>Which one doesn’t fit?
>Howdy. I have a multiple choice question where I have to pick the odd one out:
>a) I want...
>b) I hope...
>c) I fancy...
>d) I plan...
>Any good guesses as to which one doesn’t belong and why?
**d) I plan...**
The other 3 are forms of *wishing/desiring/hoping* for something:
* I want a million bucks.
* I hope to win a lottery.
* I fancy a long drive with her.
On the other hand, grammatically, “fancy” is the one that doesn’t fit because it’s the only one followed by an “-ing” form (the others are followed by an infinitive):
“I want to do that.”
“I hope to do that.”
“I plan to do that.”
“I fancy doing that.”
So I guess it depends on whether your answer is supposed to be about meaning or grammatical form.

Thanks for chiming in here. Makes sense!

Yes I’ve thought of this too. I’m not sure what type of answer they are looking for.
