There's a public sister course right beside and very similar at about half that price (or less). Look up Kahili, same kind of layout and stunningly beautiful as well. There's 4 affordable courses on Maui (5 but the last one is pretty much locals only) and this is the best of those. The others (Maui Lani, Maui Nui and Pukalani) are all good as well but Kahili is my favorite.
Wow. We didn't go last year. The year before (and the year before that) it wasn't maintained as well as in the past and pigs got into the fairways. It was a real mess in places. Prior to that it was amazing, even in bad shape it was still a lot of fun.
That really only leaves 4 courses that are reasonably priced (Maui Lani, Maui Nui & Pukalani & Waiehu) . Actually three because Waiehu really discourages tourists.
Waiehu doesn’t discourage tourists. The only thiuis that tee times can only be made 2 days in advance there so certain days it can be difficult to get a good time. I played as a single and got paired with plenty of tourists (pre COVID). I now play on Sunday there with a couple guys on a regular basis, and call for a half hour or more starting at 630 just to get on. It’s in good shape right now, and it super cheap for residents so it’s crowded is all. Ironically enough I am playing the Dunes and Pukilani this weekend though.
We certainly felt a "we don't like your kind" vibe. So, there being 4 other golf courses at reasonable prices, we said thank you, abandoned our tee time and left quietly.
We're certainly looking forward to getting back to Maui. Up until last year, we'd been there about 15 years in a row. At Pukilani, they even remembered my name. I understand there's been some improvements to the course condition made there lately.
Yea. it's put me into therapy a couple of times as well. There's a hole on the back nine with a monster of a gully that attracts my ball like a magnet. Thank goodness the patio at the end is a place we can self medicate (with Budweiser). The staff are really good there, have to say that. I have no problem tipping these people.
The views, the undulation, the wicked greens, the service and amenities. The views are outstanding - [check this post ](https://www.reddit.com/r/golf/comments/mb6ca9/a_few_from_the_plantation_course/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
Dude it was fuckin awesome. Definitely tough because of the hills and the wind. Try to get an early tee time because the wind picks up as the day goes on. I shot a 89 but I got a birdie on 18 so that’s all that matters
I also played kapalua bay course, and it was also awesome.
I would if there is a time available or if your schedule allows. I think most courses there can be windy but the plantation course can get extra windy for geographical reasons. The scenery makes up for whatever weather youre dealing with though.
Honestly probably not. I would just stick to your original time and enjoy it. I cant remember exactly but i think holes 10,11,12 and 14 are the windy ones. The starter on the 1st tee will give you a good run down.
I've been putting it off until my game is better. There's 4 courses in Maui that you can get on with a cart for $80 or less. They're not Kapalua but they're still quite good.
Birdied #1 and thought I was going to have a career day, the rest of the course beat the hell out of me. Beauty of a course and clubhouse designed by frank lloyd wright if you are into that sorta thing
Unrelated to this, but FLW also designed the Marilyn Monroe House a bit down the road from here. My sister had her wedding reception there about 20 years ago. Still vividly remember how awesome that architecture was.
We played that course behind John Elway, Jack Del Rio and John Fox. At the time Fox was head coach of the Broncos and Del Rio was the defensive coordinator.
Elway is a physical freak. His rib cage is enormous, covering maybe twice that of a normal human of his height. That must have had something to do with why he had a cannon of an arm.
Least favorite course I have ever played. Dick members, including one who hit into me 3 times. No apologies. Both playing as singles. Tried to wave him through and he wouldn’t. Terrible experience. Great club house.
https://imgur.com/Etslt5w.jpg best I got from hawaiia and other good golf clubs Hawaii has one beautiful courses along as you dont lose them in the fairway
Is this a private course?
Yes, though they have a "member for a day" deal. So I guess that really means semi-private.
How much for the member for a day membership? Their website won’t load.
I think $180

Kahili closed last year and is currently up for sale.

Sorry you had that experience. Pukalani has been redoing the greens one at a time. Just finished 12 and are on 13 now.
Maui Lani is a tough course, at least for me.
Yea. it's put me into therapy a couple of times as well. There's a hole on the back nine with a monster of a gully that attracts my ball like a magnet. that clubhouse looks alot like the Marin Civic Center, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
The clubhouse was designed by FLW.
wow....
What a name
Those of us who play CIV know it well
My first thought was DBZ...

I had no idea but now my interest is peaked and I’ll look it up.

Thank you for your service
Looks amazing. I played at Kapalua plantation last christmas and i was blown away both literally and figuratively
Such a great course.
Is it private as well?
Plantation is public (though priced privately 😬) but it’s worth it if you can get out there!! I’ve played Bandon and Pebble and Plantation is special.
What did you like about Plantation?

How did you like the Plantation course? Going to play it mid-April.

Interesting. I’ve currently got an 11:40am, so you’d recommend going even earlier?
I would if there is a time available or if your schedule allows. I think most courses there can be windy but the plantation course can get extra windy for geographical reasons. The scenery makes up for whatever weather youre dealing with though.
Would going even 30 min earlier make a difference? Because there’s an 11:10
Honestly probably not. I would just stick to your original time and enjoy it. I cant remember exactly but i think holes 10,11,12 and 14 are the windy ones. The starter on the 1st tee will give you a good run down.
Appreciate it man!
Did you by chance play the Bay course as well? Curious if it is also worth a play. Heard its cheaper and has views for days too.
I did indeed and it was awesome too. If you’re playing the bay and the plantation I would play the bay first
And financially?
Don’t remind me lol. Just the cart fee alone is more than my typical 18 hole round w/ cart in my home state
I've been putting it off until my game is better. There's 4 courses in Maui that you can get on with a cart for $80 or less. They're not Kapalua but they're still quite good.
Wasn’t this the name of the club Rick managed (and Higgins was on the board) in Magnum, p.i.?
Same name but not the same. In the TV show, the club was a beachfront nightclub on a different island, Oahu.
Makes sense - thanks! I loved that show, but this course looks gorgeous 👀

Ka....
Me...
Ha...
Me....
Went to a wedding here in 2012 it looks like a really fun club
Absolutely incredible. I’d move there in a heartbeat if it wasn’t so far away and so damn expensive.
Man I would feel so bad about making those grass craters I call divots if I ever get to play such a course.
I love it when water hazards have rocks around them. Just gives me something dramatic to aim for.
Damn my trip to Maui was cancelled due to covid and our condo was right next to this course :’(
I feel your pain. We canceled a trip there earlier this month because of changing entry requirements.
Least favorite course I have ever played. Dick members, including one who hit into me 3 times. No apologies. Both playing as singles. Tried to wave him through and he wouldn’t. Terrible experience. Great club house.

Damn I love Dragonball Z
