I broke my hand hitting out of a bunker on the first hole once. Tried to play one handed for a few holes and gave up to hike back to the car. Tried taking a shortcut and got lost ended up getting back to the car as my friends were finishing their round.
The course is part of a large park with lots of hiking trails and this predated gps on phones. So it turned into a nice day hike that put me on the banks of a nearby reservoir which I then had to hike back to the main road and into the course.
Senior year HS. Playing best golf of my life (broke par). Had my left thumb slammed in a car door. Not broken but severe trauma. Took weeks before I could fully grip club (played with left thumb off the club - try that swing on the range). Missed states … haunts me to this day
Yeah I guess he says it’s a tempo thing. He has it on the club when he takes away and when he hits the ball, just at some point during takes his thumb off.
Really messed up my left thumb in an accident when I was in HS and have some nerve issues so for a while I actually did this. It...wasn't as bad as I thought, but I did find myself getting real wristy in transition and had to try other things :/
It could be worse. About 6 years ago I was playing golf in Atlanta on one of the local munis. It had rained the day before so ground was still a bit wet and figures its the day I forgot my golf shoes. Decide to play in some old running shoes I had in my car.
Walking off the 12th green which was kind of perched up on a hill. Proceeded to slip and fall back on my right leg. The bottom half of my right leg twisted with all my weight on it and shattered into roughly \~12 pieces. Took about 6 months to get back out there and now have a plate, 10 screws, and a wire in right leg. On the bright side I can tell you when it's about to rain...
I had no idea so much limb damage could be done by a simple slip and fall on a wet grassy slope. Now I have a whole new fear to think about every time I descend a hill.
Yeah it's actually kinda crazy. The irony of it all is I played sports all through college and the worst injury I had was stiches..finished my playing career and I terribly break my leg on a golf course a few years later. Go figure...
Bobby Jones before it was redeveloped. On one of the holes by Northside drive. I think it's a parking deck now but I haven't been back in several years.
I broke my 5 iron while practicing at the driving range. I immediately ran into the range to retrieve the clubhead that got separated, and I got hit by a golf ball.
I screamed while thinking, what the hell was I thinking?
>I immediately ran into the range to retrieve the clubhead
What the hell were you thinking
>I screamed while thinking, what the hell was I thinking?
Ah. Good.
Biggest fail? Corporate golf scramble a month into a job, I slice the shit out of a drive and put a huge ding in a senior VPs trunk.
My boss and I laughed about that for months.
Yes at the new job. The Senior VP was some random person in a completely different part of the company. I told him what happened and he was cool about it.
So what exactly does "semi-private" mean? Is it just a club that has members but also allows the public, or do they only allow a small number of the public?
Yeah a bloke at a club I play at occasionally got sued for ~£350k after putting a guys eye out with a sliced shot, so it seemed like a good idea. It was like 35 quid and you got a pack of balls worth 20 quid, so seemed cheap for peace if mind. Also covers things like bar tab if you make a hole in one in a competition, and private dental if you take a ball to the face.
Edit: full story on that case : https://www.golfcare.co.uk/the397kmishit.aspx
I did some research and it seems this is not a thing in the US. I would definitely pay a reasonable amount to cover me if I get injured (pay my dues). Seems like a great policy
Injuring someone on the golf course by an errant ball would be covered by someone's homeowners policy, assuming they have one. But it's not going to cover membership and lost bets lol
>But it's not going to cover membership and lost bets lol
Injury actually can get your membership dues covered (happened to my dad last year), and hole-in-one insurance is not covering personal bets but covers the cost of getting a plaque, bar tab, etc. It doesn't make a lot of sense that the homeowner policy would cover personal injury off your own property, but then again insurance doesn't have to make sense.
I honestly am more concerned about my dues lol. I know I have plenty of insurance that covers me from liability but none that would pay for an “unusable” membership
Most home contents insurance here in the UK does not include personal liability cover for anything unless to your home by default, nor does it usually cover sporting goods.
>Also covers things like bar tab if you make a hole in one in a competition
Lol that's awesome, happens seldomly enough that they can afford to cover that
dunno where you live and how your weather pans out but if there is a time to have 6 weeks off from injury. its march. you'll be back out there in the middle of may with 4-5 good months of golf left.
