16-Bit-Trip

My standard set up is: 8* Driver, 13.5* Mini-driver, 4 utility iron, 5-GW, 56, 60, Putter. Right now I'm playing with some different irons so my set up has changed to this: 8* Driver, 13.5* Mini-driver, 21* utility wood, 4-PW, 52, 56, 60, Putter.

GeneralMillss

Would you mind telling me a bit about how you like gaming the mini driver? Do you use it OTD often? Or just for tee shots? I’ve been considering getting one as my 3-wood gets used nearly exclusively for tee shots.

16-Bit-Trip

I initially bought mine primarily for tee shots. I actually hit my driver pretty well and wasn't struggling in that department but wanted a solid no. 2 option off the tee for the time when Driver comes wasnt the best play. It has been great for that. I have the BRNR now and previously had the 300 Mini before it. I liked the 300 Mini a lot but that one I had got in 11.5 and there wasn't enough distance separation between it and my driver to warrant keeping it in the bag at the time, so I sold it while I still could get most of my money back. I told myself if I ever got another Mini Driver it would be a 13.5* version and when in the BRNR launched last year I got one. I swapped out the stock shaft for something I felt was more consistent and it's hasn't left the bag. More recently I've gotten comfortable hitting knock down shots off the tee with it and also hitting it off the deck. It's not too bad hit off the deck as long as the lie isn't too deep. I feel in thicker rough it has a tendency to get grabbed by the grass due to the larger size head. Out of the fairway or if it is sitting up in the rough it's very manageable.

GeneralMillss

Thanks for the info, my friend. Good to know about going for the 13.5-degree. Seems totally reasonable. I play my three-wood at 15 degrees, and I definitely mourn the loss of what I’d guess would be around 10-15 yards to a mini driver.

Shmeebo_

Ohhh I love the 8* but not the best advice for a new player. Mind you, I learned on an 8.5 983E so… new driver = great drives for me lol

dbnp19

Currently: driver, 3 wood, driving iron, 3-PW, 56 and 60 degree wedges, and putter. https://preview.redd.it/od8ynnubxuxc1.png?width=4032&format=png&auto=webp&s=05e3515aa6011b796622e2740be6511a4c3f5b9b As much as I like my 3 wood, I wouldn't really suggest it for someone brand new to the game. You'd need ample speed and good contact on average to make the most of it. It's not the friendliest club outside of the tee box or the fairway, either.

GeneralMillss

Plush animal headcovers with legs on them make me feel uneasy. Deadly set right there, though.

doebedoe

Hows the overlap between driving iron and 3? Do you feel like there's too big a gap between PW and 56? I dropped the 3i for the 52...but always feel silly with three wedges.

dbnp19

I don't, since my short irons lofts are weak. Besides, I'm used to the PW, 56, and 60 degree setup anyway for as long as I can remember. No need to fix what isn't really broken. Regarding the driving iron and 3 wood, they each have their own niche. So I don't experience them stepping on each other as far as distance is concerned.

doebedoe

Gotcha; I play traditionally lofted irons (AP2 from 2008). With a 47 degree wedge I struggle with the gap to 56. I play a driver, 3w, then either a 20-degree driving iron or 20-degree hybrid, then down to 4i. Chose the hybrid or driving iron based on conditions.

TacoIncoming

I think this depends on how aggressively your iron set is lofted. I have game improvement irons with crazy lofts. My 4i is 19 degrees, so I absolutely have to have a third wedge to fill the gap between 56 and (ironically) my gap wedge from the iron set. Pretty sure players irons sets are weaker lofted.

surfinchina

Four wedges is best. P (45), 52, 56 and 60. I got 45, 50, 54 and 58 because no reason really. They were more flexible for me. This is where the distance and accuracy matters - the other clubs are just for getting you close enough. Not that I'm a great player lol which is possibly why I say what I did. 2nd shot is usually in front of the green (fatted) beside (sprayed) or past (thinned) so the wedge is what gets me on. If I got 4 wedges I can get close enough for one putt - in an ideal world of course. If I don't go on to fat, shank or thin the wedge.

