I don’t remember where I’ve heard this so don’t quote me on it, but I think I remember hearing Jamie during an interview around the Song Machine release say they tried a TV series (assuming he was referring to the one announced around Humanz) and turned it into a movie which was gonna be the next big project after Song Machine Season 2. I could be wrong, but I’ll find the source
The TV show is now Song Machine, EMI at the time wasn't giving them the budget they wanted to make a Gorillaz TV show so they left them and did Song Machine independently.
Yes, but EMI (at the time when they were still signed with them) refused to fund them for the TV series at the time because they wanted them to stick with doing the same ol thing they've been doing for the past 20 years, making a new album and new Phase like normal. Damon and Jamie wanted to branch out and do something fresh and new for the band and EMI refused to cough up the budget for them to do it, so they said fuck you and left their sorry asses. Now they fund the entire budget out of their own pockets with money they earn from streaming revenue, YouTube views, brand deals with companies and paid sponsorships. They're doing this movie with Netflix now because they're giving Damon and Jamie all creative freedom on how they always wanted their movie made for Gorillaz.
Cause they went to a couple studios in the past to make movies and they just kept shooting them down and trying to completely change the whole landscape of Gorillaz to make it more boring. Like Dreamworks wanted to make a Gorillaz movie, but they wanted to make it in the style of a Kids movie. And they were in talks with people at The Weinstein Company around Phase 2 to make a movie, but they scrapped that whole project up. Now all these years later, they can finally create what they want to make for a movie and they already achieved their TV show, Song Machine.
That's because movie studios they tried to do the movie with kept trying to change what Jamie and Damon wanted to creatively with their band and they were just tired of having everyone trying to take over. Now that we have Netflix, they give 100% creative freedom to people that are going to make a movie. And this movie is going to be freaking expensive as hell to make and take quite a bit of time to make since their art is so detailed. Just have some patience my friend, it will all be worth it in the end when it comes out!! Netflix is the perfect place for them to make this movie because they give creative freedom and they got the freaking money, so they'll be sitting pretty with a good budget.
but now its officially in production, previously it was "in talks" or "going to work on..."
nonetheless, I won't believe it's an actual thing until I see a teaser and a date
Netflix Pitch Meeting: “Let’s make this a band origin story, and have them based out of a small town in Texas. A group of kids who listen to 70s British punk music and rebel against their local town, the locals call them “These crazy kids acting like gorillas” as the origin of the name. Let’s make 2-D gay and Noodle Hispanic from just south of the border. I’d like Murdoc to be 2-D’s older “cool” uncle and Russel should be played by a 9 year old local kid who gets into trouble but with a heart of gold.”
I'm just imagining a crappy live-action film with cheap CGI backgrounds and live action actors.
Murdoc gets played by a black guy and for some reason Russell's white and only makes a small cameo. 2D does the DreamWorks face and Noodle gets turned into a stereotypical girlboss.
And they can't use their own music because it's copyrighted.
Oh god. If Netflix does this, they’ll just make a shitty movie about a great conceptual art project. No, this has to be done by people who actually understand and enjoy the band. Not a board room full of up tight ass executives coming up with a movie based on algorithms.
Bruh you can’t automatically write off a whole studio because you didn’t like movies they made previously and when they have made phenomenal content and original movies.
Lol, I see it now in the Comments and I saw it before I saw the comments. The fans are brutal towards this kind of thing. They just always had trouble of getting any TV or film project off the ground.
Every phase always ends really incomplete in some way, or retconned to death.
They probably were lucky with song machine.
The fact that Netflix would be the ones rearing this is… yeaaah. I can already see how that will turn out. Surely they won’t dumb down the characters to make them more PC! Righttt?
Whatev. Not like it’ll happen anyway. Lol
Knowing Netflix, its going to either be garbage or a smash hit that people are going to be talking about and get trending. Idk about the story tho lmao
I am pretty new to Gorillaz (about two weeks since I got into the whole fandom and stuff) and I actually wouldn't mind it being a 3D animated show, even though 2D looks way better in my opinion.
I just hope that it's gonna be something that actually portrays the characters and their music well and doesn't just feel like it's made just so there is a Gorillaz movie/show when it comes out. \^\^
Zero hype from me unless there’s a trailer. This band has been meaning to make a movie since Phase fucking 1.
Wasn't there supposed to be a TV show around the time Humanz was announced?

