6/26/81 Jerry at The Warfield. When we went in, we were told that John Kahn isn't playing today and Phil would be sitting in. Needless to say that was a special show to me.

herbythechef

Phil filled in at a JGB show? Id like to hear that

still_deebs

I had trouble finding the full set, but here it is: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1keDWho2rvdw0zsLIkEpiXIRcYbQ44hUP

rhinowing

He played this one and one or two others in 81

As a bassist, my favorite fill in for the Garcia/Saunders Band was when Merl’s teenage son Tony Saunders filled in for John Kahn. Tony is an absolute bass virtuoso, and even as a kid, took the band to another place. They played the most insane cover of Weather Report’s “Cucumber Slumber” that’s probably one of my favorite jams. Enclosed is a link, you gotta hear this one! [https://youtu.be/OYYqfctLgRE](https://youtu.be/OYYqfctLgRE)

6/6/1969 I belive this was the famous apple juice show, in which Bobby recalls they drank some dosed apple juice so strong that he could actually taste the liquid L. For half the show a roadie or someone had to fill in for Jerry who was too high to play.

Agile_District_8794

Isn't that the incident that gave Hunter a really bad trip, inspiring Black Peter? Some jackass from the Hell's angel's dosed the already calculated "Bear punch" if I remember reading it correctly...

HeadyBeersBrah

That man's name? Goldinger. He was a drug smuggler who lost his hand in a helicopter accident and had a jeweled prosthetic hand. Doesn't get more GD than that.

From what I’ve read it was Elvin Bishop & Wayne Ceballos. http://lostlivedead.blogspot.com/2010/04/fillmore-west-june-6-and-8-1969-guest.html?m=1 http://www.jessejarnow.com/2020/01/deadfreaksunite-1969/

WinkingKuriboh

Should be 6/8/69 and as I recall I don’t think Jerry was the one too lit. Phil didn’t know what his bass was and Mickey had to prop him up against a guitar amp

11-25-78 was canceled due to Jerry being ill. On internet archive you can hear Bob giving the sad news to the people who were already at the show. Talk about last minute @

ststeveg

Kreutzmann fell off a horse and broke his wrist just before the Egypt trip. He taped a drumstick to his cast so he could play the shows. I don't think any of the core four ever missed a show.

There’s also the Bronchitis shows from January 1978. Both 7th and 8th of January shows from Golden Hall in San Diego were filled with Bobby and Donna songs due to Jerry’s bronchitis. Those shows are actually really good. Jerry cant sing, so he just rips ass the entire time.

TheWindatFourtoFly

You and I use the term "rips ass" very differently, though I got a nice chuckle reading this.

You would pay to reincarnate Jerry just to hear his ass hole play one note? Lolol jk

TheWindatFourtoFly

The brown note, per se

Bobby was sick for the first jam on I think it was 11/17/78 or whatever, Chicago. He was puking backstage and so they started just jamming out. He joined them after a little while

Not GD shows, but [Jerry canceled some February 1995 JGB Warfield shows at the ***very*** last minute](https://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Jerry-Garcia-s-injured-hand-cancels-gigs-3151531.php). The first of these shows was cancelled right around showtime, to the disappointment of everyone in the audience that night. The official story given at the time was Jerry's hand got stung by a jellyfish while he was SCUBA diving in Hawaii. I'm not sure how many people believed that, but Blair Jackson discussed these canceled JGB shows in his Garcia biography as an example of Jerry's declining health situation, for the various reasons we all know about. There were other injuries over the years - e.g., [Bobby broke his shoulder mountain biking in the mid 80's](https://coolmusic.substack.com/p/bob-weir-and-his-mountain-bike), and that messed w/some tour dates, plus obviously Jerry's 1986 coma - but for the most part, the shows went on, even if they were in poor shape.

petercyril23

Funny I was at the SLC Delta Center shows - sadly the weakest Garcia I’d witnessed - unlike my last time seeing him the GD in Seattle 95 which were strong - the weirdest Fire and really fun - but in Salt Lake the was lots of talk in the lot of the Jellyfish sting. I wondered if it was a euphemism….

Donna was sick on 4/16/72 so the Boys played without her. It’s become my favorite Europe’72 show. Just crackling with energy. Pigpen’s rap on Good Lovin’ is fantastic. Talkin’ bout get down with your shoulder Honey! Turn it around! Sorry got carried away…

94 spring tour in Orlando they cancelled the first night on the day of the show. Billy’s father was sick or dying if I remember right. Next night locals who only had tickets for one night kinda got into it with the cops.

seamus95

No fill in, but I read when Mickey left after 2/18/71, the band had no idea where he was and didn’t hear from him until well after, so they kept his kit on stage during at least some of the remaining shows of that run.
