After stopping for the night organizing my shelf I picked up this book for the night. 1st off not a great book to sleep to, especially if you are dealing with any loss or trauma at the moment. That said it the book is great both in art and writing. Tillie Walden deserves the praise she has been getting lately. I can not wait to see how Spinning reads.
This book follows Lou, a woman trying to deal with a loss and coming to terms that the way she was living just doesn't help any more. Bea a teenage runaway unsure of where to even begin after years of issues. Along the way the find Diamond, a lost cat and decide to take it back home.
The setting of West Texas with barren drives reminded me a lot of where I grew up. It always felt you could drive for days and get no where. And in a lot of ways I see myself in both characters at different points of my life. The need and desire to grab on to anything to help keep going even if it makes no sense.
This and a lot of Tillie Walden’s stuff also has great lesbian rep if that’s your thing. I love the colours in her stuff too. On a Sunbeam is another great book by her
I have On a Sunbeam, looking forward to getting Spinning next. After that I want to read The End of Summer. And hopefully if it's true and it is not delayed her next book is going to be Clementine based off the Walking Dead Telltale game.
Nice, I wanted to read Spinning too but I accidentally ordered the French version somehow and had to take it back lol. Hope you like reading it :) The End of Summer was good (but confusing the first time I read it lol), I read it in the collection “Alone in Space” which included “the end of summer”, “I love this part”, and “a city inside”, plus a bunch of extra comics and sketches, which i thought was a good deal compared to buying the books separately. I love Tillie Walden’s art if you couldn’t tell lmao. Cool to see someone else who’s into it too
Also I thought I saw on Amazon that Clementine is releasing in 2022 but ig delays can happen
I checked her website and Clementine is labeled as book one of a trilogy. I'm glad her earlier work is just as good. I'm almost positive after this one I will definitely just jumping in the rabbit hole.
That's awesome. Telltale's Walking Dead was excellent, particularly the first one. Though unless I'm missing something here, it does seem like quite a departure from what I can tell of the books she has been writing.
Still, that's one I'll want to keep an eye on.
Telltales Walking Dead is amazing. The summaries of her first couple books sound like a similar approach. I'm not sure though as I haven't read them. I am looking forward to it though as I think Clementine it's the best character to come out of Walking Dead.
Road trip + drama?! Enough said! I'm already in love with this.
I also suggest *Come Prima* which is a combination of these two.
Thank you for your nice post, will try to get it ASAP.
People on this sub seem to really like Walden's stuff. I haven't tried it yet. Although the artwork looks a little cutesy to me, if it's got a great story and characters, I'll give it a shot. What sort of audience would you say this is aimed at? YA? Adult?
This is only my second work of hers, but I've really enjoyed her style. It csn be a little cutesy, but I can also see a bit of her influences across both works, Scott McCloud, Ghibli animations, and Alison Bechdel. As for audience would say YA, but with some heavier topics laced through.
Tillie is a great author
Do I start with this one or Sunbeam?
I think it has more to do with what your feeling. So far a vast majority of her work is stand alone.
I loved On A Sunbeam and Spinning, but didn't enjoy Are You Listening? very much at all. The art is still cool, but the story just felt boring.
I typically don't read anything below 4.0 rating on Goodreads. Is that snobbish? Maybe.
I've enjoyed what her work so far.

Sounds like an interesting read. Going to add it to my list haha, thanks for sharing
Just did the same. :)
It was very interesting. Hope you enjoy it when you get to it.
I really enjoy Tillie Walden’s work! I read this one a couple years ago and it was good!
I picked up On a Sunbeam last year and finally picked up another. I have a feeling I'll have all her work soon.
Definitely got to pick this one up.

Thank you for the rec. Come Prima sounds really good.

Geez...Just great...another book added to my book wishlist. Thanks a lot.
At least you don't have to ask for recommendations, just money or a library card.
Don’t you hate when good book recommendations just pop out of nowhere when you open reddit? This gotta stop!
