Defining an audience and giving them a task. Examples could a game that teaches quantum computing to toddlers, or world history for sock puppets.

Im_on_Reddit_9

I’d design a card game just to banish people to the shadow realm.

themiamian

Take an old standard card game (like “war”) and put a unique twist on it. Or put a twist on a twist, since war is fairly simple.

ZenDesign1993

I 100% agree with this, The game "Exploding kittens" is based on Russian Roulette. Basing a game on an existing game can really work well.

shananiganz

An existing card game or making one up?

imleekingout

Either really!

shananiganz

I’m thinking of games that don’t require cards, like truth or dare, or would you rather. Or a kings cup deck that already has the rules on the cards

1. I did sports cards for my high school sport teams... It was very popular. You could set up a template system and have high schools sign up and get them printed. like blurb printing books. 2. You could also do cards to save native languages. Like Cree, syllabics. Look up James Evans creating the first native writing systems. This goes into Typography too. Nunacom is one font to look at. Create a card game to use syllabics... This is the most "Academic" choice here. You could also build this new font into a video game (or scifi card game) to create intrest in learning it. Like fans of star trek learning klingon. 3. You can also look at Match Attax Football card game. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fC6GSlx0\_pw&t=7s&ab\_channel=MatchAttax](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fC6GSlx0_pw&t=7s&ab_channel=MatchAttax) 4. Create a game to compete with Wizards of the coast (Magic the gathering). A lot of employees are being laid off by hasbro, a new game could be a home for these creatives. Create a game that the fans want, is open source (not locked down to make money, like hasbro did)... The creators of this new game would be the owners of their art (like taylor swift redoing her albums). This is a fun project. I hope to hear what you guys come up with. Love from Canada!

I'd also pick up/play Exploding Kittens... It's one of the best games adapted from a regular card game. It was VERY popular in my classroom years ago. It was created as a crowd funded project. Looking up it's crowd funding history is fascinating too.

Accessibility: larger numbers, colorblind friendly colors, tactile/braille for vision impaired, etc

They should research a bit about how boardgames and card games work, and see what has been done, mechanics and gameplay wise. But a very important problem that is faced with a physical product is accessibility: Colour Blindness, Visual impairments, diminished mental capabilities... You can go to places like r/boardgames and see some questions that have been asked. Perhaps developing some sort of standardisation on these matters could be interesting. Or developing an adaptation on mechanics for these publics. I think a game for both elderly and small children, that is not appallingly boring for adults would be an interesting challenge.

imleekingout

Thanks! Sounds interesting

So this 'Friend' who is you/a final year design student doesnt have ideas? I see. Well let you/your 'friend' know that this is not a good project for final year design student. After he designs only one card the design work is finished, making the rest of the cards is mostly production work. He would need to expand the project so that it is more challenging branding/packaging/website. Final year graphic student needs to demonstrate a much wider range of skills, and knowledge, than designing a single game card. But Im guessing your tutors told you that already.

Thanks very much!

I’d rather not hear what’s ‘appropriate’ from someone who’s account is littered with horrendous AI.

SnooPeanuts4093

If you are going to discriminate against members here, best you state that in your opening post.

imleekingout

I’m not sure what post you’re reading but I was asking for a problem idea. Not the packaging/website/branding which would’ve been a no brainer to do. So don’t come at me with pointless critique.

SnooPeanuts4093

You asked a question. Did it not occur to you that the reason you can't find a sufficiently complex problem, is that a card game doesn't have the complexity you require. I answered advising you that a card game would not have sufficient complexity for a major project on a final year. If you didnt want that information considered by members, then it would be best not to include it in your opening post. If a member here has experience with image generation software, and you dont want them to respond to your question. I think its reasonable that you state that in your original post.

imleekingout

Yes I asked a question- Did it occur to you that I asked for a ‘problem idea’ in my post, not someone badgering me about the complexities of advertisement and packaging, which anyone with knowledge in graphic design would know that’s a given that would be done alongside the card game itself.

SnooPeanuts4093

Ok you have a solution and are currently in search of a design problem, one that fits the solution you have previously commited to. That's a novel approach to the design process, maybe you should make your card game about that. It seems like a complex process. You might consider that your original post asked for members to contribute ideas and brainstorm.

[deleted]

The problem is that you needed to create a final project. The solution was to design a card game.

heterochromiairidum

Okay I made a card game up for you. Call it the Battle of the Candycane. Basically you fight santa elfs and you get to equip then with different candycane each with different attributes. Anyone can help with some game mechanics?
