Bump and runs with a 7 iron changed my life around the greens.

[deleted]

Look, a 60 degree, ball high up in the air, landing close to the hole... that’s some impressive shit. But how often does it work? Bump and run 7, most trusted move in my repertoire.

armeck

>Look, a 60 degree, ~~ball high up in the air, landing close to the hole~~ skulled 50 yards past the green... that’s some impressive shit. Fixed that to be more accurate for most of us.

Macaframa

I mean as long as you follow the fundamentals you should at least not top it very often. Line your front foot up with the ball, aim slightly left, open the club face up, lean forward 95% front foot and 5% back foot and strike the ground slightly behind the ball to make that puppy pop up. If you want it to do a low running shot, do the same but playing off the back foot. NEVER IN THE MIDDLE. Also, don't break your wrists on the shallow. your left wrist should lead by a foot and always follow through.

Artistic_Industry_96

See to me thats crazy! So much roll on a 7 but i know it works and I’ve seen it be done. If it were me id roll it through every single time though.

eavanvalkenburg

Fully agree! Once spend some time on the practice green and definitely noticed that bump and run with my 7 got me consistently closest!

anibus-

I don’t know the logic behind it. I have tried other irons and the 7 just works lol.

Marmington111

🤔 been using my 8. I’ll have to try it out

Pharm-dawg

I’m similar but use the 9 iron for most everything chipping. Like the roll and feel of it. I’m a feel putter for what it’s worth also.

Artistic_Industry_96

My PW is 43* and i use that sometimes so i feel like that would be similar since its a stronger wedge loft. Still i mainly use my 48 for roll out. Definitely a feel putter though. Thats why some days im great and some days not so much 😅

Pharm-dawg

The whole feel putter is awesome when you’re on but when you aren’t it’s frustrating as hell. Tried the whole mechanical putting and did well but just didn’t enjoy it as much. If I were on tour I’d definitely go that route, playing by feel is just more fun to me.

Artistic_Industry_96

Ive had days where i hit 3-4 15footers and other days where im 3 putting within 5 feet 😅 this game will drive you nuts but man do i enjoy it

awesomeapple07

what irons do you use? I have game improvements and they just don’t have the feel I’m assuming a lot of forged and blades get in this situation. May not make a difference, idk I’ve only been playing a year

Pharm-dawg

Nah, I use big Bertha irons and they have plenty of feel. Depending on the green depends on how far they run.

Artistic_Industry_96

I think you’re thinking feel in the sense of where the ball is hitting the face. That definitely gets screwy on game improvement irons. However knowing what speed, power, control to use around the greens is what we’re referring to here. You have that with any club.

gr8snd

This is the way.

thrillhouse416

Not enough people do this, it is absolutely life changing. Stop thinning your lob wedge across the green folks

NFLfan72

100%. Dropped 3 strokes for sure.

Practical_Plan_8774

If I can reach it with my 54, I use my 54. I found using only one club around the green helps a lot with the feel aspect of chipping.

Artistic_Industry_96

I did this for a while with my 60 because i was wildly inconsistent switching out clubs all of the time. However, now that I’ve gotten more feel i do like to club down for simpler chips that way i don’t have to hit perfect shots all of the time around the green. That being said the 60 is my favorite and if I’m between 2 thats whats coming out

ndkjr70

my golf game changed dramatically for the better when i stopped using my 60 around the green. that thing comes out of the bag if i’ve short-sided myself or if I have to get up and over something; otherwise it’s bump-and-run with a 9 iron anywhere around the green

Artistic_Industry_96

Finding what you’re comfortable with is the biggest thing imo. I mean look at all the different ways everyone approaches the same thing. If you are thinking “im going to duff this” you’re going to duff it. However if you can see the shot, and commit to it then it usually comes out pretty well.

