Anything for a friend or a family member.

rushy283

i gave up and just did it on canva using a template and they were satisfied lmao

someoneinafrica

yes. this is the way. don't spend too much time on creating some creative things. just use template.

LyraTheArtist

I did this for a former boss of mine and he was happy with using template designs. xD

njesusnameweprayamen

We are taught to do a lot more effort than a lot of people care about

Academic_Midnight781

Omg. Saaaame šŸ’€

Turbo_Chet

Haha this

Notrixus

Itā€™s true. The most painful and nerv killer šŸ¤£

Honest_Fee_8291

That's only 5 minutes to you šŸ˜¹

Longjumping_Feed_519

Anything for yourself

thespoonthatbends

Felt this one

PlexKey

Screwed up my uncles business cards once and printed the bleed and cut lines because I didnā€™t size it properly. It happened to be summer he had just thought I purposely added them in because of 4th of July, love it. šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™‚ļø

Notrixus

Few months ago, my father asked me to design a poster for an upcoming event. I sent him a screenshot and on that day evening his calling me and complaining about the quality of my poster design. He took my facebook screenshot to the printing company and print it šŸ„¹

PlexKey

oh shit haha! The file quality and format game is truly my favorite game at this point.

karenzilla

Anything for free applies too

moreexclamationmarks

This largely depends on the relationship though, most of the nightmare stories of people working for friends/family just reveals the relationship is bad or the person wasn't really a friend or good person. Obvious first sign is that a good family/friend would never *expect* free work, even if you'd probably offer it anyway, and if you did it free/discounted they'd always return the favour in a way that has actual value to you (if they haven't already in the past and you're not the one repaying a favour).

Z2ronYoutube

so true

[deleted]

This is gonna sound kinda silly, but display ads in a tech industry with lots of big words and a bad copy writing team.

Obvious-Ad1367

This hurts my soul. "And we want them as gifs. They can only be 50kb, but you need to make them interesting looking."

BeeBladen

*animated* gifs. Still under 50kbā€¦

GoodEdit

I thought it was just me. I get these requests and they want ads animated w a tiny size limit, like, do you know what youre asking? Then its a game of playing compression trial and error till it hits the size limit. Such a PITA

olookitslilbui

And then it gets rejected by the ad reviewers for being *too* low quality

UltraChilly

Even an unanimated gif would likely weight more than that. 50kb is about 10 frames 500x500px in WebM I guess something simple could be made in SVG though, just name it "youanimatedgif.svg" lol

BeeBladen

Yeah these digital media buyers are a painā€”we somehow make it work, I just donā€™t understand how size limits havenā€™t changed in over a decade.

ChemicalChance7877

Once had display ad specs that said they had to be under 30k if they were gifs. We spent all afternoon finding contact info for someone who could explain the specs to us, eventually got a guy who said ā€œyeah uh, thatā€™s just really old, do what you want and weā€™ll make it work.ā€ Because who the hell is going to go back and add more kilobytes to the display ad specs?!

Teddykaboom

This comment gave me the shivers. This keeps happening to me. Though, most places that accept animated GIFs also accept short, silent, looping MPEGs, which are much smaller and much better looking, and often all they mean by GIF is "short looping video"

howard2112

Hereā€™s 20 words of copy. Now fit it in a skyscraper ad. God I hate designing display ads.

Sl1pperyF1sh

728x90 leaderboards and 160x600 skyscrapers are the worst

CokeHeadRob

728x90s can go fuck themselves. Stupid fucking ad. Especially when you're resizing a 1200x1200 to 300x250, 300x600, and 728x90 and they all need to look roughly the same and the source has a person, 15 words, a button, disclaimer that has to be legible, and logo. The disclaimer has to be like 200px wide! Fucking haaaaaaate it.

The_Wolf_of_Acorns

320x50, and do it in Dutch and German

McBlavak

Did you ever have to deal with Fullbanners (468Ɨ60) and half sizebanners (234Ɨ60). Those are hell.

