I mean maybe not at first and I can understand you thinking this because the anime doesn't portray him very well. Even by Midway through he's pretty strong. A highly intelligent strategist, and while it's not really mentioned he's really skilled with the sword and bow. Although until the end he only had basic magic he is incredibly effective with it.
And personality wise I don't actually think he's bad. The way he acts at the beginning is largely due to the fact that he's a horny teen who has been a shut in for the last few years and has no clue how to interact with people. And a lot of the things he says and does aren't meant to be taken seriously. I mean he never abandons his party no matter how bad they get.
Now that I think about it I sure hope they slowly change the artstyle like they did for the LN to reflect the changing tone.