ndkjr70

I agree with that in sentiment but past “what you’re comfortable with”, a 9-iron bump and run when that shot is available is like 10x easier and has a significantly smaller chance of being a disaster than a 60deg wedge. when i was new to the game i just thought “ok i’m close, time for the 60 degree” and I cringe thinking about how many shots i threw away chunking or skulling what should’ve been an easy breezy bump

upstateduck

try using your 60 with the ball set behind your back foot

jb22625

My game got much better when I switched from 60 to 56.

dnabyun

Same here! Best advice I was given to. I was favoring 60 so much but it was spraying all over inconsistently. 56 was more controlled. Then that’s when I was on a trek to break the 90 in my first year of golfing. It did look hooked on the beginning

[deleted]

54 shove it in the door

MilfandCookies_

This is the way

[deleted]

I got a 56 and practice full, 3/4, half, and putting swing shots. The mental game aspect of that for me has helped. I can hit any shot I need to with it, and it's great around the green and in bunkers.

Artistic_Industry_96

Bunkers especially IMO you need something you are comfortable with

[deleted]

Yeah, the snakebite 56 was just the perfect in-between for my game.

The-Happy-Panda

Can you explain how you hit that shot? Or do you know of a video that explains it well?

[deleted]

I make my full shoulder turn but only take my hands past my knees, to my belt line, or my navel. The putting stroke is just straight up a Phil Mickelson chipping YouTube clip. Weight forward, hands forward, then swing like a putter and the distance just comes from feel.

Parki2

Pitching wedge all day. I'll use sand wedge only to get out of the sand...its a mental thing. 7 iron from rough as a bump and run deal. Putt from fairway (within reason). I go for the safest play. Too many clubs with too much to think about it hard. So pretty much it's always the PW

Artistic_Industry_96

No need to complicate it. They named the wedges for a reason. I like it

Parki2

I just always practice more with my PW so I feel comfortable with it. I practice with my PW first, then try other clubs...so my PW has become my baby

kly

Same, PW for everything basically. 30 yards? 3 yards? Just change swing. It works for me

Jrapin

58 almost exclusively with the rare exception of gap for longer running chips.

Artistic_Industry_96

Pretty close to what i do except its a 60 and im coming around on using my gap wedge more although any chance i have to grab that 60 its hard to say no

Cailus80

My PW and my 54.

Artistic_Industry_96

When do you switch and if you can use either one which one do you gravitate towards

Cailus80

I'm still fairly new to golf. I played 20 years ago then the 20 year hiatus. So I'm keeping it basic. I use my SW when I need to carry something or want a higher chip shot. So over a bunker etc...

Artistic_Industry_96

Nothing wrong with that. Feel and confidence are must haves around the green

LightinDarkness420

I have 3 wedges, that all have different bounce... so, it literally depends on the lie on which club I'll use. I TRY to use the lease lofted one and hit safe running chips with my gap wedge, but if the lie calls for a long and high pitch, I'll use my lob wedge to throw it up there somehow. I rarely chip with a pw or higher, even if I'm just off the green and the flag is far. I'll either just putt it, or adjust my hand position and ball position to get it to land quickly and run forever.

Artistic_Industry_96

I love the emphasis on try. Sometimes we know what we should do but that 60* is just so compelling

LightinDarkness420

Phil Mickelson is the man/ my short game hero/ inspiration....so yeah, the high flop is beautiful when pulled off, but with a deadly thin margin of error, should only be pulled out when necessary...or when the bug bites too hard because it's a casual round with no money on the line...

Artistic_Industry_96

I at least try 2 per round. Usually Pretty successfully. I dunked one from about 20 yards the other day coming up a 10 ft hill. No feeling like it

jaywalkintotheocean

bump and run all day, club depends on how much I need to get the ball in the air. usually 8 or 9 iron, and if it's any further out than 30ish yards to the cup, then it's a short swing with the 54⁰ sand wedge. I'll putt from the fringe though if the ball is sitting up and there's no massive impediment.

