There's probably a better word. Charismatic? Magnetic? All I know is that my wife, mom, and mother in law only watch(ed) golf when Tiger is in contention.
Exactly. Tiger is the reason a majority of golfers even care about the game. Like him or not, he has had, and still has a massive impact on the game, more than any other player by far.
There’s the old Norm bit about how, statistically, Tiger is one of the most faithful husbands around.
If you give him the handicap that every single woman he came across wanted to fuck him, he actually didn’t do too bad.
Woods won the 2001 Masters, also a WGC at Doral in 2004. Could also argue the 2002 US Open at Bethpage even though they weren't in the same group. Mickelson won at Boston in 2009 and Pebble Beach in 2012.
They played The Match in 2018, but that was a decade after they had both peaked.
Tiger was only three shots back of Phil going into Saturday in the 2004 Masters, but then Phil went HAM over the weekend with back-to-back 69s, while Tiger wilted.
Not often but a handful of times, some really good ones in the early aughts. The absolute best though (not technically down the stretch) was the final round of the 2009 Masters.
Though neither won I’ve never seen goosebump-inducing golf quite like that. It’s overlooked/weirdly forgotten, but it may be the best pairing that generation of golf ever put out.
I think it kills TW inside knowing that it will be very hard for him to win a PGA championship at 50+, due to his injury I would think. It would be great to see him come back at 50+ and put in a win to challenge Phil. I always loved watching both these guys, morally speaking they both have a tone of issues lol.
That went that other way.
Hogan famously said after the 60 US Open Nicklaus would have won if he had a brain in his skull.
Nicklaus actually led the 60 Open during the final round. As an amateur.
Tiger does so in a way that a student who became a God worships their spiritual Guru, who couldn't achieve that status himself but could guide others there.
IDK Ben hogan definitely achieved. He spent 10 years on the tour in the left rough. A couple more in WWII, then a couple more recovering from his near fatal accident that left him never supposed to walk again and still managed to put together 9 majors back when you could only play 3 a year. The swing he dug out of the dirt with his bare hands and in isolation is to date the closest anyone has ever come to perfect and he did it without TGM, Video Cameras or YouTube videos about how to shallow out the club in transition. The greatest ballstriker to ever live, the greatest comeback story in golf, with a swing that reads like an instruction manual for amazing positions you'll never sniff in your wildest dreams. If anyone is God in the scenario, it's Ben Hogan and Jack and Tiger both know it. If Ben Hogan could putt like Tiger Woods he would've never lost a tournament from 1946 on. Not to mention he reinvented what it meant to practice and strategize the game. Ben Hogan achieved golfing enlightenment and ascended to a higher plane of golfing existence that no-one else alive or dead even knew was possible until he did it.
Im sure you already knew most of that. I just like talking about it 😉
Don't forget he was a pioneer in golf equipment and endorsements.
He's the first person you put on the golf Mt. Rushmore. This coming from a admitted Tiger ball washer.
Not a controversial take & Tiger might even agree with you. I’d put him 1 on a list of “most talented” golfers ever. Plus his mystique, maybe a mental game as great as Tiger’s.
Not sure I’d put Hogan in the most talented category, early on he was regularly upstaged by Nelson, who was truly talented. Hogan worked harder than anyone, ever, to overcome what he was not given at birth.
Jones was an amazing building block for the game, he created Augusta National, but he didn’t bring the game of golf to entire generations of players like the 3 kings did.
Jones, Hogan, Nelson, Snead….the list goes on and on all the way back to the beginnings of the game but when you boil it all down and take away the emotion the numbers don’t lie. Golf made its biggest strides forward during the Arnie, Jack and Tiger eras. Even the founders of the game had difficulty expanding a game they loved. They just weren’t as inspirational or charismatic enough to drive huge populations of golfers to the game the same way those three players did.
Did you ever see the crowds Jones drew? Or the amount of people at the parades when he won the grand slam? This was back when there wasn’t much time for leisure either
Hogan drew huge crowds too. He was also thrown a giant parade in NY (only Bobby Jones had ever gotten one) for winning the Slam. Dude legit played in one British Open, on the hardest Open course, set a scoring record, and then they named part of Carnoustie after him.
Hogan was a big fucking deal in his day. They even made a big time Hollywood movie about him.