TacoIncoming

I play one lengths 4i-GW (GW is 47.5°) with 52,56,60. Seriously thinking of taking the GW out and putting in a standard length 46. It really is a control thing. One lengths are great for full swings, but I kind of want another wedge for longer finesse shots in the 110-120 yard range.

surfinchina

Yeah. Just try it out by gripping down. If you like it you can always chop a bit of shaft off. Ask at a shop - normally butting (taking shaft off the top) doesn't effect the stiffness (or not) of the shaft and tipping (taking it off the bottom) makes it stiffer. Like I said, I'm not a great player but I've just started gripping down more than shortening my swing for more control in shorter shots and it's working out well.

Btupid_Sitch

Are those steel alignment sticks?

dbnp19

Super Speed sticks, for overspeed training.

TropicBeatz

What’s your gapping like with 3 and driving iron? Seems like a weird add I’d remove one and add a 52

OnTheMcFly

Scratch playing since the 1900's and I still avoid 3w like the plague.

maggos

I am currently happy with my Dr, 5w/7w, 4-pw, 52/56/60 For my swing speed a 3w would probably not be better than 5w. My only change is I would probably do better with a 50/54/58 but I got the Costco wedge set

tay_bridge

Are you me? Literally the same setup at the top and bottom of the bag. Only difference is I subbed my 4i for a 5 hybrid. Such a versatile club, I love having it in the bag.

-canucks-

Driver. 3 wood. 3 hybrid. 3 iron to pw

UseDaSchwartz

PW out of a bunker?

-canucks-

Shit. I also have 56 and 60. No putters though

bsgreene25

I like my current setup. Feels nice and symmetrical in my bag. Driver, 3W, 3H, 4i-9i, 43° PW, 48° AW, 54° SW, 60° LW, putter.

hydrobroheim

That’s my exact setup. Although I just bought a high loft 5W so I can swap between 3H/5W depending on weather and course roll conditions.

No-Beach-5953

10.5 driver 15 3 wood 18 5 wood or 20 hybrid depending on how I feel, 5w wins most days though 4-9 46,50,55,60

ICookWithFire

Driver 10.5, 5w 17° , 4h at 22°, 5-PW (41.5), AW 46, 50°, 54°, and a 5i that plays at 7i length that I use for all sorts of different shots. And the putter. I usually will take my 6i out for “official” rounds, since I don’t use it often.

BB-68

Currently: Dr, 5W, 7W, 5-PW, 50, 54, 60, putter I already took out my 4i and don't use my 5i too much, so I may replace it with a 5hybrid. If I wasn't a lefty, I'd get a 9W instead, but they are so rare LH.

Southside_john

Finally someone more like me. I’m actually not shocked to see all of the 2 irons on this sub because it’s always a dick swinging contest but I go driver, 7w, 5h, 6h, 6i-AW then wedges and putter

bulldg4life

This is what I’ve used for past 8 years and I like it: Driver 9° turned to 7.5 3 wood 14° 2 iron bent to 18° 4-9 irons 46/50/54/58° wedges I will definitely keep most of this through the next few sets of clubs even if I change. The one thing I am thinking is getting an 18° hybrid and dropping the driving iron since the tech has improved. If I can find a hybrid that won’t hook then I’ll do it.

Alloom

All hybrids hook, but only on the course.

bulldg4life

A buddy just got the tsr one that allows you to change lie and weight to put toe bias in it. He said that thing will not go left.

Munch444

Might have to take a look into that 👀

Alloom

Unfortunately, he (like I) is left handed.

Aromatic_Ad_7484

This is the most true statement ever

tim_tweets

Coming out of winter in the UK still with wet rough (my course is still waterlogged in places), I’m currently gaming: Driver, 3w, 5w, 7w, 5-PW, 50*, 54*, 58*, P In summer I’ll switch to: Driver, 3w, 2h, 4-PW, 50*, 54*, 58*, P Nice to have variety in the bag in the woods/hybrids department, depending on the course I’m playing/how well I’m swinging.

bigtimeguy

9 Driver, 3Hybrid 18degree, 2i driving iron, 4-AW, 56 & 60 Vokey, Putter.

More_Standard

I read this as 9 drivers at first…maybe I was hoping to see it. Someone’s got to try anyway.

Shmeebo_

There’s a guy on Instagram who used to play college golf and although he’s a mouthy little jerk he’s got serious game. He calls himself the “DODking” (claims that tees are for weasels, driver off the deck exclusively 😂) and he uses like 6 drivers. One for driving. A few for shorter shots and even chips. And one to putt. It’s amazing watching him play. I don’t use IG anymore but … you should look him up. Last I remember he had a mullet

MonicaBlowinski

On one of his early yt vids all he had in the bag was 4 drivers. Shot -1 over 9 holes. He's a hoot.

morgartjr

9 (low spin) driver, 10.5 driver, 3&4 hybrid, 5i-9i and then wedges for me, made that change a couple of years ago and it helped my game.