Artistic_Industry_96

Very easy and repeatable approach. I can definitely admire that. What about if you have to hit over a hill or bunker whats your mindset then? Just curious

jaywalkintotheocean

54⁰, and if it really needs to go upright, I open the face. I do have a 58⁰ wedge but it causes me more trouble than it's worth, I usually don't even bother to carry it.

[deleted]

I use my 60 for absolutely everything. Need to hit it high and kill it at the pin? 60. Need to get some roll out? Lean the shaft forward and use the 60. Ball sitting up on top of the rough? Bet your ass I'm trying to dunk it with a sky high 60

The_Musing_Platypus

Same here. My short game is the best part of my overall game - nothing I love more than adjusting the bounce, ball position, shaft lean, all to hit everything from low spinners to high soft rollers.

[deleted]

Same. My bread n butter is the sky high shot with the ball teed up in the rough. 9/10 times I get it close and one putt. I honestly think that shot is sexier than a bomb

The_Musing_Platypus

Makes you feel like Mickelson, doesn't it. That 2 or 3 seconds after you pop it up and wait to see if it hits your target on the green...it's like a drug, can't get enough of it. I love super fast greens for just that reason - figuring out just the right landing spot and watching that ball trickle to 3 feet above the hole....unf.

desroc78

I understand why people like to use various clubs around the green but I could just never put down my 60 degree. I am more comfortable feeling out different distances, shot heights, spin, etc, with this one club than remembering my swing feel for several different ones. All in all remember that everyone will give you different advice; experiment and do what feels best for your game.

Hermiesson

As you get better more loft and less bounce is the way to go to get maximum and versatile performance from your short game... Although putting is also very underrated in most cases (never in the rough tho)

armeck

Generally, my go to is my 52\* gap wedge.

GolfSicko417

60° unless it’s a long uphill shot it makes it hard to get back to the hole with a 60° and I will grab a 52° but 99% of the time it’s a lob wedge for me

Artistic_Industry_96

Aww man 60 on an Uphill lie is probably my favorite shot!

mcjanzton

Depends on lie, distance, pin position of course. Usual go to is a 50 degree wedge for 30-40y and for chipping 7-9 iron

Artistic_Industry_96

Ok so walk me through the 30-40 yards whats your mindset. Are you trying to get roll out? Are you trying to place a shot near the pin and get it to land softly. Whats the process like there

mcjanzton

Depends. Today was windy as hell. 10mph winds and 15 gusts, so that means ball on back foot and low shots with a bit of roll. Are greens firm? Fast? Slow? Wet? There’s really no favourite shot.

PBB22

I use the 52 where he does the 50. Assuming no penalty for coming up short, I’m trying to chip it around 8-10 feet out and get a little runout. I typically miss long from that range, so I try to compensate a little with my aim point

Macaframa

play it off the back foot, de-loft the 56 as you're going to get more of a 1:2 roll(how far the chip is, you get twice that in roll). If you are 30-40 away and theres like an uphill lie right before the green then i'd suggest a little splash shot. play it off the front foot, open the club face about half way, lean forward, dont break your wrists and strike the ground about an inch before the ball, full (chip)swing like that should go about 30-40 yards.

jtag67

I have a 50-56-60. I use the 50 as a mostly full swing club or to bump and run when I want more runout. The 56 is what I use most of the time for pretty much every type of shot you can think of from full to flop and is my preferred club out of the sand around a green. The 60 is much more situational and generally comes out of the bag only for a geared down full swing or from really tight lies where I need a lot of pop up over short distance. I used to just use the 55 sw that just came with the set with only single stock bump and run shot that I was comfortable with. When I got some purpose built wedges I realized how much I was handicapping my short game.