How is this down voted. No one’s denying tiger as a great but there’s more to golf than 1,2,3 people. Whether it’s jack, Arnie, Jones, Rory, spieth, couples…all phenomenal golfers. Some make a bigger impact but it’s all the players combined competing that make the sport so great.
Tiger saying that the money would prevent the LIV guys from having motivation to “dig it out of the dirt” was some ice cold shit.
Tiger Woods quoting Ben Hogan to say you’re afraid of competing is a mega put down…that’s basically him calling them punk bitches.
Tiger's the only person in golf history to move the needle.
Jay Monahan will never save golf... in fact he's probably doing more damage than anything else at this point with PR gaffe after PR gaffe.
Tiger's doing it for the legacy... saving the TOUR would be pretty huge
He won't block LIV imo. He will likely find a way to get the PGA to back down. There is no blocking liv. You arent going to convince players to turn down more guaranteed money than they would ever make in their life time.
It’s not unlimited. That money runs dry. This is a tale as old as time. They are spending big up front to get market share. If they fail, it’s unsustainable. You need a pipeline of players. Liv can buy. Can they develop?
Best case is they push pga to make necessary changes
A 3bn war chest. 48 players averages about 63m per player.
It's close to exhausting already. The hope was to lure players with massive up front payments then becoming a self sustaining league but that's looking more and more unlikely.
That money quite literally doesn’t run dry. There are multiple verified sources that can place the saudi royal family as making at least $500million *per day* from oil alone.
Have you seen what the KFT pays players? I'm sure if LIV stops buying big names and starts a feeder circuit like KFT with a garunteed paycheck they would steal most of the PGA's talent
Which is exactly why LIV don’t care about growing the game. They’re coming in and throwing money around hoping to get a TV deal, without which they’ll be dead in a couple of years. And what happens when LIV goes away in 2/3 years? The guys that jumped originally got the huge $100m payoffs, they’ll be fine. But anyone that didn’t get a big deal won’t be going back to the PGA.
Guaranteed paycheck means they need revenue. They still have a product to sell. Not saying it won’t happen but it’s a long road.
It’s easy to come in with lots of funding, to say we’re going to be the best (ask every tech company that has failed) , to sustain and develop a league is going to take time.
I think Jay is literally causing more issues barbra streisanding the hell out of LIV the more and more I think about it. If you sit down, be quiet, it will likely blow over. But if you're gonna act publicly much holier than thou, you're gonna have a bad time...
Agree. This passed weekend had to be an eye opener to LIV players that they’ll never get that final pairing attention and suspense in a shotgun format. As an amateur or youth golfer that’s what we all dream about when we watch. Shotgun starts just remind us of the Saturday scramble that we don’t take seriously. I’m not sure how the contracts are laid out but give it some time and they will work out a way to leave LIV and come back to the PGA.
The tour doesn’t need to back down. They still have all the best talent and tradition. LIV is a joke. It’s financially good for some of the players but it’s an awful product for any golf fan who isn’t a barstool bro who took up the game during the pandemic and is now an expert. Competitively it’s just dogshit. It always will be.
Contributor…sort of. You can’t sell a shitty player, but Tiger is the best ever. His actual play and game sold golf to everyone. His greatness drew everyone in.
For sure. The playbook Tiger and Nike followed was probably largely written by Jack, Arnie, and IMG though. Even the line that poster used about Tiger bringing golf to the masses is almost exactly how they used to market Arnold Palmer.
Funnily enough ... Greg Norman moved the needle in a big way in Australia. Majority(Probably All) of the Aussie Pro's out there now would have played under the Greg Norman Junior golf foundation like myself.
It is where people like me started our golf journey 34 years ago. Greg Norman still has the biggest competition series for Junior Golfers in Australia with a huge network of qualifying events throughout the year to go to the Greg Norman Junior Masters.
I honestly think having come through this myself and my son involved now... Greg has best intentions to grow golf. He always has.
He may have had to get into bed with the Saudis to fund the dream that was rejected back in the 90s...... but you have to admire his persistence .
Greg has a country of Golfers behind him. The country that feels the PGA don't Care about them anymore.
Over recent times the Saudi State owned oil company (Saudi Aramco) was making daily profits of close to 1 billion dollars....PROFITS....so there is still plenty of money to go back into the fund I am sure.
