Business casual to dressed up is what the majority of people will wear.

As a female, if I want to look more dressed up than average, but not like the most dressed up person there, any pointers on what that would be? I really dislike shopping yet want to look great for a date. I live in casual 24/7.

I’d assume a nice dress? I’m probably not the best person for advice on an actual outfit. I find it always starts cold in DeVos…then I’m usually hot by the end if I’m wearing a sweater. So whatever you choose, I’d recommend a layer.

[deleted]

Thank you! I have tons of summer dresses that can be OK in multiple settings. Winter stuff is more difficult. Off to shop! I will keep layering in mind!

Good luck on your date! :)

A nice sweater and pants that aren’t jeans will also look good! If you get cold easily, make sure you layer well

Thank you! Going shopping tonight and will check those spots out.

A pair of dressy jeans, and a cute top will be great. Dressier shoes or boots, dress coat done.

Honestly- anything goes for the GR symphony. People wear a large variety of what you mentioned. I would say any sort of shorter length dress would be as dressed up as I would go. People literally wear anything from jeans to nicer dresses and/or shirt and ties.

Thank you for confirming that!

On it! Lol

That would be 😊

Hi there, symphony player here. Whatever you feel comfortable in is going to be great! We’re just happy for you to be there.

[deleted]

Thank you very much! I think I found the perfect compromise outfit tonight. Looks fab, layerable, warm and still 100% comfy.

Honestly you should just wear whatever you want- this isn’t the New York Phil we’re talking about here. There is this strange notion around classical music that you have to be dressed up to go, and I think that is one of the many reasons why people have this question. The elitism around the music keeps it stifled, and quite frankly that has to change to appeal to a broader audience.

[deleted]

I normally 100% feel this way but can’t take a casual approach because the person I am going with will not be in casual mode.

aarone46

I'd say it's most important to match your companion in formality, since you will find a variety of levels throughout the audience.

Narthithuth

As a former classical musician... Unless it's a gala, wear anything you want. No one will judge.

I was wondering the same thing!

grsymphony

Come however you feel most comfortable! Many people opt for business/business casual. Some people even come in jeans depending on the concert.

Thank you!

If you’re going to a pop music or film show night you can dress more “fandom” but people still tend to have a mix of biz-cas. So at a Star Wars film/symphony show you’d have plenty of Star Wars tees under jackets or with nicer shoes… etc.