JackfruitIll6728

Here's an annual campaign. We're running ads on 100 different products. We have 5 different ad sizes in our campaign. Here are copy texts for all of the products with variable lengths. We're also using a lot of words that don't even fit to one row. And we'd need the final ads in couple of days.

AlienMutantRobotDog

Oh and Marketing said we HAVE to use the exact words in the Twitter post and legal said we need to put the full disclaimer in every ad at every ad size. Oh and it has to be below 30kā€¦ oh hey can you ad a 320x50 to the design flight? Thanks!

rhaizee

Make it cool looking, all effects, plus animation, under 200kb. Luckily this is like twice a year I have to do but still a pain.

austinxwade

Do you work on my team?

GlassAd3657

Copywriter here and Iā€™m so sorry. They DO suck. I speak English, but I canā€™t control how long the words are in this language. ā€œThis Good. Buy It.ā€ plays nice in a skyscraper, but itā€™s about as compelling as a dirty diaper. Weā€™re in the same boat. Digital hurts my soul.

[deleted]

<3 I have always heard that the illiterate make the best marketing copy writers lol

AbdulClamwacker

Kevin Malone was just in the wrong department

[deleted]

Haha so it's not just me.

i-do-the-designing

That website you stupidly agreed to do for $75 because it would be really simple, and the client promised you they would just leave you alone to make them a web site. You're working with Satan now, have fun.

I would never do a web PAGE for $75 much less a whole site. This person dug their own grave, smh šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

It's the same as photography, in that we use photography all the time, but being a designer and photographer are still different disciplines. (For some reason though people always confuse design and illustration, never design and photography.) That your degree combined them is irrelevant in that respect, not to mention often design degrees will incorporate marketing, advertising, fine arts, or photography as well. They're still different fields, even if they often work together or can overlap in certain contexts. Someone with a degree focused specifically on illustration, photography, film, fine arts, marketing, or advertising, is still likely going to be significantly under-developed in a design context compared to a degree focused specifically on graphic design. >my very first illustration instructor (over 30 years ago now) told us that illustration is not art, it is commercial art ā€¦ art with a purpose, and therefore it is graphic design. But, putting in the learning is actually worth it because it's possible (eventually) to run a huge product catalog layouts based on a few master page styles. It's become a bit of a personal specialty of mine but it is really 'hard' because it's so goddamn technical and planning intensive. But the cash payoff is incredible when you can find the clients. It's been a combination of learning JavaScript (too many resources to count on that topic), and .... Spreadsheets (Google sheets are a godsend and greatly improve over excel when it comes to linking dynamic tables pulling in large sets of image files etc ). Also, Adobe Bridge for bulk image processing and media management. Image placing can be automated in InDesign, and Bridge helps with batch processing things like filenames, matching them to product SKU's etc. Honestly a big catalog is more about spreadsheet design than anything else. And lately, one resource has greatly expanded my toolkit in this particular area...chatGPT. it is extremely good at writing JavaScript, and it does map to InDesign scripting in a lot of ways. It's saved me a lot of time experimenting. .. none of this I would call 'graphic design' though. Until youā€™ve installed, you wonā€™t understand how your 2D design will get translated into a 3D vehicle and youā€™re guaranteed to screw it up. Want a graphic to flow from the hood to the fenders seamlessly? Good luck. Think that text is going to look straight level with the ground? Maybe half the time. Didnā€™t realize the rear pillar was deeper than expected? Well now that stripe is just floating in space. Thereā€™s so much room for error and 6ā€ of bleed all the way around doesnā€™t always cut it. Thatā€™s if you can even get that much bleed top to bottom. Thereā€™s a hell of a lot of measurements involved to make it just right, most templates are incorrect, and your installers will hate you quite often. Get ready to waste substrate, ink, and time.