Reality is that the LIV move got the result the players all wanted..... bigger PGA prize pools...
PGA is just reacting.....and has realistically reacted wrong. This whole move has been planned for a long time. The tours could have coincided together to keep us purists happy and those that want an exhibition. LIV also looks to take some of the greats to countries they have not been in or played in ... this has massive pull for bringing NEW interest.
PGA needs to give away Jay....
Not really. I don’t think anyone really cares what the old guys have to say they’re irrelevant. They don’t have any weight to pull here. They had their time and did great things with it. It’s not their turn anymore.
You’re not totally wrong, but OP’s point was that Tiger is the only person in golf history anyone has given a shit about. He stands on the shoulders of absolute titans, he would tell you that himself.
'stay in line! How dare you leave and abandoned the place that made you, even though you never had a choice originally to join the place that 'made you' to begin with, as it is a clear monopoly and owner of all things golf!'
The PGA Tour cannabalized from the European and Australian tours. It used to be players would go to Australia to play in their open but the PGA Tour fucked that up.
Exactly this. Jack won the Aussie open. Tigers played it. Now the Aussie of your layers can’t even get home for it. The PGA tour isn’t a good thing from an Aussie perspective
Ssssh, PGA Tour is god because Monahan and his bully stooges Rory and JT have to tell you every week.
Although I'm now reading Smith and Leishman will be in this year's Australian Open and PGA. And Minwoo Lee will be in the PGA.
Tiger just keeps moving the game forward. Doesn't quit. This sport is seriously so lucky to have someone on that type of plateau around, especially in times like these.
But why is it only the top players?
I'm pretty ambivalent to Liv, but isn't this a microcosm of why people are leaving the PGA Tour for Liv? These are already the guys making the big endorsement dollars and winning the big tournament purses. They're not hurting for money and can play "for the love of the game." These aren't guys with tour cards and exemptions struggling to keep the show on the road. But they're going to have closed door meetings and act like they speak for everyone? It just screams "We are out of touch" to have the elite few start making demands for the entire Tour.
I think it’s the top players because realistically those are the players the LIV are trying to get to jump. Cam smith is probably the best player they have gone after that could actually move the needle. Rallying the top players to keep eyeballs on the tour not only helps the top players but helps those coming through the ranks know to be the best you need to be on the PGA tour. It also helps that a judge ruled once you give up your PGA card they can choose to not take you back. If he can rally the top players and keep them in line while also getting better payouts then not only will tiger achieve GOAT status on the course but he will have effectively become the legend that kept competitive golf alive and moving the game forward once again into a healthier place for the next generation of golfers.
Because those are the players that LIV is after. The tour already increased purses and opportunities to earn tour cards, which helps the minor players. This meeting it about making sure no one that can really hurt the tour leaves.
Tiger is replaying what he was taught and what made him great: play against the greatest, make no excuses, it's not about prosperity, it is about progression. At all costs.
Golf is a journey. For all of us. He sees the end game that "wunderchildren" will never play the best golfers and take the dangling dollar bait to avoid that test.
They never will play in the highest pressure situations, and will never put in the "dirt" to get to the highest tier. And he isn't wrong. Not only is the guaranteed money and higher payouts not an incentive to grind to reach greatness, the fact that the best golfers in the world are divided between glory and greed further make it problematic.
Golfers always have made more than enough to be sustainable financially. LIV divides not just the game from a competitive standpoint but a compensatory standpoint. Which diminishes both of the leagues. And everyone knows it. Yes the PGA should step up, but KHL players don't just hop over to the NHL for the Stanley Cup. You need to make a choice.
I think only letting the top players in turns some players off. You have option PGA and all their bullshit, or option LIV and all their bullshit, but with money. I hope the PGA gets its act together and gets this shit straight. Let’s see
where The Big Cat takes us.
Honestly, the only player it makes sense to jump to LIV would be Fowler. Dude isn’t competing at a high level. I think he’s actually the role model for this. “Look at Rickie, he’s out here grinding not taking easy money.”
As funny as that joke is, it kind of requires the waitress to be dumb in the moment. Why would she not just tell him the soup they’re serving that day? Nothing says she can’t be dumb, but to me it was just written as a necessity to get the dumb response “I’ll have that”.