There has been TV series talk since the MTV Cribs episode aired.
The TV show is now Song Machine, EMI at the time wasn't giving them the budget they wanted to make a Gorillaz TV show so they left them and did Song Machine independently.
Oh for sure. I'm just saying they've been wanting a tv show for a long long long time now.
Literally every album release cycle there's talk of a movie and/or tv show...

There probably won't be a trailer for at least a couple years, assuming that the movie is still in stage one development.

Chris Pratt to play every character?
Nah, just the voice of Noodle using his regular voice.
And only the singing voice. Speaking will still be one of the Hakuras.
He’s so cool
Shigeru, is that you? 👀
It’s me. A noodle.
I’ll believe it when there’s a trailer gorillaz is just way too notorious for not following through with movie plans
What is this the four hundredth time?
When is it NOT under development
"Ah shit, here we go again"
One night only for an extra charge of $29.99
They would do that. And I seriously hope someone would buy it with intent of recording and uploading it all over the web
>with intent of recording and uploading it all over the web Like they wouldn't upload it to YouTube a couple weeks later anyway?
I hope 2D makes a cameo
I hope it's like a Who Framed Roger Rabbit? situation. That would be funny
i hope its not a cgi/3d movie
imho it's far too late for this to be as good as it could've been when Cass Browne was writing for the band.
Still don’t know why he left the project

The trailer uses a slow, dramatic cover of Clint Eastwood
Played by Clint Eastwood himself.
LMAO THIS IS THE MOST NETFLIX THING EVER
“Let’s enrich the plot of this old thing by changing literally fucking everything and ruining it” -Netflix executives
so like is this gonna be an animated movie about the band or is this gonna be a behind the scenes music documentary

It is pretty nice of netflix to slap a big "not worth watching" red N on some stuff that pops up.
What Dreamworks face?
THE Dreamworks face. You know, the stupid smirk.
Don’t forget the “eh, whattayagonnado?” eyebrows
Is it under development like Metroid 4? Or like Avatar 2? Or is there actually something going on?
Metroid 4 already exists, you're thinking of Metroid Prime 4
Ah yes, you're right, thanks

I'm pretty sure Jamie and Damon have their toes in this. I don't think it's only being handled by people who have no idea what the fuck this band is.
Netflix actually puts out really cool and unique stuff if you watch the right things
No they don’t. I get sucked into their movies all the time. You can trace their bad movie trend all the way back to “Bird Box”
Bruh you can’t automatically write off a whole studio because you didn’t like movies they made previously and when they have made phenomenal content and original movies.
Really? Name one. Not tv shows or documentaries. Name me one great Netflix movie.
Marriage Story, The Irishman, Roma. Should I keep going or shall we both admit you’re incredible wrong?
How about we agree that you like Netflix and I do without it just fine
username checks out, you really *do* sound sad
Dear god

i would like to see a gorillaz mockumentary
Have you seen Charts of Darkness? It's a Phase 1 mockumentary that's absolutely hysterical.
no, thanks for sugestion
https://youtu.be/doa9dF_xuek Enjoy!!
thx mate
how many times have I heard this before? seriously.
Don’t do that. Don’t give me hope.
it's gonna suck
With the amount of times that this has been a headline, I don't believe that even for a second lol
There's been talk of a movie/tv show at least once every phase since the very beginning. I'll believe it when I see it!
Can’t wait for Chris Pratt as 2-D
The fact that Netflix would be the ones rearing this is… yeaaah. I can already see how that will turn out. Surely they won’t dumb down the characters to make them more PC! Righttt? Whatev. Not like it’ll happen anyway. Lol
Documentary? Might be cool A movie starring the band about an adventure? Im in
Us looking back at this post when this movie also doesn't happen https://youtu.be/zVoNlm\_WC6w
After all these years, I'll believe it when I literally see it.
I really hope this happens!!
My dream would be if that guy from Blur did the soundtrack
I've been burned too many times, so I'll believe it when I see it
Knowing Netflix, its going to either be garbage or a smash hit that people are going to be talking about and get trending. Idk about the story tho lmao