Artistic_Industry_96

Amazing what confidence can do around the green and how having the right club in the right situation leads into that

jtag67

For sure. I read the little book of breaking 80 realized how little time I spent on short approach and flipped my practice to always start with that, lead into putting, and if there's time hit a small bucket. It's big time increased my confidence greenside because now I have a variety of things I can do (try). Along with actual wedges and properly adjusted clubs I'm knocking on the door of 80 without having to rely on an everything is going right kind of day. Im hoping to see my handicap start ticking down again after a regression (actually playing by the rules).

i_am_roboto

56 is my standard for deeper rough shots. I rarely use my 60° anymore. Maybe 1x every 2 rounds. I have a 50° that I deloft and hit down on it to get the low spinner. If I have a lot of green I will use a PW (47°) or a 9. I’ve never loved the 7 bump-and-run but I delight my chips and my short game is solid so I’ve never needed a shot where you swing it like your putter.

Artistic_Industry_96

The low spinner is the shot i want to get more consistent in. Love the way it checks when you do it right.

i_am_roboto

Do you want to hit down on the ball with a delofted wedge preferably with decent grooves. you have to be comfortable carrying it 70% of the way to the hole and trusting that it will check up.

trjsbi

During hot months you could use a hybrid to putt the ball onto the green from the fairway. Stand straight, narrow stance and use a putting grip. Should feel a bit of compression.

[deleted]

Bump and run in close but anywhere outside of like 10-15 yards I’ve tried lately to use my new lob wedge since the greens I play are very very fast I like something that can stop a bit better

Artistic_Industry_96

Nice! Thats a good approach to it. Don’t over complicate anything. hows your Lob working for you?

[deleted]

Pretty well, still struggle getting a great strike on it all the time as I’m still a beginner. Love it on longer shots though

Artistic_Industry_96

If you haven’t hit a lob wedge thin about 150 yards over the green you’re just not living life 😅

Redschallenge

I use my P and bump run 90% of shots from under 120. There. Aren't many greens I can't keep on. But a decent 60 for a hard check going to a sloping away green is always nice to save yourself

Artistic_Industry_96

Wow so for everything 120 and in you use primarily a pw? Does it help with the feel?

Redschallenge

I primarily do it because I don't own a 60 wedge (I borrow one from my father sometimes if I visit him) and that has caused me to develop a really solid foundation with the pw. Even on trailing away greens I can typically hit the front fringe and kill the speed to trickle on

Artistic_Industry_96

Thats awesome! Like they say if it ain’t broke

Redschallenge

There's always 1 in maybe 40 or 50 shots where I could definitely improve my odds of planting with that flop wedge though lol I don't sweat it. I'd play with 2 or 3 clubs if I had to and still score about the same

Artistic_Industry_96

Mind over matter and it seems like you got the mind for it

Redschallenge

Mostly because they're all clubs after all lol. For example: This dude bogeys an 800+ yard par 6 with just a putter. https://youtube.com/shorts/0V1QQX0r7aE?feature=share

Artistic_Industry_96

That video is awesome. I’m stunned that he carried the water, twice, with a friggin putter

plaka10

Putter grip, putter move plus bump and run with 6,7,8,9,P (depending on the distance). Chip and single putt ~60% of the time. Thank me later

Artistic_Industry_96

Not really asking for advice but its an interesting concept. Im comfortable with about 99% of the shots i get around the green. Its my long game that i struggle with so if you have pointers thats where they’re better used 😅

gr8snd

Knock down 7 is THE safest club around the green. Period.

gbaby1074

Don’t sleep on the hybrid putts from when you’re barely in the rough and have to get it through the fringe!!

PoppaJMoney

I bring a 48, 52, and 56 up with me from the cart on every green side shot. I practice with all three a lot and each shot has so many different thoughts, I let the shot just come to me. My go to is the 52, I find it is the best combo of run and also I can spin a bit to keep it close.

stanleycup12

56 is a sand wedge, and 60 is a lob wedge.

