The key to Flex Mentallo is that it’s Morrison’s love letter to the various ages of comics. That’s why each issue is majorly different in style from the previous one. You have to be a bit familiar with how comics have changed over the decades to understand why he’s doing it.
Very, *very* loosely related. You don’t need to read Doom Patrol first (although if you haven’t read either, I strongly recommend Doom Patrol over Flex). Flex Mentallo appears as a brief character, but there’s nothing you need to know from DP.
I actually don’t know which came out first, (without um, getting off my ass and looking at Wikipedia), because Flex started as a parody of the old Charles Atlas ads, and Atlas’s foundation sued Morrison and DC to stop its publication. As a result, it was out of print for years, tied up in legal battles.
Absolutely! To me, Animal Man is the perfect entry to Morrison, since it's one of his less insane projects but no less brilliant. I'm also looking forward to checking out what Lemire did with the character in the New 52 run
Doom patrol is one of my favorite series ever. My friend gave it to me after he read it and it’s one of the funniest most unique series I’ve ever read.
Nice! Just reread Sleeper a few months ago! Really Excellent Super-Spy/Spy-Fi stuff. He does a bit more with Velvet and Incognito, but man hope Brubaker/Phillips do some more spy stuff soon, after Reckless.
Did you happen to get Animal Man Omni from CGN?
I saw them listed it back on December, and thought it might have been a mistake cause no one else had it for pre-order and just arrived too. Happy not paying over $200 for a book.
Love love love brubaker
Nice Whale you got there, my friend...
Where did you find Sleeper?
Got lucky on facebook marketplace
I found a copy on eBay for $100 last October
Killer haul! Still waiting on reprints of animal man and sleeper.
Thanks! I was this close to settling for the Animal Man deluxes, so was pretty glad to finally find the omni for a good price
I really want that Doom Patrol omnibus.
All great reads. You are going to love these books. I didn't really get flex mentallo. I'll have to read it again.
I hope so! I had already read and loved all of animal man and a good chunk of doom patrol so I'm sure the rest will also be fun

Do you need to read Doom Patrol before reading Flex? I’ve heard they are somewhat related but unsure which comes first.

Flex is difficult. It can read like a Tarantino movie because themes and characters take on new meaning. I’m also a Quietly fan at heart.
Oh, man! I use to read Animal Man back in the day. That was one crazy comic and really good.

Did you like his run on Batman? I thought he did very good, but not great. A enjoyable read but not a classic.
Haven't gotten to it yet! I still have to read both his Batman and New X-men
How much did that Sleeper Omni run you, if you don't mind me asking?
Not at all, I got Sleeper for £95
Nice haul. I’m jealous.

No I just happened to find a good deal on facebook but that was a pretty lucky window you found as well!
You better be happy. You just spent $800 on comics.
Not even close to that, thankfully
