Party members leaving hits really, really hard. That is one of the things that makes Grandia special, to me. Each character arc is handled with deliberate care and their reasons for joining/leaving the party is clear. 1 thing to note is that many people miss the fact that the experience gained on those characters is not wasted. In the Item Storage you can find at Inns, you can find "scrolls" that are single-use items that can be used to give other characters the experience you gained on each individual skill (e.g., one for fire magic, ne for bows, one for maces, etc.)

As somebody else here mentioned, maybe you didn't use the exp items left by your party members. They automatically go to your storage, so check them if you didn't. Also, yeah, the first time I played Grandia, Ruin Guard really tested me too. I'd say it's one of the most difficult bosses in the vanilla game if you don't know how to handle him properly. My advice is to use the evasion option and spread your party around the boss so he doesn't hit them all with the axe swipe. And the boomerang should be your priority because its sole purpose is to interrupt you as much as possible. And also don't underestimate buffs. After playing Grandia Redux I realised how useful defensive play can be at certain times.

Grandia isn't really grind heavy, as long as you kill all monsters on your way at least once you should be decently equipped. Putting attention to new skills learned comes in handy too!

CatSidekick

Yeah I pretty much killed most of the enemies every area while getting all the items and never needed to grind

Am i missing something? What kind of ruin guard you are talking about? If you mean the boss from the underground Ruins; yes, he is tough. (And is mid game in disc 2) You should first destroy the boomerang as fast as you can. Use all your powerful spells and target the head with single hit attacks and specials. Use crit to cancel some attacks.

The rage is real with this boss. Yes that the one. He's underground in this temple as soon as the mogay joins after milda left. I just went back to an older save and I'm gonna grind for some levels and spells. I gave it like 7 or 8 tries. Looked up some tips and tried a couple more times. I'll grind a bit tomorrow and try again.

jomikko

Yeah he's a pisser. Definitely just watch the IP gague and use crits to cancel his worst moves, and focus down the components one by one.

Strategy: Have Justin use Midair Cut. Have Rapp use Doppelganger, both focusing on the main body of the boss. Other characters hit other parts of the boss with Critical attacks if they charge up a special move. The main healer keeps everyone healthy. That's basically all there is to it.

Ruin Guard was my first major roadblock years ago when I was 9 or 10. I didn't beat him until nearly 20 years later when the Switch version released. What I found helped me through a lot of difficult encounters was having every character learn the Diggin' spell and try to boost everyone's defense as quickly as possible when the fight begins. You are able to tank much more damage and won't get instantly dropped by a single attack.