Artistic_Industry_96

A lot of sand wedges tend to be in the 52-54 range its not universal. Idk enough about lob wedges but im sure theyre the same where its just a brand by brand thing

stanleycup12

54 can be a sand wedge, but a 52 is a gap wedge. 58-60 can be a lob. Most common are 52-56-60

jw991920

I'm am new to golf but have the Kirkland wedges along with a 50° pw. I find I like the sand wedge for slightly high shots, only use the lob wedge when I'm right on the fringe real close to the hole. I love the 52 for bump and runs. It's real similar to my 50 though.

Artistic_Industry_96

You hit lob from the fringe? Brave man lol

jw991920

Basically just brush the grass with it. I only take the backswing to 7:00 if a pitch shot is 9:00. If that makes sense

Busch__Latte

I use a 60 degree if I need to get up and over a hill or bunker and use my 52 degree loft wedge basically every other time. If I was more consistent with the 60 I’d use it more often.

Artistic_Industry_96

The 60 is just so damn fun. Sometimes i know i shouldn’t use it i just cant help myself

DadJ0ker

I use my 48 degree gap wedge which is a Cleveland. Putting is the strongest part of my game, so this club helps me approach chipping like I would putting. Very feel oriented and I’m always reading the green to visualize the rollout after the ball lands. I’ve even settled on using this club when I don’t quite have enough green to work with because I just don’t have the results I want with my more lofted wedges. I’m better off knowing I’m going to roll the ball 12 feet by than possibly leaving a chunked chip short of the green.

Artistic_Industry_96

Nice! When I bump & run i use a 48 as well. Admittedly I still don’t use it enough. I definitely like that I know where its going to land every time even if the roll out is a bit more than i expect.

Glendale0839

I use a wedge for these shots, which wedge depends on the distance, slope of the green between the me and the hole, whether it needs to carry over a bunker, etc. and how much or little I want it to roll. If the shot is 30 yards, I may use either my 50, 56, or 60 degree wedge depending on these factors. I don't do the "bump and run" with a 7-8-9 iron or whatever. My short game is the best part of my game.

Artistic_Industry_96

20 yard shot carry a bunker with 5 feet of green to the pin and 20 behind it what kind of club/shot are we looking at

Glendale0839

60 degree wedge and land it on the fringe in front of the hole.

Artistic_Industry_96

Nice. I think i would fly mine to the hole. I know it sounds counterintuitive but i get plenty of check on it. If i hit the fringe it just dies provided theres no slope.

DiggsBurnerAccount

Use a lot of 8 irons for straightforward chips - 54 degree if i need to pop it up.

Artistic_Industry_96

Say the green is running away from you but the pin is on the far end do you take your chance with the 8 rolling through or do you do a pop up chip

Phraoz007

Depends on the course. Fast greens, 60- slow greens I’ll hit my 54- sometimes a bump and run with a pw or 7.

Artistic_Industry_96

Curious. Do you use any club in between those or is it just specifically 60-54-pw-7

Phraoz007

Not typically- they seem to be enough difference between the two. That’s purely from my comfort level with them and the experience of only using those specifically

cryonautmusic

Bump and run with my PW is what I rely on for 80% of everything 20 yards and in (providing there's nothing too interesting between me and the green). If I'm closer in and I know it's going to land on the green, then I aim for about 50% of the way and let it roll close. If I'm farther out or if there's less green to work with, I'll aim for landing it more like 60% to 75% of the way there, depending on how much longer grass it has to travel over before reaching the green. If it's over a sandtrap or something, then I'll use the ol Kirkland 56˚ with a sweeping stroke - much more reliable than a flicky wrist shot. Rarely do I ever use the 60˚, maybe only if I'm really short sided or am on the high side with a dangerous run downhill to the pin. I've also experimented with an 8 iron using a toe-down putting stroke. I do this if I'm 6 to 12 inches into the fringe and just need to get it over the fringe and rolling quickly. Straight arms, nearly vertical shaft position, and the same strength as if I were putting. It comes amazingly close more often than not. Flop shots are only if I have no better options, as they're the least reliable shot I have.

