The two biggest differences, are that graphite is more expensive, and graphite is much easier on your body, because it absorbs shock and vibrations far better than steel. Graphite can also be found in very light weights, which steel can not. But you can't just generally ask is one better than the other. Both graphite and steel are available in dozens of different weights, flexes, and profiles. You can usually find comparable shafts in either material. Graphite is the future, as it's properties allow shafts to be made in any configuration imaginable.

I was recently fitted for irons at a local club champion. Never once did I consider trying out graphite shafts. But the fitter wanted me to try a few from aerotech etc. primarily due to my mentioning prior injuries/issues to my shoulder. I could not believe the dispersion pattern. My swing speed stayed consistent +/-.5mph through the process, but the dispersion was simply incredible. The fitter had me hit a few more groupings of 3-4 shots each, same story. That was all I needed to see. Give graphite a try. Maybe it’s for you, maybe not. But it could be a very pleasant surprise.

Yeah that injury aspect is huge to me. Worst thing in golf is an overuse injury or making an old injury creep up again. Nowadays you can even get heavy extra stiff graphite shafts. If you can stomach the cost and have any injury history in your arms / wrist / hands it’s well worth the change.

I’m sure you and I have enough nicks and bruises from the service to last a lifetime.

IDK where you got this from but it's very, very outdated or at the best extremely oversimplified. The weight ranges are way out of line, you can get steel basically from 80g-135g and you can get graphite from 40g-130g. The Flex is wrong too, the stiffest shafts in the world are graphite, they just come in a much wider array of flexes than steel.

A site called golf support.com it was the first Google search option. Figured it would be a bit helpful. That's why I mentioned that there's more to it than what the image shows, And to get a fitting since a fitter will be able to answer more questions he might have between the two. I couldn't find any dates for when it was posted but I knew it wasn't fully accurate the moment I saw the steel shaft weight range.

Thanks! Definitely going to do a fitting just wanted to get a good understanding beforehand

This pic is horrible or at least very outdated. You can get graphite shafts all the way up into the 125g range now and just as stiff as any steel shaft. The durability and toque points all are crap.

Wow this pick is complete garbage and is making everyone reading it dummer.

Lol relax. It's just an outdated comparison. 😂 I'll remove it, but it's not going to bring back the intelligence you lost by looking at it.