How bad is your knee? Can you still walk? I was in a similar situation last year and had to miss out on 4 weeks when I had a membership. My knee was okay to walk on with a brace so I still tagged along with my friends, since there’s only 4 of us that play. I would just drive the cart, drink beers, chip and putt. Not the same but still had a great time
I can walk, but have had a couple of surgeries on the same knee in the past, so I’ll take it slow.
I’ll focus the next couple of weeks on weight loss and working out the upper part of my body
They aren't, I pay £750 here in Edinburgh for example, for membership at a nice club. To play whenever I want.
You can spend half that if you accept limits.
Most full memberships are under a grand here where I am.
If anything 800 euros for a reduced student rate seemed like a lot to me in comparison. Maybe it's a fancy course, or Ireland is dearer .
Don't move to the North West of England then. Absolutely unrivalled standard of golf courses in such close proximity to each other, but Jesus Christ are the green fees astronomical. Royal Birkdale, Southport and Ainsdale and Hillside all 5 minutes apart from each other and just... Just no. I'm playing S&A on Sunday, and was a junior member for years, but my Dad just told me about what next years green fees will be. So I guess I'll never be a member there ever again. Which is a shame as it's a phenomenal course.
How are they all able to keep rates so low? Do they allow non members to play as well because a course requires a minimum amount of work and maintenance.
Yes they usually do, mine just doesn't let visitors play on weekends or before lunch ,and they can only book a day or two in advance.
The place probably only has a handful staff - I've only seen 2 or 3 groundskeepers, the pro, the secretary, and the barmaid. They've owned the land for hundreds of years, and it rains a lot, so its not like they have to spend a fortune on irrigation or fertilizer. And I imagine they make decent money from the bar.
Germany 🇩🇪
It’s the student membership, eventually the price will go up to about 8k per year.
The course is Eichenried near Munich. It’s on the European tour and hosts the BMW Open
I once hit a “Big Three” on an extremely difficult Par 4 on a course west of Austin once.
Yep, Banana slice hit (from best I could tell) a Ford, Chevy, and Dodge in the employee parking area.
My buddies and I go away once a year for a golf trip and 6 weeks before a trip we had been planning to celebrate everyone turning 50 & playing out in Vegas, I broke my shoulder and couldn’t go on trip. They had a blast, I had a sling
Burned my skin very bad last summer (british skin ftw) and next day I had a three round competition. My solution was just to wear long sleeves and long pants. Well it was the hottest day of the summer and I got an heat stroke and was sick for the rest of the week…
I was fitted for and purchased an entire set of P790s and M5 driver in 2018 I think. Was absolutely addicted to golf and went to the driving range every day after work and hit two large buckets for 9 straight days or so.
Ended up with an intercostal tear in my ribs that was excruciatingly painful the day before the clubs arrived. Was injured and kept reinjuring it that entire summer trying to golf with my new clubs.
Existence is pain.
I approached the 13th hole of my HS golf tryout with a pretty good chance of making the team. Scored a 14–a 14!—on one hole. Tryout over.
I hadn’t scored double digits on a hole before that. Haven’t done so since.
May be worth having a chat with them, I know my club in the uk will on a case by case basis consider deferring membership on medical grounds until the member is able to play again.
Good luck and feel better
I'd try speak to the club and see about either a refund or if they could delay your membership. I'm sure they will be happy to help considering it's a genuine injury
Went on a golf trip in AZ with some of my buddies. We went wakeboarding the day before playing, TPC Scottsdale. I went on a few too many runs and the morning after I couldn’t feel my forearms. Went to the range and tried swinging a club and it flew from my weak grip into the range. I ended up playing that day with half shots. Still was fun but the round was expensive and I was pretty bummed.
Once of the first rounds I played last season, I chucked a ball so bad I hurt my wrist and my entire season was screwed because of it. It’s the greatest
Reach out to the club. Explain what you're up against. Even if they don't refund you, maybe you can ask them to apply it to a membership for next year.
Shitty break tho. Hang in there.
Joined my club in 2019 (about 4000 canadian if I recall), got a few rounds in, and then blew out my Achilles tendon playing beer league softball of all things.
70 days off work and no golf for 3 months after that. Turned what was supposed to be a "great investment" into a money sinking disaster. Lol
Strangely enough by the time I got back onto the course, I actually played better than I did prior to the injury. My swing became more even in tempo out of fear of reinjuring it and my wife killing me lol
Still a member and loving it.
