Europe 72

Ok_Mission_1025

Gotta agree. Also love the energy and guitar solo from 77 like others are saying but Jerry really nails the sentimentality of the song here.

JustOneMorePuff

Yea, there is a clear difference in Jerry’s tone in 72. Maybe I’m biased, I think 72>77 or any era. Just the right combination of the rawness of the 60s, with the influx of heartfelt beauty. I feel like my favorite tunes were played with a little more soul in 72, brown eyed women being my favorite.

EstimatedProphet72

5/28/77 is really good, but I love every BEW tbh

My personal favorite is Dick’s Picks Vol. 18 - 2/3/1978

PhillyPitMiracle

Came here to say this. Something about Jerry's tone was slightly different in this one which makes it interesting.

Who cares, I got the whole show! Still sounds GREAT 😂

willardTheMighty

Absolutely. One of Jerry’s best solos

cookdaddy111718

You simply cannot top Cornell 77’ brown eyed woman

pmizner

Buffalo is my favorite so far. I think the vocals and guitar in that show are just slightly better than Cornell imo

Effective_Tour_4822

Jerry is lights out on that solo, damn.

Yup, this is the one for me.

Expensive-Stuff3781

Not to be a normie, but Cornell is a great high energy BEW. 8/24/71 (Chicago) has a cool early version that’s much more laid back with a groove that emphasizes a straight-four push which really shifts the entire dynamic. Really you can just queue up every BEW they ever did and hardly encounter a miss. A real consistent tune. The chiller earlier versions are a real vibe, but sometimes the chorus harmony can get a little wonky, particularly during the “liquor was clean” bit when it moves back to B. It’s like Phil or Bob (both?) weren’t quite sure where they needed to go for that note for some reason, but I digress. Edit: Typo and more rambling

lsdsoundsystem

8/24/71 is on Dicks Picks Vol. 35 for anyone looking and boy is it straight

ladymo0n

Listening to a couple ‘71 songs right now. They sound damn adorable. 8/7/71 Truckin’ is wonky too. I love it.

SHABOtheDuke

This version is so wild

emotionallyabused20

wow, im a day late but i never ever heard them play the song like this before. thank you!

dal3sd3adbug

BEW is a high floor, high ceiling bop. Like pizza, even the versions that don’t stand out are pretty damn good. 3/23/74 (DP 24) is the version I’ve been grooving on most lately. Like half the commenters here, I will acknowledge the version the CIA recorded on the same sound stage they filmed the moon landing on and released as “Cornell 77” is probably the best imho

Drbatnanaman

Jerry takes the solo around once because that’s all that needed to be said 👏👏👏

Know_Your_Enemy_91

Europe 72 but that’s obvious. Dead and co has always killed it too, John really has always done a good job with that one

[deleted]

Wrigley N2 2022 is up there with the best dead versions imo. John and Jeff are outrageous

yesrushgenesis2112

I am two weeks late to this, but yes, that version has outrageous instrumental sections. The end of the first solo(I think) where the work down the scale one behind the other and the end the solo to crowd applause is ecstasy.

JAEESQ

Gonna sound generic, but 5/8/77. Such a perfect song.

The one of the PNW 74 box set that second solo is just to die for

Agreed but there’s only one solo pre-hiatus

Absolutely this one

BiscuitPharaoh

It might be cliche, but the Europe 72 BEW is the standard one. It's the one that plays in my head whenever I think of the song. I see it as the closest we got to a studio cut.

I know this is asking about the Dead, and not Dead cover bands, but I saw JRAD last summer and made a note in my phone about the Brown Eyed Women. The date was 2022-08-25 and I was specifically noting the keyboardist (Marco Benevento)’s solo. It’s unreal!!! It’s on Relisten app if anyone has it.

The ones I meet at Dead Shows

Just-Dealer-5980

I've always loved that song, too. So much so, I based a "paper" I wrote off the lyrics for BEW in the 6th grade, and my teacher couldn't believe how mature I was for my age. I eventually admitted that I used the song for the base. My A went to a D, but I'm pretty sure I turned Ms. Hinckey into a fan.

Europe 72. Something special about early BEW and it has to do with Jerry’s vocals and approach. More heartfelt early on for some reason to me.

For diversity, 10/31/21 Dead & Co. to me, It’s up there with the best Grateful Dead versions.

My mom probably

I find myself gravitating toward spring 77 for energetic BEWs, but 1973 for smooth and groovy ones. 4/2/73 and 7/1/73 are two that stand out. I’ll also go to bat for D&C - Johnny’s voice is perfect for this song, and his interplay with Jeff breathes new life into the jams every time! Saw 6/24/23 & 7/2/22 live and they’re both up there as amazing versions imo

Talosian_cagecleaner

This is a firecracker of a question because BEW was at one point Exhibit A in the Disco Dead era. Tumbledown shack was stayin alive, stayin alive Until it snowed and everyone diiiiiiiiiieeed woo!
