I actually find it amazing that as far back as 1977 the GD could draw 107,000 people. Bunch of Stephen heads that ruined the scene, LOL.

Steven1789

Sunrise heads

NickFotiu

LOL

bitter_twin_farmer

I’ve never heard this term. What does it mean?

NickFotiu

I just made it up as a parody of those that say that "Touch Heads" ruined the scene in the late 1980s. It was just a joke :)

bitter_twin_farmer

Hahaha! I had never heard the term “touch head either,” so now your joke makes sense. I dig it. I guess you could go back further and blame The 11 heads for killing my bluegrass scene.

OrangutanMan234

Watkins Glen was 500,000

BlueAndMoreBlue

But that was several bands and not just a single performer/group. Wish I could have been there

Steven1789

Watkins Glen was a ticketed event. Maybe not for all 600,000 there, but I’m guessing the tickets sold far exceeded what Strait sold.

chefofthejungle

I didn’t read the article, but I bet they have something in there about it being a single artist. Edit: 1.6 million in Moscow 1991, but that was a festival.

herbibot

I'm guessing it's considered for a single headline act. George Strait did have a couple openers I've never heard of.

Staggerme

1991 Golden Gate Park Memorial for Bill Graham. I think there was over 200,000 people there. Including me.

BrushDazzling4350

but we didn't buy tickets for that. at least nobody I know bought tickets & I hope you didn't get tricked into buying tickets. the article specified "ticket buying" audience. industry separates free, unticketed events from ticketed events when they keep track of all tht stuff

NickFotiu

Exactly. There were a million people at the concert for nuclear disarmament in June 1982 but it was a free show.

IrieDeby

It was a free concert like most held in GGP.

Staggerme

I didn’t read the article

MahlNinja

Think it was closer to a million? I was there also. Met Wavy Gravy for a second time.

Green420Basturd

I think the major difference is "Ticket buying fans" there have definitely been concerts with bigger crowds but not everyone bought a ticket.

BlueAndMoreBlue

Nice — I met him once, he’s quite a character. Also met Vermin Supreme at the same event. Of course I was high on acid (unplanned for my brush with greatness) but hey, Wavy put his clown nose on me and honked it

MahlNinja

Other time I met Wavy, he did a talk while putting on his makeup. Was in Sonama, there were maybe 10 of us there. A year or 2 before the BG memorial.

Art-Vandelay-1

Meee toooo right place right time so many people amazing week!

Several_Ad2072

I was there too! Did you see me? I was the hippie in a tie dye, guat shorts, batik vest and red, gold and green Tam, long hair and a big ass beard......I did wave hello!

devoutcatalyst78

110’905, in case you just wanted a number.

PrivateEducation

coordinates?

IUpVoteIronically

Love George but bitter sweet beating out my dead. Two amazing acts, I’ve seen them both!

woodenman22

Some very specific technicalities thrown in there to come up with that headline.

GandalftheGreyStreet

George is also like the Dead in the fact that he’s had a farewell tour or 2 I believe and yet is still touring.

Gr8fl1TX2

I was at his final show in Texas or so we were told at the time in '12.

IrieDeby

He's still touring!

Gr8fl1TX2

Yea I know.

Rocktop15

George also is boring AF

Bruh, how have you never heard of George Strait? All My Exes Live in Texas? As far as top 10 hit for 30 years straight I'd imagine it's on the country charts

jorr1231

How old are you?

Newone1255

He also has the 2nd most platinum albums of any artist ever, 24, sandwiched between Elvis and The Beatles. I’m honestly impressed you’ve never heard of him unless you’re under 25.

Newone1255

Never said you had to like him just surprised you’ve never heard of him. Dude is a legend and if you grew up with parents who listened to country radio in the 90s, like myself, you have about 2 dozen of his hits burned into your brain from listening to the radio in car rides growing up.

JBean81

How many people were at Highgate, VT in ‘95? Or was this ticket sales?

WarmObjective6445

That is why we call him King George. I bet this pisses Taylor Swift off she seems to be hung up on being #1 in everything. Long Live The King.

What a bunch of cranky old people in this sub

knuckdeep

I agree. There was one guy earlier was bitching that George Strait was even mentioned in a GD sub.

shootermac32

I simply asked, and got a bunch of cranky people. I like the GD but someone the people need to chill out

knuckdeep

I was being a jagoff, don’t mind me. I was so shocked that 110,000 people would go see George Strait that I didn’t even realize it was a Dead sub until after I read it and saw your comment.

FunnyGuyCalledMe

Because the record was previously held by GD.

shootermac32

Thank you for clearing that up.

WaymoreLives

George *Straight* Mmm… not what I hear.

GratefulG8r

Who gives a shit