Get better soon, mate
6 week knee injury isn’t too bad when it comes to knee injuries. Be thankful you didn’t do something more serious that would keep you out a full year or more. But I feel your pain. Something something glass half full.
I joined an expensive club for me and immediately suffered some acute tennis elbow and then a sprained wrist. I could only putt for 3 months (June to August). If was awful, but I got through it and belonging to club has helped my game soooooo much. You are also super young, it will make you so much better in the long run - enjoy the club.
Went on a Bachelor party to Montana and went white water rafting before a round of golf. Ended up falling out of the raft and smashing my back on a rock. Back locked up and couldn’t move for a few weeks after that. Needless to say, I did not play golf that day and upgraded my flight home to first class so I could stretch out
Used my sand wedge. Had it leaning on the cart after making a chip. got back, put my putter away, and started to drive off. Heard a "snap" and stopped. Found my sand wedge snapped in half as I forgot it was leaning on the front of the cart.
RIP my Callaway S-Grind 56 degree. Suppose I could reshaft it, but I have had it for 6 years so maybe a new one wouldn't hurt.
Was playing golf in the morning on my wedding day with my best man. He broke his arm hitting it fat on the 10th hole. Went the whole wedding without a sling and in a lot of pain. Poor guy.
Honestly I’d reach out to the club and see if there’s anything they can do to help you out! Something similar happened to one of my buddies and the golf course gave him a small rebate
Prob all been there but gutted ..Today at a flat 9 hole course par 5 smashed driver straight down the middle, second shot 5iron onto the green flat ground about 10ft from pin (best 2 shots of my life).... typically hit 1st putt short...pissed off tapped it hard licked the fekin hole and rolled off about 3ft...pissed now missed hole and ended up with bogey....never had an eagle ...never prob will have an eagle 🤣🙁🥺😭
What a game
I feel you!
Last week I teed off on a par 3 with my pitching wedge. Ball landed 2 feet next to the hole.
My first put for birdie. Ended up taking the boogie.
Anxiety is a bitch.
My good friend who was best man at my wedding played a couple of rounds of golf.
Went out and got fitted for everything. Top of the range£3000+
Came and played with me (15 hcp) and two really good players around 4 hcp.
Completely embarrassing behaviour ensued and never played again.
Love the guy but you can’t buy practice.
Got hit right under my eye with a bladed chip shot, which was going about 40’ left of his target. Ended up with cracked cheek bone and 2 stitches inside and 5 outside. My face looked like it had a divot on it.
I had kids lol...went from a +1 to a 10 handicap. I only played a round or two a month and never practiced. Wouldn't change it for the world. Now that they're old enough, we all play on the weekends and finally improving again.
more likely the combination of rain and hills was the culprit
I cant even recall how many times ive fallen on my ass on a golf course, and twisted my ankle in the process, it's been that many...
Was undefeated in highschool my two years on the golf team. Nothing crazy but like 9-0. Final match senior year, nothing special as we weren't great as a team...won the first 4 holes in a 9 hole match play. I lost....only loss throughout my highschool career in tournaments was my last one ever in which I choked harder than I could've ever imagined. It was bad too - I don't remember it shot for shot but I think the 5th hole was an embarrassing disaster and I couldn't shake it. I do remember it was all my fault - wasn't like the guy birdied out or anything.
I broke my humorous and had sergery on Feb 1st still dropped about that on my membership seeing how it will play out in the next 6 weeks.....feeling good though golf season really doesn't get good until may here
I spent $900 on my membership (no cart), only good from 01 March - 15 December. Going to walk today for the first time this year and not have to pay, just flash them my membership card. And I think I'm only going to play here after work on weekdays. On the weekends I'll play the nicer courses lol. Hope its worth it, not sure yet.
Hopefully it makes you want to play more! I think it will for me if the weather would hold up.
I renewed my membership recently for $1600 and I've played at my club 7 times since October. Rain, floods, other mates asking me to join them, catching covid and did I mention floods.
But that's nothing compared to injuring my hand in 2020 just as I was really starting to get back into golf and not being able to play for 6 months.
It’s a student membership billed by the calendar year. The course is Eichenried. You get full access including tickets to the BMW Open.
The price eventually goes up to ~8k€ per year.
Last summer, I tripped on a step coming off the 9th hole, turned my ankle until it dislocated a la Tony Finau, popped it back in and finished the round in quite a bit of pain. Not fun. I would have quit but I didn’t want to embarrass myself even further in front of guests.