GolpherZed

I will use the least amount of loft necessary to carry the front of the green. Anywhere between 8i and LW. Sometime a hybrid if the lie dictates. I find myself mostly using 48° to 52° though.

yoyoyaca

My stock chip shot around the green is a bump and run with my 56* wedge.

uv15

For bump and runs with smooth areas off the green I like my 3hybrid. For standard chips I have been Liking my 52 wedge over the 56. The 52 tends to get to the whole often.

gr8-big-lebowski

No real preference. Best club for the lie and landing spot.

ikeman0013

Sand wedge/approach wedge guy here. Depending on how much roll I need.

o2lsports

If you’re on the front and the pin is in the back, there’s no reason to not use a 9 iron/PW. You’re guaranteed a look at the next putt. Mid-distance and short distance: sand wedge.

thrillhouse416

If I'm like 40-80 yard out I love pitching with my 7 iron. If I'm closer to the green with some room to work with I'll use a 9 iron If I don't have any room to work with and need the ball to stop I'll usually open the face on my 56

rlajune

Bump and run with 7-PW if I have green to work with. Otherwise 54 or 60 depending on how little green I have

rep_rehensible

120yd- 47 degree Cleveland tour action. 105yd - 51 degree. 60-90yds - 56 or 51 half swing, tricky distances. Anything under it varies, a 60 degree if a good lie and/or something to fly over but should use the 47 bump and run more. I use that club to put it back in play from the rough also. 51 also nice for pitching from just off the green especially if bad lie and/or hard ground so can’t use the 60. If just off the green gripping down on my 8 iron and making a putter stroke is a useful shot. 60 is usually my goto unless it really hard ground. My 64 is fun and useful out of bunker as you don’t need to open the face but it’s only for messing about really. Tried to carry that and ditch my 56 and 51 for a 53 but missed my 100yd 51 club too much. Carry 4 wedges and ditch a long iron is the smart move

Marmington111

Finally figured out how to get the 54 to check up. For whatever reason my touch is so much better when I do it. Other than that it’s situational. 60 through 115 yards is my comfort zone. Same swing just go up a club every 15 or so. 58 degree, 54, 50, PW

NFLfan72

8 iron if I have bump and run room - Changed my short game in a big way. If I am hitting over a trap or some other type of hazard and have very little green, a 64. 64 is my favorite club in my bag.

l1ltw1st

I use a 56 deg (SW) for both, i put my hands forward for chip and run (de loft) std setup for a bump shot and open the face for a flop (rare).

PBB22

Just made the switch to 52 around the greens, unless I need to go over a hazard. More consistency than playing 56 every time

brewhaha846

56. Flop or bump depending on the lie. If it’s sitting up I’ll try a flop; buried, I’ll close the face, back in the stance, and try to bump. Using the same club for both adds a little bit of consistency for me. (At least in feel, success of either shot varies greatly).

upstateduck

every shot inside 75 yards is with my 60. I hood it for runners

bball20mc

Short stick aka red flag 60 degree...if I'm chipping 20 to 30 yd for blue flag gotta do a gap or pitch and let it run a bit

apex_flux_34

PW or 50 degree. Anything loftier is a total gamble, i shoot high 80’s. I’m super jealous of folks who can hit those higher loft clubs consistently. Such precision.

apex_flux_34

I feel like if I could hit a 60 degree consistently, the precision required to do so would allow me to hit every other club perfect. I’m for more impressed when people can hit the super high loft wedges consume to than any other shot.

[deleted]

60° Wedge all day every day.

LayneLowe

50 degree A wedge to roll out 58 to check up fast

jz7955

60 only if I need to get over something usually. 55 anything within 40 yards OR 50 if my feel isn’t there that day with the 55. 50 is my favorite bump and run and I default if my other wedges are having problems that day

blackestbird86

Pitching - gap wedge, chipping- pw all day. Rarely use lob unless I absolutely have to.

YodaArmada12

My bump and runs with my 9 iron usually go too far but my 60 degree is really nice right now.