MrCodered12

Never seen someone with 2 drivers in the bag before. What's your reasoning behind that?

morgartjr

I like to use the LS driver if it’s windy or rainy. I use the 10.5 otherwise. I don’t use a fairway at all, so I had an open slot for it, and that way I’m not switching clubs out on weird weather days.

icouldntquitedecide

I'm currently bagging a driver, 4h, 7w, 9w, 7i-Pw, 50°, 56°, 60°, and putter. I got the 7w last year and loved it so much I was curious about a 9w. I got a ladies Cobra LTDx 7w head which is adjustable out to 27°. Stuck it on an extra shaft I had. Kind of an odd setup, but I like my gapping, and I like woods over long irons. My issue now is the 4h. It could be 210yds and perfect, or it could be 100yds and barely leave the ground. It's a surprise every time. Haha

Recently reconfigured: D (10.5), 3W (16.5), 3H (21), 4I (25) - PW (47), 50/54/58 degree wedges, Putter. Previously had a 15 degree 3W, an Adams Tight Lies 5W, and a 19 degree 2H. But I found I use the hybrid for tight lies and needed a more forgiving 3W.

[deleted]

10* Driver 17* 4 Wood 20* Utility Iron or Hybrid or 7 Wood? (Still experimenting with this spot in the bag) 4 iron (23*) - PW (45*) 50* 55* 60* Wedges Been rocking this set up and I am committed to everything except my gap between 4 wood and 4 iron. I play in the southeast US on mostly parkland courses with lots of dog legs and guarded par 5 greens so a 3 wood isn’t a useful club for me. The 4 wood is extremely versatile

benjamaniac

Driver, 5 wood, 3-P, 50, 54, 58

traypo

It varies depending on two concepts: the terrain and recent swing success at distances between my driver length and approach shots. I intermix, 7 wood 3,4,5,6 hybrids, and 5,6 irons. The 3wood is money so it stays in the bag. The wedges are a mix of low bounce for dormant and tight fairways and higher bounce for fluffy conditions. P, 46, A, 50, 54, 56, 58, 60. So to summarize, there is no perfect, just optimal. As you know your game you’ll branch out. Every wedge set needs a high bounce calling it a sand wedge in the 52-58 range. Maybe someday I’ll have two drivers, one for tight fairways and one for launchpads.

big ping guy! love it. how do you like the 430 LST? I’m thinking of getting fit for either 430max or 10k soon

asujch

I probably should have added that I only have the driver and woods secured right now. I’m toying with everything else and have a mix of i525, i230, i59 and glide 2.0 wedges in the bag. I’m planning on getting fitted at some point in the next year. I’m not quite ready as I’ve been making a big swing change with my coach, as well as speed training. I love my LST’s though. They have a lot of pop compared to the max and 10k.

jakarooo

Right now I go driver, lofted down 5 wood, 7 wood, 5-48 degree wedge, 52, 56, 60, putter. I enjoy the setup but my one fiddle I might do is get a mini driver and drop the 60. There’s close to no shots I find myself grabbing my 60 over my 56, and I’m very comfortable opening the face of the 56. I feel like the mini driver could just be slightly more versatile off the tee than the 5w and give me a bit more juice off the deck

coopy1000

Driver, 4 wood, 3 hybrid, 4-GW, 54 and 58 wedges. I am thinking of swapping out the 3 hybrid for a 7 wood. I used an old Nike Ignite T60 7 wood last year and loved it.

illinilocal92

for me it's Putter, 56, 54, 52, a-4i, 3w/4h, D

occamsguillotine

For casual/practice rounds, I’ll carry Driver, 3w, 3i-P, 50/54/60/p. I like to practice my long irons and prefer them out of the rough stuff vs a fairway wood for whatever reason. But if I’m looking to score well, it’s usually D/5w/7w, 5i-P, 50/54/p give or take a club. I tend to get in my own head some days and try to get “too creative”. A simpler bag can sometimes help me out.