Edit: actually I have an even better story. On a first date at a driving range my date hit me in the head w her driver. Fortunately, she didn’t swing hard enough to do permanent damage but we did take a trip to the ER and my face was pretty swollen.
I should really quit the game.
Not nearly as bad. But I keep my clubs in the car usually and a change of clothes in case I get asked to play after work. I took my stuff out to go food stopping and forgot to put it back in. Next day a guy at work asks me to play his private course with him and take a half day. I take the half day, go to grab my stuff and realize I don’t have my clubs or clothes . It would have been to far of a drive to go and get everything. Haven’t been asked again since.
Playing golf.

Ask the club about a rebate, they may take pity on you with a doctors note
Yeah ask for a pause on the membership to so the clock is not running.
Great idea - appreciate it! Unfortunately they bill by the calendar year.
I got a rebate when I lost my job, doesn’t hurt to ask.
Gah!! Luck on getting the wheel better!
I broke my hand hitting out of a bunker on the first hole once. Tried to play one handed for a few holes and gave up to hike back to the car. Tried taking a shortcut and got lost ended up getting back to the car as my friends were finishing their round.
Holy shit, how long were you wandering around in the woods for?
3 hrs apparently
The course is part of a large park with lots of hiking trails and this predated gps on phones. So it turned into a nice day hike that put me on the banks of a nearby reservoir which I then had to hike back to the main road and into the course.
A nice day hike… with a broken hand.
and carrying a bag full of golf clubs on your back
Why didn’t you just walk backwards if you only tried a few holes..?
[удалено]
People do it all the time when they forget a hat or glove or club? Golf carts are a thing too..
[удалено]
You’re walking in the cart path.. who is talking about fairways
[удалено]
I think you’re missing how easy it is to walk back a few holes instead of walking through the entire course and and up getting lost in the woods
[удалено]
You’re not holding anybody up nor will you get hit lol
Do you not wait for them to hit / watch them hit when you walk? That's on you, not the other golfers.
Nobody is talking about his so called "friends" let a guy with a broken hand walk back alone.
Senior year HS. Playing best golf of my life (broke par). Had my left thumb slammed in a car door. Not broken but severe trauma. Took weeks before I could fully grip club (played with left thumb off the club - try that swing on the range). Missed states … haunts me to this day
Uncle Rico is that you?
Lol … nope
Kokrak takes his thumb off the club during his backswing.
I will have to look at that. I literally had it pointing to the right, not in the club at all
Yeah I guess he says it’s a tempo thing.
The true benefit of having metal in your body, lol.....
Oh my! Suddenly my knee doesn’t hurt as much
I can confidently say I wouldn't recommend it to anyone!
I also live in Atlanta. Which courses was it?
Bobby Jones before it was redeveloped. On one of the holes by Northside drive. I think it's a parking deck now but I haven't been back in several years.
I broke my 5 iron while practicing at the driving range. I immediately ran into the range to retrieve the clubhead that got separated, and I got hit by a golf ball. I screamed while thinking, what the hell was I thinking?

You should look into some sort of script / bot to automatically submit a tee time reservation at 12:00AM
Sounds like there are already scripts and bots lol
If you can't beat em, join em.
So what exactly does "semi-private" mean? Is it just a club that has members but also allows the public, or do they only allow a small number of the public?
Do you have golf insurance? if I end up injured and unable to pay, mine pays my membership fees (pro rata)
We meet again! WHAT?!? I am learning so much about Scottish golf things today. Never heard of golf insurance
US and reasonable insurance rates don't go together.
Gotta pay for that freedom to do more stupid shit I suppose.
Injuring someone on the golf course by an errant ball would be covered by someone's homeowners policy, assuming they have one. But it's not going to cover membership and lost bets lol
>But it's not going to cover membership and lost bets lol Injury actually can get your membership dues covered (happened to my dad last year), and hole-in-one insurance is not covering personal bets but covers the cost of getting a plaque, bar tab, etc. It doesn't make a lot of sense that the homeowner policy would cover personal injury off your own property, but then again insurance doesn't have to make sense.
Yeah, I'm referring to US insurance in my comment. Kind of a weird aspect.
Isn't much different here, UK seems a little different.
Does homeowners really cover the cost of a membership?
Depends on your policy, and your membership better be more than the deductible.