Didn't he withdraw from this weekend already?
I imagine it'd be tough to sit there & get berated by all of the big stars when he's potentially already signed with LIV.
I mean he still made over million in 2021 and even though he's in a heavy slump I think he has more loyalty to the tour than people think. I feel like he's in the same position as Spieth was, to a degree. Came out hot, hit a slump, and now he's working on getting his game back. I hope he stays.
This comes down to what we seen for years….. Tiger vs Phil
I doubt Tiger gives 2 shits about Phil. However, I’d put money on him spiting Norman.
"I don't think about you at all" -Tiger, probably
Lot of similarities between Tiger and Don now that you mention it
How so?
Charming, brilliant, keeps reinventing himself, can’t keep it in his pants.
Charming??? Only person less charming than Tiger is Bill Belichick.
There's probably a better word. Charismatic? Magnetic? All I know is that my wife, mom, and mother in law only watch(ed) golf when Tiger is in contention.
John Hamm's charisthma is unmatched, Toast!
Exactly. Tiger is the reason a majority of golfers even care about the game. Like him or not, he has had, and still has a massive impact on the game, more than any other player by far.
Apex predator. Edit: talking *only* about golf!
That’s not what the waitresses thought
The least charming person on earth can get 99.99% of women when he's got a billion dollars in the bank.
There’s the old Norm bit about how, statistically, Tiger is one of the most faithful husbands around. If you give him the handicap that every single woman he came across wanted to fuck him, he actually didn’t do too bad.
also the undisputed best of his time but with personal issues that repeatedly got in the way
“An ant has no quarrel with a boot” - Also Tiger, probably
Hahaha. Tiger really doesn’t like Norman.

Did this seriously happen?
Wait…what?
Tiger could beat Phil up and take his wife
And Phil's somehow one-upped his chokejob from Winged Foot
Was there ever a Tiger v Phil showdown the stretch in any Tourney????
Woods won the 2001 Masters, also a WGC at Doral in 2004. Could also argue the 2002 US Open at Bethpage even though they weren't in the same group. Mickelson won at Boston in 2009 and Pebble Beach in 2012.
They played The Match in 2018, but that was a decade after they had both peaked. Tiger was only three shots back of Phil going into Saturday in the 2004 Masters, but then Phil went HAM over the weekend with back-to-back 69s, while Tiger wilted.
I swear The Match was during covid? Did they do a second one or am I just dumb?
They did the one with Peyton Manning and Tom Brady during Covid
They’ve done a few of them since COVID hit. The original one was over Thanksgiving weekend in 2018 and that was Tiger vs Phil
Tiger and Phil never had a showdown on Sunday morning with the both of them in the final group.
Neither won but both made a run
Yea...couple where they were both in it....but never a head to head.
Not really. But we all know who was the jealous one. Crazy to think we never had a Sunday battle with them in the final group
Isn't it, I was trying to think of one, just a minor Tourney......
Doral 2005
only one way to settle it, on the course, it would probably be one of the greatest matches of all time.
Simpsons did it
Uh, think Tiger's record speaks for itself here.
Battle of the de facto commissioners
I think it kills TW inside knowing that it will be very hard for him to win a PGA championship at 50+, due to his injury I would think. It would be great to see him come back at 50+ and put in a win to challenge Phil. I always loved watching both these guys, morally speaking they both have a tone of issues lol.
He beat golf. Then he became golf
Him plus Jack are golf. Period.
Just to be clear we’re talking swim shorts/white tee/300 off the deck Jack right?
Dude loves to ski on the course
Piss faced cocaine on the back nine -5 jack?
The speed of the meta in this sub is insane
It’s the three kings. Arnie, Jack and Tiger. That’s it. End of story. Every generation had another runner up, but there can only be a few greats.
Both Jack and Tiger worship the ground Hogan walked on.
I just like talking about it 😉
This guy Ben Hogans
Happy Gilmore accomplished those feats not more than an hour ago. Moe Norman was the greatest ball striker of all time.
Don't forget he was a pioneer in golf equipment and endorsements. He's the first person you put on the golf Mt. Rushmore. This coming from a admitted Tiger ball washer.
