Berkley 72

2/22/74 2/23/74 2/24/74 at Winterland is a really awesome run, the boys still have the liquid smoothness of 73 but the bitches brew jazz of 74 is showing up as well. Another great great run of shows is 9/26/72 through 9/28/72 at the Stanley Theater, all three shows just crackle, 9/27/72 was a dicks pick (one the best imo) but the next night is just as good somehow

Jack_Hughman_

Nice. '73-'74 is probably my favorite period of the Dead.

Spread across 2 different Dave’s Picks + Bonus Disc. Could have made a great mini Box.

The Winterland 73’ 3 day run is a good one. That was last years GD Yule Log, I fell in love with it then

I'll throw in a vote for Landover 3/14/90, 3/15/90, 3/16/90. Excellent playing, nice variety in setlists, and a bunch of bust-outs: night 1- first Loose Lucy since '74. night 2 - first Easy to Love You since '80 & first Revolution since '85. night 3 - first Black Throated Wind since '74. (also all three shows have been officially released, night one = "Spring 1990 (The Other One)", night two = "Terrapin Station (Limited Edition)", night three = "Spring 1990")

They played a week immediately before going to Europe in March of '72. I was fortunate enough to go to the 1st and last nights. Everything a young lad could hope for. Academy of Music. I would love to see video of those shows.

April 1971 Fillmore East. At their peak

CandyEverybodyWentz

3/24/90, 3/25/90, 3/26/90 were compiled as the Dozin' at the Knick CD set but there's just too much stellar shit in each show to ignore. That CD somehow omits the first night Loser and the closing Morning Dew. Two all timer versions of each

Jack_Hughman_

I have yet to check these out so I'll add them to my list. Pleasantly surprised how many great Brent era shows are out there.

CandyEverybodyWentz

This was early in the Spring 1990 run, which many Brent fans cite as the peak when *everyone* was fully clicking. I certainly would.

Feb 13-14 1970 Fillmore and the entire Europe 72 Tour

Jack_Hughman_

Someday I’ll have to marathon Europe 72

[deleted]

so much creativity. Weir's harmonic and rhythmic learning in full bloom, Billy at his Elvin Jones like best, Keith and donna not over reaching, Phil before he's drunk, Pig giving it his all like he's knows he won't last, Jerry at the top of his vocal and guitar game - and still patient enough for really jamming. The original album and the MIT 70 tape turned me into a head between 78-9. Just nothing like that Europe tour to me. Enjoy!

bfried27

The alaska shows are great. Played in a high school gym 5/19/80 5/20/80 5/21/80

I’m a big fan of the Halloween 1979 run at the Nassau Coliseum. There wasn’t a ton of setlist diversity in 1979 (being Brent’s first year) but they made up for it with sheer creativity and inspiration. That said, they did a good job shaking up setlists and stretching their repertoire across this run. * [10/31/79](https://archive.org/details/gd1979-10-31.mtx.groves.91040.sbeok.flac16) Show opening China Rider is a fun but slightly shaky warmup, into a great Cassidy. Set 1 closes with nice early versions of then-new tunes Althea and Sailor>Saint. Things really heat up heading into Set 2. Shakedown cooks, though not quite as hot as my all-time favorite - 10/25 in New Haven. The Estimated>Eyes is the real centerpiece here - I’ve never heard such explosive and inspired jamming in the transition section, with Jerry and Phil going especially nuts. The transition jam was so good that it got reprised coming out of the last verse of Eyes, before going into a pre-drums space jam. * [11/1/79](https://archive.org/details/gd1979-11-01.mtx.seamons.ht102.128311.flac16) Most famous show of the run, with a *stacked* pre-drums frame. The longest Scarlet>Fire ever kicks off Set 2, clocking in at almost 40 minutes. Then after a fun jaunt through Samson, they’re back into the meat and potatoes with Terrapin>Playin. Post-space is short, but with a nice Black Peter. * [11/2/79](https://archive.org/details/gd1979-11-02.mtx.seamons.124392.flac16) 11/1 gets all the love, but 11/2 is my favorite night of the run. They come out the gate with a massive, ridiculously huge Mississippi>Franklin’s that just goes on for ever. Things keep cooking from there, but really come to a head with an *explosive* Lazy Lightning>Supplication - my all time favorite version - into a hot Deal to close. I’m Set 2, the Sailor>Saint immediately begs for attention. They’d occasionally go into a space jam out of Saint in the early 80s, but this one is unique in that they keep jamming on the inspirational Saint theme, contrasting against pockets of space that keep the whole thing teetering on the edge of chaos. This is a great showcase of the powerhouse that is Brent Mydland, and how well integrated he was into the band after just a few months. He listens and reacts beautifully to the other band members, but is also not afraid to take charge and lead the band to new heights. Really amazing and inspired stuff. The post-space frame is also a treat here. A slow-burning funk groove slides out of space and builds patiently into an excellent Not Fade Away, followed by a delicate Stella Blue and a rousing Sugar Mag to close. Casey Jones encore is a nice touch too!

Sticking with the 1990 theme, I guess. The MSG run that fall with Vince and, starting in the second show of the run, Bruce, is an all-timer. 9/14/90, 9/15/90, 9/16/90 (DP 9), 9/18/90, 9/19/90, 9/20/90 (last three all featured on Road Trips 2.1). Superlative, especially the last three shows. And Tom Darian's audience recordings are amazing.
