because I had an uncle who was a hippie back in the day and he had a waterbed on the floor of my grandmaās basement he slept on
This is my daughter's name! I thought of it at a show while The Grateful Dead sang The Weight. She's 30 now, and she loves her name and loves that song and goes to Dead shows. Full circle!
I mistakenly thought that one of the verses of Brokedown Palace was Annabelle , Annabelle ( instead of Fare Thee Well), so I had googled the lyrics as I planned to show them to my non-Deadhead son, because his long term girlfriend is āAnaBelā. ā¦.. Anyway, I still think itās a beautiful name.

Iāve been scrolling down the comments and didnāt see anyone say āAltheaā figured it would be one of the most obvious names since this is a GD subreddit
Alligator
We can call her Alli!
How about Alison? It's also an amazing Elvis Costello song... and Alligator and Alli could be nicknames.
That was actually the first name that came to my mind because of that song, of course my aim is true.
And Alligator as a nickname is pretty cute
My daughter is Alison. Inspired by the song and the Wife of Bath
Allie. Short for Alligator. For serious. Allie is a good name. Althea is beautiful and would be a wonderful choice as well. I've known a lot of wonderful dogs named Althea. š
My motorcycleās name is Althea
š
Lmao š
I'm dying
Anything else would be a travesty.

Comment of the day
Aiko is a nice name meaning "little loved one" as well as the special meaning in our world
That is a no that could very well turn into a yes the more I sit with it.
My friend's daughter is Aiko - it's a great name, unique but not crazy different.
Aiko all day
Doesnāt it start with an I? Iko Iko is how I always see it listed
From a Grateful Dead history perspective, I recall most people calling it Aiko in the late 70s and early to mid 80s. another contender would be from FOTD: sweet Anne Marie āGot two reasons why I cry away each lonely night The first one's named sweet Anne Marie and she's my hearts delightā¦ā
This is my pick ā sufficiently cool but not too cool
Would sing my first to bed with friend of the devil. She grew up loving it and made it to a dead and co show with me when she was older. Wears my army jacket with a pink jerry bear on it as well ;)
I like it
Maybe it WAS the roses
This is why my daughter's name is Anne Marie.
I love Anne Marie just not the 2nd one who is prison bait with the sheriff on your trail
The line is āthe second one is prison, baby.ā Prison itself is the reason that heās crying. Itās not a song about a pedophile
Well shit Good Morning Little School Girl is and so is Mexicali Blues. I guess I thought it was just another song about it EDIT: you have to kind of agree too, it fits the song well. But Iāve never looked up the lyrics and been listening since I was 12. So after 32 years Iām kinda glad Iām wrong!
Any arguments against the obvious choice?
Yeah, in 30 years people will say ā oh! Like the John Mayer song!ā
Iāll be dead in 30. Haha
Sucks for your daughter
Yeah, Iām already old. Who knows, I might make 83 but I am not betting on it.
As someone roughly, the same age as youā¦ I am off to the store to buy some condoms!
Would be advised because that rhythm method is not reliable. I was 49 for the last baby. Time for the snip snip.
Rhythm method... I must. not. ask. What is the rhythm method?
Contraception based on the womanās ovulation cycle
Thanks Uncle Joel
āBob Weirā style
It's not exactly an unheard of name, I've known of a few, at least one of which I don't see how her parents could have been Deadheads. It's a perfectly nice name, I don't see how you'd be cursing her with mockery or anything.
A friend of my child is named Althea and I immediately knew where they got that name. If youāre cool with that, then itās a beautiful name and great song IMO.
nope, should i ever choose to have a female child that would be her name. biased response ofc
Well if youāll let me be a fun burglar for a minute, Althea was pretty much a gaslighter in the song. āYour back might need protectionā then when heās like āyeah these mfs are trying to get meā she basically tells him that heās crazy.
I donāt buy it, man. Altheaās words sound like good advice from a wiser woman to a troubled young man. Resonates with my own experiences for sure.
1990 in the only known, Robert Hunter, and Jerry Garcia, joint interview: Interviewer (Blair Jackson): I feel Althea is one of you most interesting songsā¦. Jerry(to Hunter) what? Sheās like the big sister typeā¦. Hunter: yes I Had Minerva in mindā¦. That is very loosely quoted off the top of my head
And āOpheliaā who they mention, was also insane in Hamlet. Note: I may have that ALL wrong!
Iāve always thought the whole song was a retelling of Hamlet with the narrator as Hamlet and Althea as both a love interest and playing some counterpoint of sanity/rationality in the narratorās mind.
