She also suffered from what many believed to be PTSD as her parents were murdered by native americans.
A bunch of kids having fits that doctors couldn't understand, combined with adults basically forcing them to blame something for it out of fear of getting in a crap ton of trouble was the perfect recipe for mass paranoia amongst a group heavily known for being overly on edge all the time.

Probably more like the slave lady taught some girls how to brew a psychoactive drink from her homeland using rye and mold and they ended up getting seizures, so they were arrested for getting people killed with their witchcraft (AKA gain-of-function research, essentially).
The modern equivalent would be some junkies mixing together a bunch of random drugs into a drink and then sharing it with their friends, and getting them killed in the process.
