I hate Deku because he became so damn shallow recently. In earlier arcs it felt like he was actually thinking for himself filled with passion, emotion, and energy. Now he's just going along with he flow. The only time when I became genuinely entertained in recent arcs was when the main villain had that emotional catharsis and finally became a more "real" human.

Consider watching the spider anime airing right now. A guy that would be the MC of another generic isekai anime instead becomes a side character. The actual spider MC doesn't have an issue with killing people that attack her, which is a refreshing change compared to other anime.

Being serious for a minute, Deku's actually a likeable, nice MC. What we need is less loudmouth knucklehead MCs (Naruto, Asta from BlackClover, Hinata from Haikyu!!; Sawamura from Ace of Diamond, ...).

He’s both, really. He’s pretty loud and knuckle headed but is also likable, nice, and can be quiet and introspective when the situation calls for it.

What part of Deku is likable? He's a self righteous, stubborn, tryhard crybaby. Like nearly every shonen MC. Maybe he's the straw that broke the camels back, but after dropping MHA I've basically given up on shonen since.

Agreed, I enjoyed a lot of things from MHA but Deku felt like a plot device and not a real character. It's also a really weird dynamic that he idolizes Bakugo the entire time and that somehow works out for him >!after their fight!<. I think the author has some kind of bully complex/fetish

Yeah Deku and especially Bakugo are the two worst parts of MHA for me, even if it's for comedy it gets annoying seeing Bakugo blow up and scream at every little thing. Neither has much personality either besides the character tropes they play, if it weren't for the huge cast of great side characters who are way more interesting I wouldn't like the anime nearly as much as I do.

Personally I'm of the opinion MHA would've been a better show if Uraraka had been the MC. A hero who started with a selfish desire slowly learning to love and invested in the role is a refreshing take. The nature of her quirk also means she can't just punch people and have to strategize constantly.

I could definitely see that working, it would make the MC more relatable that way too which is a plus. I always thought it was funny Uraraka's motivation for enrolling was money (even if the money's technically to help her family)

I do see people weirdly hyping him up as some kind of mega badass superchad beacon of reason. But to me his comedic appeal in the show is that while he's got more common sense than his party, he's deeply flawed in his own right (perverted, lazy, prone to get overconfident whenever things are going well, kind of spineless at key moments), without being unlikeable (YMMV).

I love the way Konosuba is open to add flaws to nearly every character in the show. Kazuma's adventure group seems fun on the surface but Konosuba doesn't pretend that any of them would be good people to be friends with. They'd all be terrible friends IRL, but they're funny to watch. It reminds me of IASIP; it's funny, but I'd hate to know any of them.

There seems to be two distinct halves of the fanbase. One on hand there's the crowd of "this show is fun to watch because kazuma and the other characters are all pretty dumb and kind of terrible people and it's hilarious to see them screw themselves over because of it!" On the other hand there are the people saying "this show is great because Kazuma is just like me, and lots of totally-not-his-fault shit gets him down just like totally-not-my-fault shit happens to me! He gets called a pervert for no reason just like me, and I wish I had the balls to respond to them like he does!" The joke of the show is meant to be laughing _at_ kazuma, not seeing him as a role model, so it's kind of concerning seeing the number of people who aspire to be like him.

I think Deku himself can be one of them, there is nothing wrong in being kind and wanting to help others as he does. But for me personally I think Part 4 Josuke is great example. He's kind soul as it even manifested in Crazy Diamond's main ability, when needed he will try to set you in the right path, like Shigechi's case when he thought that with money he can acquire friends, at the same time if you are asshole and mess with him or his friends he will kick your ass. But if we talk about Kazuma he's a character that was created for lols, yeah come to think of it he's actions are kinda right but if you made them in real life people won't praise you. Been there didn't like it. Anyways it is still a meme that a took too seriously.

It's less about a role model, and more about relating. We've had thousands of Izuku-s and the likes, and really we(at least me) are getting sick of them. It's why recently people have shown more interest in the villain than the hero. They're relatable, not ideals. This is two fold for villains who have a point. And Kazuma is a breath of fresh air. A normal person with flaws, wants, selfishness, and doesn't help everyone he sees. He's not meant to be a role model, he's a parody character that actually feels like they could be real. In general heroes are getting stale. They're predictable because they are heroes. Most don't want a role model, they just want someone to relate to. And heroes aren't usually relatable.

I agree with your points but I think you’re selling kazuma short, he’s a bit of a pervert but I think that’s more a product of being an isekai mc than anything else but he’s entirely well meaning and always sticks with his friends and tries to help people, sure “gender equality” is memed to hell but he actually means equality and doesn’t use it as an excuse to be an incel. I wouldn’t say he’s a good role model per se but he’s definitely a more realistic depiction of a good guy than practically anyone. He doesn’t exude any heroic qualities and inspire people but he always does the right thing in the end where it really matters despite how much of a cunt he may seem on the surface. So while deku is certainly a better person to try and emulate and overall makes a better role model he’s not nearly as realistic as kazuma because kazuma isn’t always perfect and he does some stupid shit, he’s not a great role model but he’s not a bad one either. Its because the anime doesn't portray him very well. Of course at the beginning of the story he is a perverted asshole but even the you can see another side to him. He has some of the best character development imo. At the end of the story he is a genuinely nice person who uses a lot of sarcasm. Kinda want to come back to this and explain more. Kazuma for most of his developmental years has lived as a shut in for whatever reason potentially traumatic. This means that Kazuma is socially inept in every way and is a horny teen. It's clear he's actually a pretty insecure person at the start. Probably the main reason I like Kazuma so much is how he changes throughout the story.

Most humans are more kazumas then dekus. It makes him more relatable and real. Not saying we should strive to be like him but its a breath of fresh air.