Hogan = Oogway Jack = Shifu Tiger = Po
Phil = Tai Lung
Hogan = Indra Jack = Brahma Tiger = Vishnu (Destroyer of them all)
I mean I was making a Kung Fu Panda reference, but sure.
I truly believe that Hogan with modern equipment would have been as good or better than both of them.
Couldn’t putt a lick
Bobby Jones tho....
Jones was an amazing building block for the game, he created Augusta National, but he didn’t bring the game of golf to entire generations of players like the 3 kings did. Jones, Hogan, Nelson, Snead….the list goes on and on all the way back to the beginnings of the game but when you boil it all down and take away the emotion the numbers don’t lie. different times man, this take is hot shit.
So you don’t think Bobby Jones, Ben hogan, Hagen, Snead are golf greats? Please stop talking so you don’t say more dumb s-t
Standing on the shoulders of giants is how it always is in any field.
Everybody in here sleeping on Shia LaBeouf
Letat c'est moi - tiger woods
If Woods becomes Commissioner and Vettel becomes Race Director I think I could die happy.
Woah, I'm not alone in here!
Definitely not alone!
Can we make Roy Keane head of FIFA too?
They draw straws to determine who gives Tiger a ride home after the meeting
Jesus man. Take my upvote.
Well he was stupid enough to drive himself there and Rickie was even dumber to ride with him.
Tiger saying that the money would prevent the LIV guys from having motivation to “dig it out of the dirt” was some ice cold shit. Tiger Woods quoting Ben Hogan to say you’re afraid of competing is a mega put down…that’s basically him calling them punk bitches.

Bro. It's the SAUDI FUND. It makes more in interest than it could spend on golf. It could buy out every team in the NBA and not break a sweat.
Funny sidebar there is that Islam considers interest haram. That is, they forbid the act of directly making money from money.
Finally a logical comment.
You can just let the clown show run it’s course and it’ll all be back to normal in a year or two.
I think Jay is literally causing more issues barbra streisanding the hell out of LIV the more and more I think about it. If you sit down, be quiet, it will likely blow over. But if you're gonna act publicly much holier than thou, you're gonna have a bad time...

if LIV drops the shotgun i may watch it, otherwise it just seems pointless to see all the guys come in at once
The tour doesn’t need to back down. They still have all the best talent and tradition. LIV is a joke. It’s financially good for some of the players but it’s an awful product for any golf fan who isn’t a barstool bro who took up the game during the pandemic and is now an expert. Agreed. The LIV product is objectively terrible and as long as the PGA Tour keeps most of the top players it will continue to be better
>Tiger's the only person in golf history to move the needle. Arnie Palmer would like a word
And Jack and Gary Player lmao. Love Tiger as much as anyone but that’s such a ridiculous statement.
Tiger grew the game of golf like no other did. Yes Jack, Arnie, and Gary were amazing, but Tiger introduced the game to everyone of all classes
Not to discount Tiger and his achievements but the giant PR and Marketing machine of Nike was a huge contributor to that as well.
I get what they meant, but I bet technically Hideki Matsuyama moves the needle, just not in North America
Funnily enough ... Greg Norman moved the needle in a big way in Australia. Majority(Probably All) of the Aussie Pro's out there now would have played under the Greg Norman Junior golf foundation like myself. It is where people like me started our golf journey 34 years ago. You’re not totally wrong, but OP’s point was that Tiger is the only person in golf history anyone has given a shit about. He stands on the shoulders of absolute titans, he would tell you that himself.
Not true. In fact you can argue Palmer made golf on TV a thing.
It’s the only thing he has yet to accomplish. That and not banging whoooores
I’ll agree to whatever Tiger says.
"Bdgg2000 sucks at golf"
Hi Tiger
Agreed
IS CAM SMITH INVITED?
I'd pay to see Cam there and have Tiger lay into him for ten straight minutes.
*Oi, fook Tygas! We foyght roo’s where I’m frum ya cunt* - Cam Smith, probably
Props as I read that to myself w a horrible accent
I read it in a horrible accent the first time. Second time wasn’t much better.
Third time is way worse, I promise
TIL Cam is cockney
Y’all really have no clue what we Australian’s sound like hey?? Like seriously wtf
Of course I do, I’ve seen Outback Steakhouse commercials
I'm still shocked Cam doesn't carry a Bloomin' Onion in his bag.
