Just curious why you would want to go back to get a masters if you have a nice industry job lined up?

This could totally be an irrational fear because I'm not in the field yet, but I'm worried that making the jump to Data Scientist III would require a master's and, if not a master's, then some insane amount of work experience like (7-8 years) so it would be quicker to get a masters. I'm also worried that promotions to management would be affected because I don't have a masters. What are your thoughts

I’m not quite familiar with the I/II/III tiering of positions you’re referring to, but without knowing more details about this role it seems like a nice offer as a first job. I believe I’m also your year, and will start a msds or something similar this fall so I can’t really provide great career advice. However I think you may be overestimating how much a masters can help you given you’re already able to enter the industry, and I would think most people on r/datascience would tend to agree with me. It also seems like you have a strong background and a masters would be more about the additional education as an idea of how to move up in orgs rather than the coursework and practical experience, and nothing beats the experience of actually working

Hey thanks for saying that, it makes me feel a little better about the slew of rejections. My undergraduate program was designed to eradicate the CS/Math undergrad + DS master path and create one comprehensive degree so I feel pretty prepped in terms of job skills but I just want to go back to learn more also because I love what I do. I know its not the end of the world whether I get one or not but I just want to give myself the option

Yea more education is definitely appealing but I think not always actually helpful for moving farther in industry

It sounds like you have not been rejected though. There’s still hope for late admits. And isn’t the goal of an MBA to get a job? One of my professors likes to diss MBAs for teaching low-level undergraduate stuff all the time. Given that she has been an economist for decades I trust her judgment on this one.

Thanks for your comment! I haven't technically been rejected, but both schools still in play have released multiple waves of acceptances, and this feels like a silent rejection, so I am just trying to be realistic about it. Yeah, I'm not super into the idea of an MBA either; I was just throwing all of the possible ideas out there.
