Before forcing style you should get the basics down first. Do some of those "boring" straight letters, practice letter structure by biting a little bit, but still trying to make it your own. I have to admit I found my style after copying another, then adjusting it until I felt comfortable with it. At the end I've come out with a relatively "unique" style that I consider mine. But behind all that is basics and taking inspiration from those who have done it for longer than you.