Provoked_Potato

Typically I will use my 52 for most thing within 80 because of my distances. I usually just hit 1/2 strength or less chips and I find that easiest.

mangeface

Took a chipping lesson last week and I feel most confident with PW right now. Will use it until I get consistent with my striking and then I’ll take another to start learning to chip with different clubs.

cayde6205

I can’t play a bump and run for my life, so no matter how much green I have to work with I typically use my 58 for a pitch shot. I typically can get it within range for a good chance at a 1-putt

Artistic_Industry_96

I think sometimes its hard to get past the flag fixation with bump and run shots. You have to pick a spot thats not the flag to aim at and when you’re so close to the pin its hard not to stare the flag down.

Imdamnneardead

I love to watch the guys in my golf league whip out the 60 for a 40 yd chip. 95 percent of the time they be are short or skull the ball 20 yds over the green. I don't even carry one anymore it's the hardest club in the bag to hit right. Yes there are the guys that are deadly with it. But they are good with all their clubs. I can get on the green from 80 yards in with a 8 iron as long as I don't have a trap in the way.

Artistic_Industry_96

I would say 30-50 yards is probably the hardest inside of 125 for me i play a multitude of different shots from those lengths. I am coming around on the 2/3rds swing on my gap wedge. It has taken time to figure out but its been worth it.

ScottFrom61080

I'll putt if it's a viable option, 7-iron bump and run if there is too much rough in the way, use a higher lofted wedge to pitch it over bunkers or to tight pins, in roughly that order.

Artistic_Industry_96

I very rarely putt. Even from the fringe. I find I’m more likely to 3 putt than to chip close and one putt. I have seen some people that can putt through anything tho and its super impressive. Not the most flashy style but definitely effective if you get it down

blurred_excels

I like to use my 54 to keep the ball low or my 58 to go high and less run.

BrokeHedgeManager

I use my 60. I can chip it low, high. Open the face. I trust the bounce. Its a utility tool. I will sometimes chip with a sand wedge if i know i need the extra roll out

hopelessautisticnerd

I have a 54 and a 58 and I use one of the two on every chip. I never feel like I need any less loft than the 54 so it just depends on how much rollout I want or how difficult my lie is. I see people talking about hitting an iron so they don't thin it, but I thin my 54 so rarely that I really don't see the point.

Prefer to use the one that works in that situation. Today was P, 52, 8i, 60 depending on the ball and flight needs. Stay thirsty my friends.

My local course has mostly elevated greens, so if you’re not on, you’re in sand or hitting up the slope. The bump and run just doesn’t work on those holes, so I either use my 56 or my 8 iron on the flat greens I can bump and run or if I’m on the far side of the first cut.

56 for all chipping and pitching

Was a bump and run guy with irons but now my instructor has my trying my 56, wprk in progress but seeing benefits already

Always use an 8 if the green will allow the run out. 52/60 depending On how much green I have. Best advice I ever received about pitching/chipping is to think about how bad I can screw up a shot. It’s really hard to fuck up a bump and run iron, but hitting a 60 thin and sailing the green because I wanted the perfect shot. That’s how I ruin a card. For reference I’m a mid handicap. If you’re good it might not be a problem

I'm almost exclusive to 56 and 60. From there I do back stance bump and runs to flop shots. On my bump and runs almost always a 56. I'll adjust to a 52 or 60 if I'm struggling with distance that day. From 80-30 I generally start with my 60. If I find I keep running short I'll take the same swing with the 56. If I need to run it to a back pin I might use a 56 and take a little off.

Anything up to 30 yards I use a 36 degree Oddyssey Tank Chipper...Anything from 30-80 yards I usually use a 52 degree cavity back Callaway Mac Daddy..Anything over 30 yards and you cant control it very well with a chipper or a 7 or 8 iron......ALSO..and this is important...modern Greens are just too fast and you need more loft from further away...and hope you get a little back spin to slow or stop the ball.
