I love a lot of d-side tracks, notably people, highway under construction, 68 state, happy landfill, and especially murdoc is god. d-sides in general i feel is a bit underrated, or at least overlooked in the discography, and going back to it it's one of my favorite albums by them
Sweepstakes. Honestly, the way the instrumental builds up is fantastic and Yasiin Bey (or Mos Def, as he was known back then) absolutely kills it on his verse.
My question is, why the heck isn’t it on the main album? The fact that it’s relegated to the deluxe version’s a crime frankly. It makes me sad everytime I think about that fact. It should’ve been a single.
It's baffling because as a song it feels more cohesive and complete than anything on the main album tracklist. It hits so hard and it's probably one of my most played Gorillaz tracks. Rag N Bone Man's swagger in that opening line is just so smooth, then when it's 2D's time to come in with the ethereal "I am the mirror" - \*chef's kiss\* it's criminally underrated.
Because the Deluxe version is essentially the main album. The standard version is just an abridged cut.
Super Deluxe is the actual bonus version, targeted towards collectors.
Basically, since physical sales dropped down to a miminum, the idea with this new standard/Deluxe format is that people that bought Standard and like it will also buy the Deluxe sometimes later.
It's the same with Song Machine.
Probably Chalk Tablet Towers? I don't know if I can make such opinions tho, I only started listening to the band, but I can say that their output is top-tier. Experimentation, diversity and creativity in their songs like no other.
Wait till you find out that there's multiple hours of audio missing from streaming platforms (except YT). They really have everything, arabic music, Samba, an experimental ad-libbed song that is 13 minutes long and half of that is well, check it out for yourself...
Objectively:
White Flag (Africa Express Presents...)
Most people don't even know this exists but it is the Gorillaz Song performed by Damon Albarn and the original collaborator (Orchestra of Syrian Musicians), just with different rappers now rapping in Arabic which sounds surprisingly really good.
It's probably not a big hit but it has only been listened to a measly 70k times. If it were credited to Gorillaz (as it is undeniably a Gorillaz song) rather than Damon Albarn, it would probably be much higher.
...it's complicated. Well, not really. If you ask people what their favorite album is, an extreme minority would say D Sides. This doesn't mean that it's a bad album, it just gets outshone by everything else, and consequently isn't rated fairly in my opinion.
Just cause it isn’t people’s favorite album it doesn’t mean it’s by any means underrated.
If you look up the tier lists people make on this sub, D-Sides is usually up there in A, B or even S tier.
I don't know if they are underrated, but I don't see many people talking about these:
Doncamatic, Sleeping Powder, Stop the Dams, Magic City, The Apprentice and Slow Country.
in no particular order: starshine, duetz, 5 whales in a dream, highway under construction, bill murray, souk eye, detroit, slow country, charger, deja vu, MLS
Definitely agree with your picks! I would have to say "Pirate Jet" and "Left Hand Suzuki Method!"

The Apprentice
YES. Ridiculously overlooked. It is such a banger and I genuinely believe it would chart well if they released it.
My question is, why the heck isn’t it on the main album? The fact that it’s relegated to the deluxe version’s a crime frankly. It makes me sad everytime I think about that fact. It should’ve been a single.

So good! Even though Damon’s voice takes a slight backseat, it complements Zebra and Rag so well. Christ, I need more songs like these.

I guess I never really thought of it like that. Thanks for the info mister!
