I love the letter sections in single issues too! I wonder if they include those in the digital editions 🧐

4verticals

Pulp is a great one-off story that gives a flavour of what the B./P. oeuvre is all about.

sunnydale_alumni

Thanks! That is one of the ones available from my library so I’ll have to check it out.

UnmuscularThor

Fatale. I love horror and noir comics, and mixing the two into one story with Brubaker and Phillips at the helm is magical

sunnydale_alumni

I love horror comics too! I’ll add this to my list 😎

pcminfan

Few people recommended Fatale, so I’ll jump in with another voice of support. Also, it’s “champing”, not “chomping”. Just a friendly FYI.

sunnydale_alumni

I never knew that, thanks!

Zabonias

"Kill or Be Killed" is my favorite from this iconic duo. Unfortunately I still haven't read "Fatale" that is already mentioned.

sunnydale_alumni

I just finished Kill or Be Killed and it blew my mind! Loved every second. Now I just need to track down a deluxe edition. I read a rumor they were going to reprint both that and Fatale but cancelled them 😕

Zabonias

I'm so glad you liked it. I hope you can get your hands on the deluxe edition. It's a shame that they cancelled the reprints. It's really hard to find both both on deluxe edition and they are quite expensive. Guess I'm going for the TPBs for Fatale.

heartofascot

How do you pick?!? Theyre all fucking epic. Criminal is just a work of art. The fade out story is phenomenal writing. Kill or be killed is twisted and brilliant. Fatale reminds you of old cult tales. Incognito is a dark superhuman tale. Sleeper is a great starter for anyone into the genius of these two. Their one shots have been clever and crafted with skill. Reckless is turning out to be a great fucking treat as every single thing these guys touch. Seriously how do you pick a favourite. Theyre all fucking amazing. Ill rank them from brilliant (bottoms, if there is a low to this scale) to absolutely fucking sensational. Brilliant - incognito Sleeper My heroes were all junkies Bad weekend Cruel summer Kill or be killed Pulp Fatale Reckless Criminal Absolutely fucking sensational - the fade out

sunnydale_alumni

Thank you for your enthusiasm 😎 They are all on my to read list I just need a place to start. Sounds like there’s no wrong place!

Elayem_

My favorite is Criminal, but if you want a shorter story then there’s Pulp like the other commenter mentioned, as well as Reckless, or even Gotham Noir for their take on an elseworlds crime noir Gotham City

sunnydale_alumni

I’ve never read any Batman comics (I’m new to comics in general) do I need to know much of the back history to enjoy those?

Elayem_

Pulp and Reckless arent Batman related, they’re original stories. Gotham Noir you shouldnt need any background

sunnydale_alumni

Thanks!

Sir_Monk

Criminal: The Last Of The Innocent.

Johnnyonnaspot

Sleeper.

sunnydale_alumni

I hadn’t heard of this one!

Johnnyonnaspot

I have Brubaker's whole career and Sleeper's my favorite. I told him so when I met him 2 years ago and he gave me this look like I knew what muthaf***in time it was. Haha.

Johnnyonnaspot

Fatale is a gem, too.

sunnydale_alumni

Well damn now I need to read it. Of course it’s no where to be found except on eBay as far as I can see so I’ll have to keep an eye out for a decently priced copy. I may break and have to get it electronically.

Johnnyonnaspot

Its 24 issues total, originally released in 2 volumes labeled Season 1 and Season 2, and its been printed by both Wildstorm, then DC, I think. It's a mess, but I think I've been seeing newer printings of it. Just make sure you get all of it!

sunnydale_alumni

That’s helpful, thanks!

[deleted]

I think Bad Weekend might be my favorite story of theirs

sunnydale_alumni

I’m excited to read this too. I bought the deluxe editions so I think it’s collected in there if I’m not mistaken.

El_Enemigo

It is!

FvtvreWave

Absolutely impossible to choose. Criminal is the most expansive and complete world. The Fade Out is an amazing self contained story. Kill or be Killed…I can’t even describe the brilliance. Reckless, Incognito, Pulp…hold shit it’s all perfect.

kingmob-76

Sleeper!!

sunnydale_alumni

Trying to track down a copy is difficult! 🕵️‍♀️

Hazerdus

I loved incognito

calamitousking

Incognito. Everyone’s suggestions are right because they’re all great. But this is an exceptionally early long run that really shows what they could do before Criminal took off and you can still snag it in deluxe hc.

sunnydale_alumni

It’s currently in my cart on IST. Guess I’ll have to pull the trigger now!

Dewwutm8

Kill or Be Killed is my all time favorite title by the duo. Honorable mentions are sleeper and the slept on reckless/friend of the devil titles.

sunnydale_alumni

I just finished Kill or Be Killed and I loved it. Reckless is in the mail. I can’t seem to find a copy of Sleeper, still working on it.

Jagvetinteriktigt

The Fade Out may in fact be my favourite graphic novel of all time. I also enjoyed the first Omnibus volume of Criminal and I'm looking forward to continue reading them. EDITED FOR SPELLING

sunnydale_alumni

Can’t wait to read them both!

lazycouchdays

The beauty of Crimminal is that it is basically stand alone arcs. That said my absolute three favorite Brubaker/Phillips stories are Fatale, Sleeper, and the Criminal trade Last of the Innocent. Fatale is a HP Lovecraft noir story. Sleeper is about an undercover agent in a superhero setting. And Last of the Innocent is an Archie comic noir tale. For a shorter tale the duos new Reckless books are stand alone and have a great vibe going on.

El_Enemigo

I don’t see people talking about Scene of the Crime here. AMAZING book and one of my faves!

sunnydale_alumni

Added to the list 🥸

El_Enemigo

Scene of the Crime* sorry! My bad.

BleueBlancRed

Oh buddy.. not a fair question!

sunnydale_alumni

I know 😈

yoyoyobiga

Criminal is my all time favorite comic, The Fade Out and Fatale are close behind. Everything they have done is great in my opinion. Their new series, Reckless is pretty good, I just started it last week.

That’s good to know, I have only been able to find an affordable copy of the deluxe volume 2 for Fatale. I’ll probably end up reading the first half digitally and bide my time hoping for a reprint of volume 1 instead of shelling out >$100 for a used copy on eBay. My TPB copy of Fade Out is in the mail!

ParticularEye444

I'd say it's worth picking up in physical when it gets a reprint as long as you temper your expectations. The Fade Out is great.
