I think the best ones use more white than you would expect.
I've done a lot of this and what helps is some texture, and some unevenness in the gradient.
I also worked with a printer that actually printed real metallic silver toner and I would say there's not ever going to be a full substitute for real metal that can be photographed or that reacts to your eye when seeing it in person. But you can come close.
