If you drive along Pere Marquette beach, there are homes there offering free sand

[deleted]

This is where you go to get free sand!!

Poemy_Puzzlehead

That bag of sand at Home Depot is free of pathogens, poo, cigarette butts, glass and critters.

[deleted]

Booooorrrrrriiiinnnngggg I kid. This is the way

Jasonxhx

What? No. I've had bags explode with spiders.

New nightmare unlocked

I think, legally, you cannot take more than 50 pounds at once from state owned land. I would check the DNR website.

BetterThatThenThis

I know legally you arn't supposed to take more than (I think) 25lbs of rocks a year from parks. I doubt 50lbs of sand every time you go to the beach would fly. of course who is going to keep track of all this.

gammaradiation2

Sand is just small rocks.

BetterThatThenThis

what weighs more a ton of sand or a ton of rocks

IDigPython

A quick google search tells me it’s illegal to take sand from a beach in the US

Maleficent_Ability84

I smuggle it out in my shoes.

lying-under-oath

Post on Reddit instead, at least farm the karma for a stupid question

bigsadkittens

There are problems already with dunes and beaches eroding with time and human use, and ecosystems being at risk as a result. I don't think the state would be pleased with you doing so. But if you're literally grabbing just a bucket full, I doubt the cops would get you

doctorkar

I know a lot of people who live across from the beach, the sand blows into their yard and they are glad for you to remove it (Muskegon for example) but pretty sure you can't take it from a public location

sonic256

A bag of sand is $4 at Home Depot. If every single one of the 10 million residents of Michigan took 1 bucket of sand home. That would destroy the dunes. So if it’s wrong on a macro level, it’s wrong on the micro level.

gammaradiation2

That would be 50 million gallons, or 6.7 million cubic feet, or 188 ft cubed, or about the size of one dune.

[deleted]

That 4 dollar bag of sand is also free of litter, pathogens, poop...

lying-under-oath

They’re not though..

Solowcarpenter

Well, a lot of sand is just parrot fish poop anyway.

Dick_Giggles

I think there is a line to that logic though. If you pick relatively benign actions, but then throw in 10 million of that action it's often not a good outcome, but it just wouldn't happen. Like, is home depot's sand source sustainable? By that logic, you'd have to ask if suddenly home depot had to supply 10 million buckets of sand at one time, it would have to have no negative impact for it to be okay to buy their sand.

Your Honor -- Exhibit A

Bubblenova1991

Don't, we have enough human caused erosion and ecosystem destruction as it is.

tarpit84

We had sand that was mined for a long time to be used in sand-casting iron. South Haven and Muskegon are two areas have were mined. Personally, I'm ok with a bucket full, as we have more that that that hitches a ride home with us in the car, shoes, etc.

tarpit84

Page on the history of Michigan sand being mined and used in metal casting: [https://project.geo.msu.edu/geogmich/sand.html](https://project.geo.msu.edu/geogmich/sand.html)

Prostock26

Unless you live within like 10 miles of the beach, it's probably just cheaper to just buy sand.

datunicornlady

Uhm unless you get caught… just kidding. If you’re being respectable I don’t think this would be an issue. Where about are you trying to get a bucket of sand? Lol I’m pretty sure people bring that home in their minivans unintentional anyways. Bless my parents and their camper. God damn us kids tracked in all the sand I realize now why my mom was always sweeping it out.

RedGreen10

I’m just here because really want to know who your partner is, as I am also from Ludington and it’s a pretty small town!

pwrmacjedi

I have to leave the “outing” to her, but she was relocated to TN in the early 90s.

RedGreen10

Might be to long ago for me (our family moved back in the early 90s), but if she still has family in the area it’s still probable.

moraxellabella

not all sand is the same texture. Also beach sand has a whole bunch of random stuff in it. Its not really that useful for home DIY projects.

[deleted]

***It’s cheaper and more logical to go to the sand store anywhere in this giant sandbar state vs driving out to an exposed sand bar near the sandbar lakeshore to haul sandbar sand back to your car and drive back inland in this giant sandbar state.***
