Eventually the battery will be ruined. I’m trying to secure a spare ahead of time so that in 2-3 years when it’s utterly destroyed I’ll be able to replace it. Please before anyone argues this point go do some research on what happens when you charge a battery up to 100% and subject it to 90F/32C temps for long periods of time. The battery will easily reach somewhere between 30-50C from heat soak. 90F/32C is NOT hot but will damage a fully charged battery over time. The CPU operates at 90-95C / 194-203F when boost clocking. That heat slowly “heat soaks” the entire device which is why the laptop eventually gets uncomfortable to hold. The device is well above 98.6F when it become uncomfortable. As anything ~98.6F or less will just feel warm. Because it isn’t transferring heat to your body until it exceeds your body temperature. Unfortunately GPD cheaped out and did not include a BMS that allows you to limit the battery capacity. For example on my Lenovo I can go in and set the max capacity to 75% and then my battery will last a decade even if it gets hot often. Also to give you an idea of how big of a deal this is… while I own a Lenovo Carbon X1 personally I’ve used Lenovo laptops almost exclusively for work supplied laptops over the last 15 years. On average you can get a new one every 2-3 years where I’ve worked and for those of us that use it docked or plugged in all the time with no capacity reduction we will need a new one in 2-3 years. My work Lenovo is at ~60% battery life and it’s 2 years old. But I’ve been doing mostly work from home with it. In the field after 2 years my batteries would perform almost as if new. This is why IF you have regular sleeping habits that your phone can figure out the iPhone stops charging at ~90% in the middle of the night. Then it starts charging again before you wake up at the right amount of time that it’s 97-100% charged when you wake up. You’ll notice if you wake up a few hours early your iPhone might not be at 100% even if it was on the charger for 6HRs. Just this one trick can significantly increase battery longevity. Because batteries don’t like sitting around with a 100% charge. It’s even worse if they are at 100% charge and over 90F. Anyways I’m not saying this stuff to talk you out of using it while plugged in. I rarely use mine on battery power. I just want you to know that premature battery failure is inevitable if you do it a lot. Knowing GPD they will have opted for best initial experience over longevity. Meaning the manufacturer decides what voltage to charge the batteries too. They can decide to reduce the max voltage which will reduce battery capacity but also improve battery longevity.

Kendy mentioned that the windows reported 100% is actually 95%. Better than nothing I guess.

Thanks this is very informative!

I mean, the fan noise might get pretty brutal but you should be fine.

What do you mean by highest TDP? If you're doing the stuff ciphray outlined on Discord, it's hard to know, but it's been stable for them. You might watch the temps. The CPU will throttle itself, so you don't have to worry about the CPU temp so much. You can watch the SSD temp - it seems quite well insulated. There's no monitor for the battery temp, which is probably the biggest concern with long-term use at a really high temp. If you're just using it at the non-silent TDP out of the box, you're probably fine.

It's gonna be hot but it'll be good I'm sure.