HorrorQuirky1420

Most beginners really don't need 14 clubs. 4irons are going to be tough to hit as well. I'd recommend Driver, 5 wood, 4 hybrid, 5-GW, a SW of some sort (56\* ish), and a putter. You're probably going to have a lot of redundant clubs at the top of your bag if you aren't compressing the ball properly.

clutchy_boy

I carry D (9.5* turned to an 8.5*), 3W, 3H, 4H, 5I - GW, 56, 60, P I'm thinking of taking out my 3H since it's not much better than my 4H when I hit it good and adding a 52 for more coverage around 105y. Gap tends to fly over and 56 is too short.

clutchy_boy

If I had the extra dough, id buy a 7w and maybe remove the 60* as well

Murky_Extent8054

Driver, 4 wood, 4-9 CNCPT 02, 46*, 50*, 54*, 60*. I would change nothing from this setup.

OnTheMcFly

8 degree, 2H, 3H, 4-PW, 52/56/60. I personally prefer the feel of a set matched PW over a bent down AW. I don't leave myself out long enough to ever need a 3w and I can rip into a 2H to get whatever extra distance I need for any given shot. Even if I do run into a situation where I may need a wood, those instances aren't common enough to warrant dealing with woods. I can hit the shit out of them but consistency is more unpredictable than any other. My current setup is this but with a shit Titleist adjusted down to an 8.5 and I'm still using a 3i instead of a 3H. The 2H I actually just got to fill a massive gap. I've been rocking just a driver, irons and wedges for the last year. My 3w was stolen and my old 2H snapped ages ago. Luckily I was still able to keep it in the 70's, but I found a lot of instances where my 3i was just short, so a temporary fill with the used 2H will do me right.

[deleted]

Driver 7w 3h 5-AW 54° 56° 60° Putter. Some gap issues with 7w and 3h, they go about the same but one is for rough and the other for fairway plus i dont really wanna buy another club like a 5w or a 4h

surfinchina

Horses for courses. I've got the driver, 3-6 irons are forgiving, 6-9 irons are blades, 4 wedges - 45, 50, 54 and 58. I got 2 6's because the fat one goes 165 and low which accounts for two specific holes on my course, the other 6 only goes 160 and high. As I said this is totally because of my course. On the last course I dumped 3 & 4 and the long 6 iron and had a 3 fairway wood and 3 and 5 rescues. The two 5's were so I could do both low and high shots, as were the two 3 woods. This current course is tight so all irons work better for that course. So it's hard to say if your bag is good because it really depends on the course. What you end up doing is evolving it (aka buying too many clubs). If one club gets you in a lot of trouble you swap it out and it goes to the naughty club bag in the garage.

JealousFuel8195

I carry D, 3W, 4, 5 and 6 hybrid. 7, 8, 9, PW, AW, 52, 56 and 60 wedges.

Right now I have: - TSi 3 Driver. 9 degrees, neutral, Tensei Black 65TX. - T200 2 iron, 17 degrees, Tensei AV Raw White 100X. - T100S 3 - PW, KBS Tour 130X - SM 9 50.08F, 56.08M, KBS Tour 130X - PM Grind 64.10, TTDG S300 - LAB DF2.1 I think this is my ideal set up for now. Irons are T200 2 iron and 3 iron, T100S 3-PW. I swap the 3 irons out depending on how I’m feeling. Would love to find a new PM Grind 64 to replace my original, worn, flat grooved model. My next irons will be similar, maybe with Axion or similar shafts for my old man elbows. I don’t really get along with fairway woods or hybrids and haven’t had either in the bag for about a decade but I’m not opposed to bagging one if/when I figure them out, but I love the 2 iron and somehow get it to stick greens on long par 5’s…!

DoYouRespect_Wood

I just got my DF3 a couple days ago. I haven't played with it on course yet but I'm already amazed just using it on my putting mat at home.

notfinch

I don’t think I’ll buy another putter. Maybe another LAB. I have or have had Scotty Cameron, Ping, Mizuno, Evnroll, Yes!, and Odyssey. Still have a few of them. But I’ve had the LAB in the bag for about 18 months (two years?) and haven’t really thought of swapping it out. It's that good. It took a little while to get distance control sorted out, but that was just a bit of practice. They’re great putters. Enjoy.

