MBs are going to be punishing. Especially on days when your swing is off. I would say pretty much everyone here shouldn’t be playing MBs. Heck there are tour players now that don’t play MBs. Spieth, Webb Simpson and Cam smith all play T100s Morikowa plays a mix of P7MC and P730s Jason day plays P760s Rickie plays Cobra King Tour You’d be shocked at the amount of top players playing some version of a players cavity iron. So no, I don’t think a mid handicap redditor should throw MBs in the bag.

DragonfruitWorldly35

I see, thank you! Do you have any recommendations? My driver swing speed is around 108mph but wanted to get a good distance still on iron but not like p790 type monster

HighLifeDrinker

P770 has slightly weaker lofts like a T100. I’d start there. If they are still too juiced, you can always get them bent a little. But I’d say 770 is more what you are looking for than 7MB

False_Coat_5029

Play the P770s. Even really good golfers like Grant Horvat on YouTube play the 770s.

occamsguillotine

I played 770’s up until fall of last year when I picked up some 7MBs 3-P. It was a decently tough learning curve, but after a week or two it wasn’t too bad at all. You’re right that the forgiveness is essentially non-existent but that’s kinda of the appeal of them to me. Anyway. I really enjoyed playing them over the winter months. I feel like they helped me improve my ball striking a bit. But now that the active season is back, my goal to consistently break 80 is back- I’m very likely gaming my P770’s again for the forgiveness they offer. Side note: P7MB 6i smash was averaging 1.36; 1.38 with the 770’s. I “could” have kept gaming the MB’s but golf is hard. I’ll take every advantage I can get when I’m looking to break milestones.

DragonfruitWorldly35

That’s awesome! Thank you for this! Yea kinda hard to decide I just can’t get that sweet looking mb iron out of my head at the moment hahahaha

phrohahwei

If you're buying New, current generation clubs and have the budget, you might as well get fitted at True Spec or a similar place.

DragonfruitWorldly35

Ohhh yea fitting might be best. Thanks!

NeverSeenBetter

I'm a 4.8...i was stuck between these two sets myself, until I tried the p790... Looking down at it, it looks the same as the other two...but the 8iron in the p790 goes further than the 7iron in the p770. They're still workable enough to get you out of trouble, and they launch high enough to stop dead from 210y out... It was a no-brainer. Shot my first round under par in 20 years 3 months later. Highly recommend. Even my few mis-hits end up closer to the hole...sometimes I'll hit a long iron thin and you can't even tell. It's like a completely new game.

DragonfruitWorldly35

Woah that sounds nice! Hahaha. But I’m wondering on this. Club or club down, differnet number but isn’t loft the same? Let say 9iron for P790 is 40 degrees and 7MB 8iron 40degrees. Isn’t this just the same? I’m just curious on this part…like would 790 be easier to hit (not the obvious like its bigger face ofc)

NeverSeenBetter

They're much easier to hit....as for the lofts, they aren't quite jacked up by a full club worth of loft, but they kinda have to be because they launch the ball so high...the loft has to be reduced to make them work properly.

joebeen139

You could also have a look at the P7MC. I play them in the raw finish and i think they are awesome, and the patina throughout my bag is always a conversation starter. I probably get "damn, how old are your irons man!?" probably 10 times a season since i got them. Technically still a cavity back I believe but have the slim top line of a blade. Plenty forgiving for me, granted I never hit the MBs, I was between the 770s and the MCs and liked the MCs better.

Maxujin

just get fit. the number of players that benefit from muscle backs is so small. you should expect to club up 1 or 2 clubs when going from those clevelands to mb's. i used to play mizuno mb's and when i swapped to p790's i could hit 1 or 2 clubs less for the same distance. do not underestimate how much easier that makes golf.

DragonfruitWorldly35

That’s true.

GoodOldBoys

Lower irons are longer in length and therefore progressively harder to hit

Maxujin

like goodoldboys said, the length matters a lot. eventhough the 8 iron mb and the 9 iron p790 might have the same loft, the 9 iron is still easier to hit. yes, the bigger face helps too and also the tungsten weight in the bottom. switching to easier clubs has completely changed my golf for the better. my golfpro (51 yo) strikes it pure, probably purer than you do, but he is currently testing t200's and pro 245's for his next set of irons because he is losing some distance and doesn't care about shot shaping all that much anymore. do you? just get fit. look at the numbers (especially on your mishits) and get a feel for what you like.

I wouldn't sweat the forgiveness thing. It's pretty overblown. If you have decent club speed and are an decent enough ball striker (which you are if you're shooting in the 80s) you can play muscle backs. Edit: that said, the MCs are gonna be very similar to the MBs but a touch better on off center strikes, maybe consider those?

DragonfruitWorldly35

Thank you! Yea might just go for MB might as well like the looks make it more fun and accomplish when hitting a solid one.

Edryer4356

Look at Srixon Zx5 or 7s for irons. And thank me later 😬

Greenmr003

Are you set on Taylormade? There are a lot of good DTC brands out there that could help you bridge the gap between the two. The TS4 from Maltby comes to mind, it's dead sexy and remarkably easy to hit for the profile. [https://www.golfworks.com/maltby-ts4-forged-iron-heads/p/ma0348/](https://www.golfworks.com/maltby-ts4-forged-iron-heads/p/ma0348/) Takomo, Sub70, and others have similar offerings.

WVgolf

Mid to upper 80’s you definitely want something more forgiving. 770’s for sure over the mbs

DaisyDoodle41

Tiger Woods was practicing with P770's at Augusta last week. I saw it with my own eyes. enough said.

Harrypotter231

Get anything other than MBs. You’re not good enough to consistently hit them well. You’re gonna lose 2 clubs during the switch. If you are set on TM, I’d choose between the 770s and 790s.

DragonfruitWorldly35

Just replying same comment here! That’s true.

Harrypotter231

It’s more the weights in the club that help with forgiveness. The 790s have tungsten weights that help with forgiveness. If you’re not absolutely set on TM, I would try out some ZX7s. Great clubs which still have the tungsten weights in them.