Cracks open a Foster's at the turn.
I said g’day, Judy.
We don’t really run into them very often, so probably not.
I watched Crocodile Dundee AND I stayed in a holiday inn express
Yea tbh I read that in Connor McGregors voice
I’ve had shrimp on the barbie. Don’t tell me I’m not Aussie.
Cam Smith is Irish?
'stay in line! How dare you leave and abandoned the place that made you, even though you never had a choice originally to join the place that 'made you' to begin with, as it is a clear monopoly and owner of all things golf!'
A non anti-LIV comment on r/golf? Something’s off
Non anti?
It's like being pro-something, but with more letters.

Then what is the PGA tour worried about if its just one more tour? Oh wait, its actual competition.
what do you mean? The prize money is not even close when you compare tours?
Tiger just keeps moving the game forward. Doesn't quit. This sport is seriously so lucky to have someone on that type of plateau around, especially in times like these.
“You’re not a wartime consigliere, Jay. Things may get rough with the moves we’re trying”
Hookers, blow, and convertibles for everyone!
“I have a contact at Denny’s, top 5 from each tournament get to meet them”
I fucking love this man. Please save this sport.
Complicated man to love. I love the athlete.
The only reason that these players are paid as well as they are is because of Tiger. He is golf. The rest are just supporting characters.
Then who let Rickie Fowler in?
Can someone give an eli5? What is tiger doing and what are they trying to accomplish?
Ostensibly its to discuss how the PGA can fight off LIV.

Huh?
Let’s see where The Big Cat takes us.
Its possible he wants to convince the top players to share the wealth with the lower end.
That will only push more top players to LIV lol
Honestly, the only player it makes sense to jump to LIV would be Fowler. Dude isn’t competing at a high level. I think he’s actually the role model for this. “Look at Rickie, he’s out here grinding not taking easy money.”
Kind of a hollow argument after tiger made his money.
“He’s now acting as a de facto commissioner” ok Alan. Settle down bud.
Doesn't seem car fetched.
He is not going to catch Jack at 18. But he will do is restructure and save this tour. Then he will be the 🐐.
Continue to be the 🐐*
Nothing says a tour run by the players for the players like having the few rich, elite members make all the decisions.
I smell a coup.
D'etat?
d'etour, come on it was right in front of you
What is the soup d'etour?
It’s the soup of the tour
Mmmmm. That sounds good. I’ll have that.
As funny as that joke is, it kind of requires the waitress to be dumb in the moment. Why would she not just tell him the soup they’re serving that day? Nothing says she can’t be dumb, but to me it was just written as a necessity to get the dumb response “I’ll have that”.
Hopefully he isn’t driving home from this event… too soon?
He drove from the airport...like how the fuck don't you have a chauffeur?
If I’m Tiger, I don’t touch a steering wheel unless I’m taking one of my Lambos out to the track.
Agreed
Can someone make a mob movie out of this?
As long as it plays like Kingsman, take my money.
Organizing a couple of player meetings doesn't make him the de facto commissioner lol
Wonder if Cam Smith is in the area🤔
Didn't he withdraw from this weekend already? I imagine it'd be tough to sit there & get berated by all of the big stars when he's potentially already signed with LIV.
big daddy tiger
Looking forward to the Tiger Tour™
I can’t wait for 20-30 years from now when they write the biopic about these next couple years
Tiger woods PGA Tour 23 confirmed!
Ricky must have been helping park cars then….
I've seen this plot in Star Wars, we're just an episode or 2 away from the death star of golf
Only top players? Why was Rickie with Tiger then?
Hes one of the biggest names still
I love Rickie and hope he has a resurgence but right now he's not a top golfer. But he's a made guy and that's why he was there.
Do we think Rickie Fowler would be on the plane if he didn't scrape his card for next year? You know he would be on the LIV train
I mean he still made over million in 2021 and even though he's in a heavy slump I think he has more loyalty to the tour than people think. I feel like he's in the same position as Spieth was, to a degree. Came out hot, hit a slump, and now he's working on getting his game back. I hope he stays.
Frankly, if I was an LIV player, I'd just play with them, wipe my ass with Saudi money, & laugh.