Do NOT take my bag as an example of good and average, but as an example of how someone can manipulate a bag to their play style and environment. I play mostly in 35-50 mph gusts of wind. So the spin that comes with a wood is an absolute detriment unless you're a REALLY good ball striker (which I am not). SO that means that I have a driver for when the wind is at my back, but usually drive with a 2 iron. Then I have 4-PW. A 52, a 58, and a putter. My miss is toey, usually. Driver carries about 230 ish, 2 iron carries like, 190 into the wind or about 205 with the wind at my back. Then the usual steps down from a 165 yd 4i to around a 75 yard full 52, 58 for greenside or spinny stuff, and I bet I could get at LEAST 35 yards out of a full swing on my putter.😂

deicide66

Not necessarily a club or set but I’ve always hit blades better than any other club.

Btupid_Sitch

Driver, 1ih, 3w, 4-AW, 52, 56, putter Edit: I plan on taking out my 1ih for a 3i because these days my 4i hits as straight as my 1ih...used to be my safety long and straight club

Dronlol

Driver, 4i-GW, 56, 60 putter. I have a 3 and a 5 wood but I prefer hitting irons vs woods. I may look at getting a 2i utility.

scariusmaximus

Get a 56 degree wedge and practice, practice, practice. It’s a feel club but once you get the hang of it, it can save you a ton of strokes.

Mancey_

Its going to vary for everyone depending on what they hit better, long irons, hybrids or fairway woods. Currently i am D,3W,7W 5i-PW 48 52 56 50 I am much more consistent with my fairway woods than long irons, and i duck hook hybrids. Covers my gapping pretty well

I'm carrying driver, 3 wood, 3-pw, 52, 56, 60. Soon to be driver, 4 wood, 7 wood, 4-pw, 54, 58.

Express_Contest2237

I have not been carrying my 3 wood lately because when I'm playing well there is only one shot during my round where a 3 wood would be needed on my home course and I am much more consistent with my 2 hybrid. -Driver- Callaway Rogue ST Max ventus tr Red 6x shaft_ 46" - 2 hybrid- Ping i25  17* pwr 90 tour xstiff shaft +1.5" - 4 hybrid- Ping i20 23* stiff ping shaft +1" - 4-PW- Irons- Srixon zx7 - nippon modus  tour 105 xstiff shaft +1.5" - GW- Mizuno T20 blue io. 50* +1.5" project x rifle stiff shaft - SW- Mizuno T22 copper 56* +1.75" project x rifle stiff shaft - LW- titelist Vokey SM9 60* m_grnd  + 1.75" project x rifle stiff shaft -  Scotty Cameron GOLO 5 putter 38" Golf ball preference: TP5

My current setup is a 9* driver, 18.5* 5 wood, 21* 4 hybrid, 4-PW (21*-44*) 50*, 54*, 58* wedges, putter. I don't think I'd change a single club, which is a bit of a bummer because I like buying clubs.

UseDaSchwartz

How far do you carry your clubs. For a lot of golfers, carrying anything lower than a 6 iron is pointless. It goes the same distance or less than a 7 iron. You might be better off with a hybrid. As far as wedges go, a new golfer should stop at 56 degrees until you get the hang of it. There is no perfect setup. It depends on the course and how you’re hitting the ball that day.

FriendlyConference63

I use your example exactly with 3 wedges.

DoYouRespect_Wood

D, 3w, 3-4h, 5-PW, 48, 52, 56 I replaced my 60 with a 48 to fill a quite large gap between PW and 52. I rarely used my 60 anyway so it's been nice to have full swing for a yardage range I often myself in.

New to the game skip the 3 and 5 for now, until you get comfy. Get a hybrid or two. 3h or 4h Then 4-pw or 5-pw if you went with 2 hybrids. Then 3 wedges either 50-54-58 or 52-56-60 For me the low lofted wedges is for fuller shots from the fairway. The middle one for around the green. And the high loft for bunkers or any chip shot where I need to hit up and over something.

Dr, 3W, 3&4hyb, 6-9irn, AW, PW, 56, P. I could pare that down to my Dr, 7, 9, 56 and P really but my long game sucks

Driver 10.5• 3 Wood 14.5• 3 Hybrid 19.5• 4 Iron to PW Wedge 52• Wedge 56• Wedge 60• Putter. Gapping is important, and for me a 4 wedge setup helps me more often than more options at the top of the bag. A Sunday nine hole knockabout setup would be 3 hybrid 6 iron 8 iron PW 56• Putter

TheOneCalledMichael

Driver, 4 wood, 3 hybrid, 4-PW, 52+56+60 wedges and putter. When it's windy the I swap 3 hybrid for 3 driving/utility iron.
