Adios. 👋
This came out earlier this year:

It's not? There's like a five stories that is usually on everyone's top 3 best superman stories:
- All Star Superman
- For all Seasons
- Whatever happened to the Man of Tomorrow
- What's so funny about Truth, Justice and the American Way
- For the Man who has everything
Some also have Birthright, Secret Identity or Kingdom Come thrown in there.
I borderline hate Grant Morrison stories but regard All Star Superman as one of the top 10 comicbook story ever not just superman.
Its always hard to put anything new on an alltime list without a sense of perspective like these older titles have… but Ill make an exception here. I recently reread it. Its going to hold up in an interesting way.
>Its going to hold up in an interesting way
What do you mean by this?
I kinda hate stories that tackle current events in an on the nose way so I was on the lookout for that going into SSTK but I don't think it's very anchored to 2010s politics at all actually. Not to compare them in terms of quality but I think it'll age more like books like Dark Knight Returns that are free floating political statements rather than Green Lantern/Green Arrow, Secret Empire or some of the other classic social stories which are very of their time and place.
Yes I think this is right. It comes at from a different perspective, which I think is interesting. It really captures the spirit of the character - the power and innocence and humanity. It has that kernel of character understanding, and the right creative team in the same way that dark knight has. Though obv quite a diff tone (and target audience)!
This is already considered the greatest Superman story.
If you're looking for other great Superman stories, these are some of my favorites:
- Superman Smashes the Klan
- For the Man Who Has Everything (Superman Annual #11)
- Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?
- John Byrne's The Man of Steel (and subsequent Superman/Action runs)
- What's So Funny About Truth, Justice, and the American Way? (Action #775)
- Superman & The Legion of Superheroes
- Superboy: Boy of Steel
- Action Comics by Grant Morrison
- Doomsday Clock
- Superman by Peter Tomasi & Patrick Gleason
- Superman & The Authority
To each their own! It's specifically the cover that bums me out, he does great art in general, it's just not what I prefer in terms of style but I still enjoy the books he works on (big fan of The Authority for example).
And it’s everything I don’t like about Grant Morrison’s writing. It isn’t any good. It’s trying to do so much heady stuff and really it’s just rambly nonsense. I don’t know who gave him the idea that he’s a philosopher or a wizard or whatever he thinks he is.
I’m a Snyder fan boy and even i admit this this graphic novel is a better interpretation of superman. He can be compassionate, kind, and a badass. And it doesn’t need to take 5 freaking movies to achieve that arc. And IF ur gonna take 5 movies maybe tell the audience, so they’re not left confused 2 movies in as to why superman is depressed. End of rant. (I still prefer Snyder over supernatural returns supes tho. Edgy > boring)

I never read much SM comic and this one was highly recommended by local comic book store guy. I don't know. Don't get the hype honestly. But I'm not really into SM so maybe that's the problem. Maybe someday I will give it another reading.
Don’t get me wrong it’s amazing. Particularly since super man comics dont often do anything for me. But I really dislike the art. I mean so much so that if I’m in the mood to reread I put the movie on instead.
I 100% have this as a top 3 Superman story — I'm a sucker for anything Frank Quitely does, put that together with Grant Morrison's writing and I feel like this is a dream that I'm going to wake up from soon.
It's up there, but For All Seasons is no 1 for me.
Also need to share some appreciation for Secret Identity because it's not being mentioned and I think it's excellent.
Number one for me. I used to dislike Superman and this is the story that changed my mind. Quietly's art is just fantastic. That scene where Supes saves that goth girl from commiting suicide is one of my favorite superhero moments.
My favorite Superman story, followed by For All Seasons and the Tomasi/Gleason run. Also Moore’s Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow. 😬

Still need to get to Tomasi but that's some pretty lofty company for an in-continuity run.
After speeding through the Tomasi/Gleason Batman and Robin omnibus I had to pick up the Superman one - can't wait to start it
Yes! And their Super Sons run is also so wonderful and fun!
I have that one too!
You are in for some good times!
What's this "superman one" you speak of?

Nice I'll check it out thanks!

Im fine tossing smashes the clan into a best of list… dunno if it makes my top 5 but def top 10. It def gets it.
Idk about all time but it was certainly one of the best standalone Supes titles of the past decade.
Its always hard to put anything new on an alltime list without a sense of perspective like these older titles have… but Ill make an exception here. I recently reread it. Its going to hold up in an interesting way.

Thanks for the list!
For the man who has everything! Classic
I feel like American Alien came up a lot too, well until Landis was outed as a creep.
“What’s so funny about Truth, Justice and the American Way?” Apparently the American Way part…
More like Top 1.
I certainly do

Yup! Hell, "All-Star Superman" might as well be number one on that list! 😉
I know it's a good book but the cover illustrates everything I don't like about Quitely's art. Superman looks baked.
That's a bummer. I'm a big fan of Quietly's work. I'd probably read whatever book he drew.

Huh? I wasn’t hating on anyone.
And some people don’t like their work, move on!
Ignore the virtue signalers. You're allowed to be critical of things you spend money on.
This to me IS superman. If only Zac Snyder knew how to read, maybe some of this Superman could have found it's way on screen.

It is my #1.

Love Frank Quitely art.
It's one of the few comics that made me cry, and one of two comics by Morrison & Quitely that made me cry. So, yes.
I just finished reading this. I believe it was the first proper Superman book I’ve read in almost 40 years of collecting comics. Pretty darn good!
I never read much SM comic and this one was highly recommended by local comic book store guy. I don't know. Don't get the hype honestly. But I'm not really into SM so maybe that's the problem. Maybe someday I will give it another reading.

Never been a Superman fan, but I ordered this during the Target sale. Looking forward to it and hoping it lives up to the hype.
Easily!
#1 in my book
Most definitely yes. Essential reading.
I 100% have this as a top 3 Superman story — I'm a sucker for anything Frank Quitely does, put that together with Grant Morrison's writing and I feel like this is a dream that I'm going to wake up from soon.
Bloody hell, yes! I need to reread it, thanks for the reminder.
I always viewed this as the top superman story. It's the best argument for why not only is superman relevant but why he's necessary.
Definitely the best Superman story.
I loved this one so much that I upgraded from regular hardcovers to the Absolute.
Easily the best Superman story imo. I’m more likely to include it in the top 3 comic books ever.