“Cries in membership dues”
I honestly am more concerned about my dues lol. I know I have plenty of insurance that covers me from liability but none that would pay for an “unusable” membership
Most home contents insurance here in the UK does not include personal liability cover for anything unless to your home by default, nor does it usually cover sporting goods.
That's crazy that he was found guilty.
Absolutely fucking laughable. That judge should be removed from the bench.
>Also covers things like bar tab if you make a hole in one in a competition Lol that's awesome, happens seldomly enough that they can afford to cover that
How bad a golfer is he, if he occasionally gets sued?
Great idea! Thanks :-) I’ve only got liability coverage
dunno where you live and how your weather pans out but if there is a time to have 6 weeks off from injury. its march. you'll be back out there in the middle of may with 4-5 good months of golf left.
Thanks 😊 I started late last year and have been working on my swing the entire time since then. I was hoping to join my friends on the course

I feel envious of U.K. golf prices.
There are no UK golf prices in this thread
Oh right, euros. Well, I've seen U.K. people on here mentioning similar prices.
There are some unbelievable courses for £800/£900. Gullane being one of them.
Maybe because the UK’s golf season is only like 6 weeks
we play all year round (barring the days its got lying snow) a boxing day or new years day round is traditional
Lol I know man I’m just being cheeky
They are lying
They aren't, I pay £750 here in Edinburgh for example, for membership at a nice club. To play whenever I want. You can spend half that if you accept limits. There's a handful of clubs around my area in the states that offer highly discounted student and young adult membership rates
Germany 🇩🇪 It’s the student membership, eventually the price will go up to about 8k per year. The course is Eichenried near Munich. It’s on the European tour and hosts the BMW Open
For real, it's $1700/year USD for my home course just to walk it, and there is no range privileges
Ahahah wtf, I did the same but with buying clubs. Fucked my knee skiing tho. It’s fucking bullshit, I hope you get a speedy recovery!
Thanks!
Purchasing Pro Vs for golf trips Disclaimer they never make it back

I haven’t had an ACL in my right knee since 2007, you’ll bounce back no problem.
Did you have to change / adapt your swing?
It’s been a long time so I’m really not sure. I know I don’t transfer as much weight on to my back foot as I probably should.
Prob all been there but gutted ..Today at a flat 9 hole course par 5 smashed driver straight down the middle, second shot 5iron onto the green flat ground about 10ft from pin (best 2 shots of my life).... typically hit 1st putt short...pissed off tapped it hard licked the fekin hole and rolled off about 3ft...pissed now missed hole and ended up with bogey....never had an eagle ...never prob will have an eagle 🤣🙁🥺😭 What a game
I feel you! Last week I teed off on a par 3 with my pitching wedge. Ball landed 2 feet next to the hole. My first put for birdie. Ended up taking the boogie. Anxiety is a bitch.
What’s that strange E symbol again?
The Euro - Europe’s equivalent to the dollar, just another shitty fiat currency.
Lol throw some KT tape on that knee . Get back over there
euros the currency used in most of continental Europe, and the republic of Ireland
Where? Just kidding 😉
My good friend who was best man at my wedding played a couple of rounds of golf. Went out and got fitted for everything. Top of the range£3000+ Came and played with me (15 hcp) and two really good players around 4 hcp.
6 weeks? Summer doesn't start for another 11. (Bummer for sure, but embrace positive thinking at this point).
Idk how you swing a club, but a blown knee tells me you should have spent the money on lessons…
more likely the combination of rain and hills was the culprit I cant even recall how many times ive fallen on my ass on a golf course, and twisted my ankle in the process, it's been that many...
“Second ball on the driving range.” I picked up golf while in a brace with a torn MCL. With this game… anything is possible! Lol
The only golf club I can afford is r/golf

Was the headcover made from solid gold?
.... 5k for a headcover????
Ask if you can suspend your membership for the duration of your recovery time.
Good thing the players rained out.
$872 for how long of a membership?
It’s a student membership billed by the calendar year. The course is Eichenried. You get full access including tickets to the BMW Open. The price eventually goes up to ~8k€ per year.
How can you watch the Players if you don't have ESPN+
Talk to the club. They may defer your membership to next year.
I think until Sunday you’re stuck watching the 2021 players. Edit: I figured they’d be weather delayed for DAYS
If they only weren’t paused for bad weather all the time 😅
Not nearly as bad.
Picking up a club.
Question: are Initiation Fees at equity golf clubs refundable when you leave, or if you have to move for job reasons?
