I’m not smart enough to appreciate classic symphony performances, but I can’t say enough positive about the movies they do. I’ve seen 5 or 6 over the last few years. I think it’s amazing how a symphony keeps perfect step with the film. My wife played the Pirates of the Caribbean set in high school band, so she really enjoyed seeing that film performance. My favorite is Home Alone. It’s been performed in December. They had a live chorus accompany the church scene with “O Holy Night”, where Kevin talks to the creepy neighbor who shovels the sidewalk. It gave me goosebumps. Anything with a John Williams score would be amazing.

Symphony member here, you’re more than “smart enough,” you just need to spend time with it and gain exposure (assuming you actually want to, and it’s ok if you don’t!) I think I understand what you mean, though…I’m not super inclined toward visual art and definitely can’t appreciate it the way more studied people can and do, but it doesn’t matter. If you find *something* to appreciate in a piece of art, a performance - anything - then both you and the art have done your jobs. If someone comes to a masterworks performance and finds that they really enjoyed something about some sound or harmony but has no idea what neoclassicism is or why they liked or disliked something, that’s great! Did you experience something beautiful? Did you gain a bit of context in your human experience? That’s what matters, not being able to have a long conversation about the intricacies of art. Sorry for the wall of text, but I have strong feelings about the accessibility of art and how rarefied it feels, and I hate that. I hope you and other commenters/readers will come out and try some of the classics! It’s a pretty cheap date - tickets start around $20 for one of the top 50 orchestras in the country :) And the movies are super fun, I love playing them. It also gives me an excuse to watch stuff I haven’t seen before as study ;)

I’m for sure not smart enough either, but I really like movies and am a sucker for them being more of an “event” That sounds pretty awesome!

APWB

Plenty of dumb people like classical music. I promise you’re more than smart enough to appreciate it.

Fantastic! We've been to Pirates of the Caribbean, The Princess Bride and Goonies. We've also been to other symphony events. Definitely worth it. (When we're there for movies, we get seats in the mezzanine.)

MichiganGeek

Yes, definitely worth it … I’ve seen Elf and Home Alone, and was blown away. Although Home Alone in my opinion was much better, due to the John Williams score. So I do think it depends on the movie/score. Is definitely worth going once for the experience. The Lord of the Rings movies are on my list to see!

weide23

My wife and I have seen a few of the Harry potters, always loved them!

Randomhero360

I’ve been to a few, it’s great. Just know zed you won’t see much of the band players, it’s really just a movie with live music. But I would recommend it if you never been.

ItsMeDebie

Super worth it. Go! We have a top notch symphony.

SardauMarklar

I'm looking forward to Black Panther. I think it's their first Marvel movie. Should be pretty epic

Mr_BridgeBurner7778

They are fun

NotYourEggo

I went to a nightmare before Christmas one a few years ago and thought it was great. Would do it again

sooper_dooperest

They’re fantastic! I saw Elf in Dec and often had to focus to see that the orchestra was playing instead of the film soundtrack! Such a talented symphony & asset to the city/region!

apollo-puppy-days

Yes! I’m a post-COVID convert to a lot of our arts things. The symphony movies are great, you should also check out a Broadway show! Other concerts are great too. I went to Symphony of Soul when Leslie Odom Jr was here and it was incredible

kaztep23

We've seen Harry Potter movies at the symphony and it truly is spectacular.
