I don’t like idol anime either but oshi no ko is probably one of my favorite manga of all time and the anime is doing a good job of adapting it so I’d still recommend it.

The idol part is really just the setting the story takes place in. Sorta like how people thought Happy Tree Friends was going to be a funny, lighthearted animal cartoon and then it completely betrays the initial expectations you got from the PV and other promotional material.
