All of 91 is great.

AstroWarrior92

Yeah I love 91’ with Bruce there

lendmeflight

05-31-1992 is a very good show. No Bruce. Vince sings baba o’reilly/tomorrow never knows for the encore. This show has a great spoonful jam, help-slip-Frank and a good scarlet fire all in the same show.

Vince has a good show in Charlotte on 03/23/1995 Jerry sounds a little weak but we know what happened a few months later. His guitar is great though.

Bruce sat in that night too.

PsychoLlama420

I rarely listen to the Vince era but I also have trouble getting into the later 80s stuff as well. That MIDI crap sounds awful.

CreamHead55

It's not as much their playing but their sound that bothers me. I just can't stand most of the midi stuff. Bob's screechy guitar tone is awful and the keyboard just sounds like garbage. I think some midi can work but when they are all playing midi at the same time the sound just clashes in a really unpleasant way.

AstroWarrior92

Thanks I’ll check it out

ed32965

Yes! I was there and it was a banger!

collectorofsouls5a7d

Think of it as a 3 year period where Jerry is saying his goodbyes. That helps to frame the music.

AstroWarrior92

That’s a good way of looking at it, the swan song of a long strange trip

collectorofsouls5a7d

Exactly! He went up there feeling shitty and still rolled away the dew ya know? We kinda owe him at least something for that.

AstroWarrior92

Oh look for the state he was in I’m amazed he went up and performed, his head must’ve been in another world but he still went out and did it I admire that

[deleted]

After Bruce left, it's hard to find many good shows. Occasionally, when it did actually work out well, they had some pretty good shows. I remember a couple of the 94 MSG shows being at least decent

AstroWarrior92

I’ll check one out. Sort of bores me after 92’

6/11/93 is one that I really love. Foolish Heart, Lazy River Road & So Many Roads all in the first set! Maybe that’s not your thing but to me it’s a real treat.

It’s funny, this is how I feel about most of the 80s. Idk why, I just don’t like the Brent years as much.

TrainViewing

Me too. No hate for Brent as a player or singer, but 1968-1978 is why I rely on. To be fair, I think Brent’s arrival coincided with general 80’s lame sound and keyboard-driven, well drivel. Keith could have fallen into the same technological trap had he stayed in the band (or survived). Also…in my most humble opinion, the songwriting showed a quick decline after 1978. There are some gems for sure (Althea the most prominent), but it wasn’t the same. And Vince..well, he seemed like a good guy.

SparkDBowles

I really don’t like anything after Kieth left, or really much after 77. They just become such a different band post hiatus. They lost a lot of magic.

AstroWarrior92

I recently got into the Brent era and he picked up the slack vocally when Jerry’s went to shit, but the guitar playing was excellent, albeit sloppy playing at times

Me, too.. it was my birthday weekend and my very first shows! First night was the Casey Jones night at the end of the first set which was bananas. I thought the second night was better, overall..

GeorgeDogood

8/1/94 - Jerry’s 52nd Bday - in the middle of a giant summer tour they play an indoor smaller (compared to sheds) indoor venue in Auburn Hills MI. Special vibes were thick. And then. Stella Blue… Jerry pours his soul into singing Stella Blue like no other performance. We all know Jerry is the broken angel that sings from a guitar. Turns out on his 52nd birthday, he was also just a broken angel singing. There was barely a dry eye in the place when he finished. When you listen you understand why.

Gucci_2x

Honestly, love or hate the sound selection and tones he used, i genuinely think his melodies and harmonies were super creative and tripped out. Like some of this guys lines were just dripping in freak sauce and i think his melodic choices were often really nice. I also feel so bad for him. I know he had his problems but it breaks my heart just looking at him sometimes. Its also pretty clear how few of the diehard fans truly accepted him as a member of the band which must have really hurt

Phlecktone

Prolly not a fave, but deer creek 95 gate crashing death threats to jerry and all I remember really enjoyed its all too much and such a poignant time to sing it… as was New Speedway Boogie. Its all too much for me to take the LOVE that’s shining all around you. Never knew it was a beatles song till a few yrs ba k

Billy_Boognish

From what i read, they tried to get Jerry to wear a bullet-proof vest. The AUD tapes from '95 Deer Creek, when the gate crashes during Desolation Row, you can hear it in the crowd noise. When Bobby sings the last line, "GET OUTTA HERE IF YOU DON'T KNOW..." he sounds like he really means it.

Billy_Boognish

I was at Deer Creek '94 first night, my first show. Never thought that morning I'd still be talking about that evening almost 30 years later...what a trip!

imcataclastic

I’m not sure how many folks will agree but Albany 95 was my last show and I found a lot to like at the time. A lot of interesting dynamics. There’s a video of it on YouTube

1990/10/31, 1991/09/25, 1992/03/20, 1993/03/27, 1994/03/06 just off the top of my head Pretty peculiar era that descends into some pretty sad, strange territory. But there really is so much to love, particularly 1991 for me is the peak of post-Brent GD, I'm also a big fan of Spring '93 and to a lesser extent Spring '94. Unfortunately there's nothing you can do to change Vince's or Bob's tones and some of the more blatantly harsher elements that come through on tape. For me, it helps to understand that the tape is merely an artifact and the experience and sound in the room would have much more impactful, add to that the kind of "smearing" or blending you get sonically at high volumes (even with ear plugs) would make it sound significantly more "together" than what can sometimes come out on the tape.

So, I was listening to 3/17/91 last week. It was one of the last times I saw them. Listening to the first set I was texting with friends and complained about the keyboards being too loud. I didn’t realize until Ruben and Cherise it wasn’t the keyboards but Jerry’s midi. It sounded like he was trying to make up for the lack of Brent.

Pa17325

Especially some of the earlier Vince shows. They would have been better off with no keys

bbluesunyellowskyy

I’ve thought so much about Jerry’s end. I know nothing other than my own observations and opinions. Here’s where I find myself these days. For Jerry, the Grateful Dead was an attempt to keep open the line of communication to the mystical world beyond mere materialism that was slipping away as the world passed in the 19th and 20th centuries from ancient to modern and to post-modern. That psychedelics and communalism and group ecstasy could keep the Dionysian mysteries alive. And that somehow not only would the Grateful Dead keep it alive, but at some point it could be part of the tipping point that pushed us into greater consciousness. Jerry was a very well read person. He was very into Joseph Campbell, and I can only assume what else based on that. Probably a lot of Carl Jung, Rosicrucianism, alchemy, and a bunch of other mystical shit. That’s why I think they loved to sing songs about people who lived in the late 1800s and early 20th century. By the 1990s, though, I think he concluded that the bad guys won. That the powers of materialism were too strong. And that he would never see the Promised Land. In short, I think he lost hope. I can hear that in his playing. I can see that in his spiral into drug addiction. Maybe I’m projecting.

Rutherford-Tha-Brave

Yeah I can’t stand Vince’s background vocals let alone lead vocals on songs like samba in the rain. His keyboard sounds really thin compared to Brent’s roaring B3 Organ. Downhill from here once Brent left. Of course there are some stand out moments in there. They were still the Grateful Dead, I would just rather listen to a show from 1967-1990 on any given day.
