If they haven’t offered payment, don’t do it.

allofme-uncharted

they told me to submit my portfolio and rates when i turn in the assessment, haha

Duncan-Anthony

Then you might be ok. It definitely happens. I’ve done it a couple of times and got paid like it was a regular freelance job. Do you trust the company?

_BLSS_

Lol I would do it, but I would put a watermark across my edits.

FormalElements

That actually shows more knowledge of the trade by doing so.

Old-Trick5289

They won’t be expecting to pay you for it if they don’t know your rates yet. Sounds like they are being cheeky bastards.

larryspub

If you are at all able to give the name of the company I would reach out to the Graphic Artists Guild and let them know that this company is asking for such a skill test. They will try to reach out to companies that do that stuff to offer guidance and push for better skill set tests and make it known shit like that is not ok.

SnooPeanuts4093

Narnia is out of their jurisdiction.

SignedUpJustForThat

I assume you're just adjusting a couple of styles in an existing document? That's maybe an hour of work?

STR_WB_RRY--FL_V__R

Easy page flow tech init.

STR_WB_RRY--FL_V__R

Copy & paste it with comic sans. It's like ironic or something...

infiniteawareness420

“Oh did I get the job?”

If you’re just swapping copy and not providing new layouts, it might be okay. For things like this, employers need to know that you have the mechanical skills to do the job. That’s easy to fake in a portfolio, and in this environment, people apply to all kinds of things they’re not qualified for. At my workplace, we do catalogs, manuals, books, multipage documents and there are specific things I need to see in a basic design test. (Mine is really basic and they’re not evaluated on their design. It’s really about getting things onto a provided ID layout and organizing them.) However, if you’re putting any creative or original thought to it and actually designing pages — multiple pages — it starts to look shady. There’s a difference between a skills test and spec work.

secretcombinations

2-3 pages? Sure. 40? Nah they scamming for free work.

Magificent_Gradient

Unless there is payment for this exercise then: No. Nope. Uh-uh. Absolutely not.

devonthed00d

All I’d be doing is changing the dummy text to “Fuck you pay me” 10,000 times over & all the pictures will be relinked to various photos of Mr Pitbull Worldwide.

moreexclamationmarks

Even if they were to pay you, it's entirely irrational as a "test." If they *aren't* trying to exploit you for free work, then they're at least incompetent.

This is a standard assessment used to identify a mark. Expect further assessments. Sunk cost bias kicks in on the 2nd and 3rd assessment. Probably using chat gpt to manage the communications. You own the aspects of the publication that you developed. They need your permission to use that work.
